From the Chief Executive Officer

February is a busy month at WHRO! Along with engaging television and radio programming, we have several opportunities for you to join us in the community. Whether you enjoy music, public affairs, or community outreach, we have something for everyone. I hope you share my excitement about these upcoming events.

To celebrate Black History Month, we will be airing several fascinating programs. Highlights include Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, a powerful documentary about the incomparable poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist, on February 21 at 8:00 p.m, and The Talk: Race in America, airing on February 20 at 9:00 p.m., which explores how black and Latino families counsel their kids to stay safe if they are stopped by the police.

The next day, you’re invited to join us and weigh in on this topic of “the talk” – a conversation in which parents prepare their children for police encounters – at our next Race: Let’s Talk About It town hall on February 21, at Fort Monroe Authority. Barbara Hamm Lee, host of Another View, will moderate our town hall discussion. Learn more about her and our Race: Let’s Talk About It initiative on the next page.

Be sure to tune in for the tenth annual live broadcast of The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 18 at 2:00 p.m. on WHRO TV15, or stream the event at facebook.com/WHROeducation This is always an exciting event in which middle school students from across the area compete for the regional title. WHRO will also be holding a book drive from February 5 through February 18 to collect books for our First

Books initiative. This program distributes books to local children in challenging circumstances who may not have access to books otherwise. You may drop off donations at our office in Norfolk or Williamsburg.

Lastly, throughout the month of February, music fans will want to hear the local bands that are performing as part of the Out of the Box concert series that continues every Thursday night at the Sandler Center. Admission is free and Paul Shugrue will be broadcasting Out of the Box live from the concert.

I hope you will come out and participate in these events. We love meeting the faithful supporters of WHRO. We look forward to seeing you!

President & Chief Executive Officer

RACE: Let’s Talk About ItFostering Understanding Through Community Conversations

WHRO TV15 is excited to premiere The Talk: Race in America on February 20 at 9:00 p.m. The two-hour PBS documentary examines interactions between minorities and police and discusses “the talk,” a conversation between black or Latino parents and their children about how to behave if stopped by the police. The next day, WHRO invites community members to a town hall to discuss topics covered in the program.

Fostering dialogue and understanding around race relations has been a priority at WHRO for the last several years. One staff member who has passionately led these efforts is Barbara Hamm Lee, executive producer and host of Another View. When she began her television career in 1978, Lee quickly realized that decisions about news coverage were made at the management level – a place that featured little diversity at the time. She set out to change that, and soon became a news director. “It became very important to me to be able to help shape a newscast that was inclusive of the community that we served,” Lee explained.

Later, while serving at WHRO, she was excited to find that the station’s CEO shared her vision. Realizing the station didn’t have any programs that addressed the African American community, he asked her to create a show, and Another View was born in 2009. After two years as a television program, it transitioned to a weekly radio show but kept its mission of exploring issues from an African American perspective.

After several years of fostering conversations with radio listeners, Lee and the show’s producer, Lisa Godley, decided the community needed something more. It was 2014, and the number of African Americans involved in lethal confrontations with police was rising. “We felt from our travels in the community that people needed to talk,” Lee explained, “so we developed Race: Let’s Talk About It.” In partnership with Fort Monroe Authority and Virginia Wesleyan College, WHRO has held five town halls on race-related topics, with the sixth scheduled for February 21. Find details and register at whro.org/talkaboutrace

When other public media stations began requesting assistance to conduct their own town halls, Lee and Godley developed an online tool kit featuring resources to help others facilitate these types of conversations. “It’s not just black/white,” Lee said. “It depends on where you live. It could be Hispanic, it could be Muslim – whatever population that is a minority population.” Lee hopes churches and civic groups, as well as individuals, will use the resources to hold similar conversations. Download the tool kit at whro.org/talkaboutrace

She also has a passion to see WHRO continue to be a leader in the area of race relations. “We want to continue to be a gathering place for thoughtful people who want to come together and really make a difference,” Lee said.

We hope all of WHRO’s members and supporters will share in welcoming Chaz and his expansive knowledge of classical music to the weekend programming of 90.3.” Listen for Chaz Stuart weekend mornings on WHRO 90.3 FM and online at whro.org

Backstory with the American History GuysLate last year the producers of Backstory let stations know that they would no longer produce a weekly broadcast program, and were instead moving toward a digital podcast in January 2017. While we were disappointed to hear the news, we understood the move and are pleased that they will continue to produce occasional broadcast specials as well as short-form content that can be dropped into the schedule from time to time. The podcast can be heard on their website and via iTunes at backstoryradio.org

Art of Song – Moving on Up! Art of the Song has moved from Fridays to Sunday evenings at 11:00 p.m. The program known as the virtual coffee house features music and discussion with today’s singer songwriters. Hosts John Dillon & Vivian Nesbitt are heard on over 150 public and community stations and take pride in inspiring creativity in their listening audiences. Art of the Song is supported by The Standing “O” Project.

An Old Friend ReturnsWhile we continue our national search for a Mid-Day Classics host, an old friend has offered to help us out! This month, Anthony McSpadden will host and program Mid-Day Classics, weekdays from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., from the great state of Texas. As you may recall Anthony left in June of 2016 to return to his home state and head up KMFA Classically Austin. While he has been missed by staff and listeners, he has settled in quite well and is enjoying family and new friends. Luckily today’s technology makes it possible to produce and host a radio program from a studio 1,314 miles away. We hope you enjoy his return and the notion that good friends are never far from our hearts.

The Veterans Project veterans.whro.org

You Were So HandsomeWHRO is now in the second year of spearheading the state wide search to locate a photo for every one of the 1,307 Virginian names listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial: The Wall in Washington, D.C. The search has made incredible progress and this past year, friends, family, and people who care about this cause have taken on the mission and found over 250 photos, such as Private First Class Lorenzo Raynard Johnson shown below. But we still have work to do. Though there are now less than 300 names still missing photos, we all have a responsibility to thank these brave soldiers for their service and honor their memory. You can help. We encourage you to go to whro.org/walloffaces Help us all remember, and help us find a face for every name.

Uncle Buster, I was 5 when you passed, but your smile and handsome face, your kindness are burned in my mind and heart. The one thing that always stood out about you was your love of family. The last time I saw you before deployment, you were polishing your shoes. You were always

polishing your shoes. You were always so clean, well groomed and dressed so nice.

You were so handsome. Mom was pregnant when you died, and just like she promised, she named that baby after you. You told her you were not coming back and you had seen it in a vision, that you made peace with it. She seemed to know exactly when it happened. I miss you so much. The family misses you too. You had such a promising future. Although you did not have children of your own, we, your nieces and nephews hold you in our hearts and carry on your legacy.

Love,De Ann and family

Community Engagementamgrad.whro.org

Helping youth graduate opens the doors for a successful career and a world of opportunities, such as an income double that of a dropout and a longer life span.

Preventing youth from dropping out also has another remarkable outcome: youth who stay in school are less likely to use drugs. However, there is evidence that the challenges of high school can be a precursor to youth dropping out, which can result in a vicious cycle. Per the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids (PDFK), “dropouts are at increased risk of substance abuse, which is particularly troubling given that they are also at greater risk of poverty, not having health insurance, and other health problems.”

A 2015 report by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services states rates of nonmedical abuse of pain relievers (prescription drugs) “are nearly three times as high for adolescents between the ages of 18-25 then they are

for adults.” The same report alerts us to more shocking statistics. Almost 16% of all high school youth report using a prescription drug not prescribed to them and the number increases to over 20% in 12th grade. This is frightening, and the consequences can be devastating. The Virginia Department of Health reports four hundred youth between the ages of 15 and 24 died from opioid overdoses in Virginia between 2010 and 2014.

In an article for PDFK, Dr. Neil I. Bernstein discusses the many reasons teenagers use drugs and alcohol, such as influence from popular media, escape, boredom, and misinformation. PDFK also outlines strategies to help educate children. With their children as young as two years old, parents can review the differences between a vitamin and medicine. It is important to know that when correctly executed, prevention programs are successful in reducing the use of addictive substances. Research has also shown that

academic performance improves when youth stop substance abuse.

Recently this disease hit home personally. A friend’s daughter, who experimented with drugs throughout high school, lost her struggles with addiction two days before Christmas. We all must do what we can to help youth stay healthy, in school, and graduate.
