CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

I would just like to reflect on two excellent events marking our 30th anniversary which have taken place in the last few weeks.

Firstly the Broadway Cinema hosted a joint celebration with the cinema club and ourselves. I would like to thank the staff and all involved for a very pleasant evening.

The second event was the grand party at the Broadway Hotel, which was a sell out with around 170 attendees and was a fantastic night. Again thanks to everyone involved including the management and staff at the hotel, the band - Full Circle who played three great sets and the team from the LALG committee who set the whole thing up.

So moving forward, we have the AGM to come on November 7th, which I flagged up last month, when full details were included in the newsletter. However, since then it has become apparent that we will have two or three vacancies on the committee and will also have a need to reinforce our sub committees and other teams. So, we have included an advertisement relating to this elsewhere in this newsletter which I hope you will take the time to read and that we will get some positive responses.

LALG ANNUAL SURVEY 2017 – RESULTS

The committee would like to thank the 163 people who responded to this year’s survey. A fantastic 97% said that events are well organised, membership is good value for money and they would recommend LALG to a friend.

While 93% felt that LALG’s activities met their needs, there were 66 ideas for future outings, 6 ideas for speakers and over 20 ideas for new or duplicate groups. The committee is now looking for volunteers to help make some of these happen.

12% of respondents said they felt more could be done to make them feel welcome; the committee is looking at how to improve this.

Over a third of respondents use the LALG website but around a quarter would use it more if it was clearer and more comprehensive than the newsletter. This feedback will be useful when the committee next looks at ways to improve the website.

There were ten suggestions for more local businesses that could give discounts to LALG members. More volunteers will be needed to help with contacting those businesses.

The committee was especially grateful to the 17 respondents who offered to help with walks, social events, trips, publicity, the newsletter, new groups, the website and admin roles; and will contact them soon. There is still a need for lots more volunteers – see below.

Fuller details of the survey results are at www.lalg.org.uk

NEWSLETTER CONTRIBUTIONS

This is LALG’s 30th anniversary. Over the years there have been more Groups, more meetings, and more people such as Associated Groups providing material to go into the Newsletter. However we have limited space to include everything.

Can you please help by keeping the size of your entries down. Include the important information about future events, but not long descriptions which are perhaps unnecessary, or reports of past events. Consider putting additional material on the website and just including a link.

Thank you. Tony Maynard-Smith

CLOCK GROUP

We meet on Wednesday evenings to learn how to service and repair clocks under our tutor Richard Edwards with the assistance of Bernard Bailey. Richard is an experienced horologist and teacher who also teaches at the Epping Forest Horology Centre.

This is a practical group who actually get down to the serious business of working on the clocks and our members have successfully restored many fine timepieces. For beginners I include in certain sessions short presentations on the theory and practice of looking after mechanical clocks. We meet in MRS HOWARD HALL on Wednesdays from 7.00pm to 9.30pm. This is in central Letchworth with free parking in the evenings. Meetings coincide with Autumn and Spring school terms.

Meetings for the 2017/2018 autumn and spring terms are filling up fast with both beginners and more experienced “horologists” but I am always interested in new members. If any members know of someone who would like to learn watchmaking, please let me know.

Our October meeting featured a selection of wines from Majestic Wines Stevenage. With 25 people present to make the decision, we automatically got off to a great start to the evening. A further seven stylish wines followed, all with an average price of £10.00. FOOD AND COOKERY GROUP

Talk it, learn it, eat it. Share knowledge, opinions, likes and dislikes about food. Be surprised by blind tastings, share recipes, discover kitchen tricks. Whether you’re a chef, a cook or think you’re a total novice, you are welcome to join this friendly bunch – we have a couple of spaces.

Our next get together will be on Wednesday 22 November at 7.30pm. This month it’s blind tastings for Christmas. See if you think the premium quality product really is much better at often twice or three times the price of the value one, when you can’t see the label. Are you sure your guests would know? Be prepared to have your taste-buds and your assumptions challenged. This is a repeat of last year’s November meeting by popular request of members because we were amazed by the results.

We meet in Members’ houses: we chat a lot, we talk food a lot and try not to eat too much but it’s always a fun evening.

ASSOCIATED GROUPS

The LALG Committee has previously agreed that the entries from Associated Groups should not exceed 1/6 of a page. Contributors were informed of this decision at the time but over time this rule has been neglected by some contributors. At the last committee meeting on the 5th October it was agreed that we should reiterate this decision. We hope that contributors will adhere to this guideline because otherwise it might be necessary for the newsletter editor of the time to exercise their own discretion in relation to entries.

EDITORIAL TEAM

Production of the Newsletter is central to running LALG. Please consider whether you can help. This could be as one of the team of editors, or in a more organisational role.

The Editors normally work on two issues a year using Microsoft Publisher to compile the newsletter. It is a great way to develop your computer skills as well as gaining a great insight into the running of LALG and getting to know the many contributors that make such a success of LALG.

To find out more please contact:

Tony Maynard-Smith [email protected]

The LALG welcomes contributions from its Members.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Hundreds of members have renewed their subs by automatic bank transfer, to LALG account 75 32 89 68 sort code 30-65-22 (Lloyds Bank). Nearly everyone remembered to include their membership number in the payee reference, important as, with nearly 1700 members, quite a few share the same surname.

This is the time of year when LALG members sometimes forget whether they’ve renewed or not and contact us to find out. One way to check is to look at your membership card, the colour of which changes at the end of August each year. This year’s card is LIME GREEN and is inscribed ‘Expires: 31/08/2018’. If you have it, you have renewed.

And if you have received this NOVEMBER newsletter through the post, or the link to the online version by email, you have certainly renewed, otherwise we wouldn’t have sent it to you. But it’s never too late. Re-join now and you’ll be in time to receive the December newsletter and continue enjoying access to the very many activities which LALG offers.
