Let your face shine upon your servant;
and teach me your laws.
Señor, mira benignamente a tus siervos y enseñanos a cumplir tus mandamientos.
Today we hear Jesus tell a “great crowd” that “…anyone of
you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disci-
ple.” A few of Jesus’ immediate disciples, such as Peter, John and
James, did just that: They responded to Jesus’ call, renouncing ev-
erything to follow him. How do we respond when confronted with
this command of Jesus? Surely the renunciation of possessions need
not mean literally giving all one’s possessions away, does it?

Question of the Week
23rd Sunday —Luke 14:25-33
Key Passage: Jesus addressed them: “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters and even their own life, they cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disci-ple”.
Question for adults: What is the real mes-sage behind the words that Jesus uses?
Question for children: How can you make Jesus first in your life?
Pregunta de la Semana
23° Domingo —Lucas 14:25-33

Come to the Diocesan Youth Rally on Sept. 25th!
This year’s Youth Rally theme is “Thunderous Mercy.” As we reflect on this simple, yet powerful message, Joe Melendrez will lead us in ways to overcome fears and doubts that keep us from being the BOLD and HEROIC disciple we are called to be! Joe is a Catholic hip hop artist from Southern California who says, “I rap what is real to me and God is very real to me. It is my way of connecting with God and expressing an energetic message of faith, hope, and love for God’s children.”
So come celebrate with Joe and other high school aged youth from all over the Diocese what it means to have “Thunderous Mercy”! There will be Mass, Reconciliation, a keynote and concert by Joe, and in-teractive Corporal Works of Mercy. Cathedral of St. Joseph, Jefferson City, Sunday, Sept. 25th – 12pm registration, $10

We lift up to the Lord in
prayer all those who seek heal-
ing through the peace of Christ,
especially Marge Swearengen,
Cecilia Savage, Thomas Drago-
vich and Homer Poor.
We pray too, for those who
struggle with grief or addictions
and those who labor to provide
our well being and freedom especially first responders and military, and for
those separated from their loved ones and family. For each of them, may the
promise and the gift of the peace of Christ fill their hearts and minds, and may
almighty God always provide their every need.

Do our possessions keep us from en-
countering Christ at Mass? Do our pos-
sessions interfere with our relationships?
From the Deacon’s desk...
(CRUX) Mother Teresa. The very utterance of these two words is sheer magic to millions of people the world over; to some others, it is even a mira-cle. Take for example, Shiv Kumar. Apart from being all skin and bones, the only movement that this young man was capable of was on ‘all fours.’ For months, the sisters nursed him with tender loving care and kept pray-ing to Mother Teresa. A miracle took place….Shiv Kumar was able to walk straight again, not merely walk but could even run. Yes, Mother Teresa touches the hearts and lives of millions . As Sep-tember 4th 2016, the day of Mother Teresa’s canonization, approaches, the world awaits a new chapter of one of history’s greatest icons. ‘Sainthood’ was conferred on Mother Teresa even when she was alive. That “sainthood” did not need the rigors of a process which is mandatory in the Catholic Church. It was a spontaneous, uncondition-al and loving response of a people whose lives were profoundly touched - the poor and marginalized; the dy-ing destitute; the unloved and rejected; the poorest of the poor. Most of the world had no time or space for these “least of our sisters and brothers,” but Mother Teresa opened her heart and
doors to them. She made them feel wanted, accepted and loved. She cared for them, restored them back to a life of dignity and meaning. For them she was their saint, and this sentiment is voiced and re-echoed by countless all over the world. So, on September 4th, we celebrate not
merely the fact of having known her and touched her, but the fact that a saint was with us and will continue to be with us. As the big day dawns, many of us will obviously relive warm memories of having known her, spoken to her, been with her, touched her…or al-most, anyway. My first meeting with Mother Teresa goes back to 1972 when, on a visit to Calcutta, I was taken by some Jesuits to visit ‘Nirmal Hirday’, “Home of the Pure Heart”, a hospice for the sick and dying foun-ded by Mother Teresa.

Who is my neighbor?
Mother Teresa helped the poor to walk, figuratively and literally By Editor, Catholic News, August 30, 2016
(Mother Teresa continued) A couple of days later, while visiting a Calcutta Basti teeming with Bangladeshi refu-gees, I could see that the only ones that mattered to these poor migrants (literally in an unknown and unwant-ed land) were the Missionaries of Charity, and in the midst of them was Mother talking to them, listening and with eyes full of compassion and love, just telling them that she accepts them: scenes that will remain always etched in my memory. In 1984, the day after Indira Gan-dhi was assassinated, Mother was called very specially to Delhi by Rajiv Gandhi to bring healing to a city and a nation that stood torn apart by hatred and revenge. It was Mother’s impas-sioned plea: her call to all men and women of goodwill that ultimately silenced the cries of hate and venge-ance. It was she who led a rally for peace; it was she who was able to go out in the midst of victims and in a great measure touch their hearts. Over the years, the remarkable quality of this woman is her ability to be one with the poorest of the poor and to be able to open the doors and the coffers of the mightiest and the richest of the world. It was not with-out reason that she was often accused of taking money from the “corrupt,” but to this, her oft reply was “if any money is used for the poor, it is for good.” There was also the accusation that ‘she spoiled the poor.’ For that she always had a plain-speaking defense: “Why should only the rich be spoiled all the time?” The media are today full of stories of this “Saint of the Gutters,” but that’s not what is important. What is important is that she walked this earth in our very own times. She was able to touch simple, ordinary people in profound ways and transform them into the image and likeness of God.
