Mistletoe ...Mistletoe has been an element of Christmas decoration for much longer than Christmas trees, which fi rst came into living rooms in the 18th century. Mistletoe is particularly important in English-speaking countries. Tradition has it that if two people kiss under the mistletoe, they will be a happy couple. According to age-old tradition, a young woman cannot refuse a kiss when under the mistletoe. If a woman is not kissed under the mistletoe, tradition has it that she should expect to stay single for another year.

Munich’s Christkindl marketsCounting down to Christmas: Advent is a busy time in Munich – particularly at the numerous Christmas markets. The locals have created the endearing term “Christkindlmärkte” (“baby Jesus markets”) because in Germany baby Jesus brings the presents on Christmas Eve. There are over 130 individual markets and they all make their own decision as to whether to call themselves Christmas markets or Christkindl markets.

New year, good luck ...It is well known in Germany that pigs bring good luck at new year. People give each other pink marzipan pigs – often together with a chimney sweep on top and a lucky penny or four-leafed clover in its mouth. The bristly animal has long been considered a symbol of wealth and riches thanks to its fertility and strength. The statistical average birth rate for sows is 2.3 times per year and the average number of rosy children is 23 per year. “Having a pig” thus entered the German language as a saying for “being lucky”.

Last but not least ...Anyone wishing to pay Santa Claus a personal visit can do so in Lapland. There, in Rovaniemi, is where he offi cially lives. The town is indeed the “offi cial hometown of Santa Claus” The EU offi cially gave Rovaniemi this title in 2010. Tourists can visit Santa Claus and his reindeer all year long.
