International Literacy Day- 2015

Background:
September 8 was proclaimed International
Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17,
1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is
to highlight the importance of literacy to
individuals, communities and societies. On
International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO
reminds the international community of the
status of literacy and adult learning globally.
Celebrations take place around the world.
Every year the day is observed with a specific
theme to create awareness about literacy and
raising it to an optimum level. The theme of
International Literacy Day 2015 is Literacy and
Sustainable Societies. Literacy is a key driver
for sustainable development.
Literacy skills are the prerequisite for the
learning of a broader set of knowledge, skills,
attitudes and values, required for creating
sustainable societies. At the same time,
progress in areas of sustainable development,
such as health and agriculture, serves as an
enabling factor in the promotion of literacy and
literate environments.
What Did ICDP-SJ?
Integrated Child Development Program-Shishueder Jonno observed the day with different programs. Schedule
is in below-

Detail activities-
1. Rally and Discussion :
Upazila Level- Upazila Administration
organized a rally and discussion meeting in
Gangni and Mujibnagar Upazila. Shishuder
Jonno Program had an assistance. The Rally
and Discussion Meeting was headed by Upazila
Nirbahi Officer (UNO). In the rally and
discussion meeting students, teachers of
different educational institutions, reporters,
local people, and employee of Shishuder
Jonno, SCI & PSKS were participated.
A rally with poster, banner and different
slogans visited the main roads of Upazila town
in both upazilas. Following the rally a
discussion on Literacy was held.
Union level:
Union Parishad Organized Rally and Discussion
meeting and assist by Shishuder Jonno program.
Students, teachers, local people and employee of
SJ, PSKS program were participated in rally and
discussion meeting. In 9 Unions of Gangni and 4
unions of Mujibnagar were arranged the program
leading by Union chairman.
2. Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)
This is a special intervention on the literacy day
which was committed by GoB and Shishuder Jonno
Program. Throughout the working area of ICDP-SJ
of PSKS besides local government arranged reading
session for 15 minutes. This will symbolize that we
should be committed to read first of all chores of
daily life.
3. Reading book competition
Shishuder Jonno Program arranged reading
competition in community level. The project has
Literacy and Numeracy Boost intervention. G-1 and
G-2 students are the participant of the
intervention. The perspective or methodology of
the intervention is to children will develop their
literacy and numeracy knowledge besides formal
education. On the literacy day SJ arranged reading
competition in 163 camps with the children of
about 3634. In the competition a judge panel from
community was formatted. Community Core Group
(CCG) members lead the program. They evaluated
1st, 2nd and 3rd categories from the participants and
they were awarded.
