What is a BMP?
BMP stands for Best Management Practices.
In layman terms, it means covering your stockpile, it’spicking up your rubbish, installing a bio-sock at acatch basin, installing a silt fence, etc…. It alsoincludes educating people so they do not causeincludes educating people so they do not causepollution into our drainage systems, streams, andoceans.
Bottom line……….
DO THE RIGHT THING
TO TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Analyzing Projects(Think about what BMPs you need to be in compliance)
Feb 2015 7
Project 1: Residential home built on a slope(hillside)
Feb 2015 8
Disturbed slope / loose exposed soil
Loose constructiondebris
Feb 2015 9
Issues noticed here at this site
Unsecured Port-a-Potty
No oil pan or liner
Project 1: Continue
Feb 2015 10
Storm Drain Catch Basin
Options for Project 1
Added a barrier BMP
Feb 2015 11
Continue Scenario 1
Feb 2015 12
Added a second BMP (layered)
Q: What else can be done to make project more compliant?
Other optionsCovered slopes
Feb 2015 13Covered stockpile
Secured port-a-potty
Project 2 – Small subdivision built on a slope
Catch basin located down stream from project
Feb 2015 14
-Sediment build up andBMP not maintained
-Roadway un-swept
Continue Project 2: After a rain event
What’s happening here?
Ponding
Feb 2015 15
Mud
Ponding + Mud = Safety Hazard + Polluted Discharge = Critical Deficiency
Continue Project 2 – Major or Minor Discrepancies
•UnsecuredPort-a-potty
•Unprotecteddisturbed soil
•Loose debris
Feb 2015 16
Continue Scenario 2 – Critical Discrepancies
Unprotected stockpiles
Unprotected slopes
Feb 2015 17
Continue: Project 2 – Marginal Discrepancies
Exposed materialsWorn down BMPs
Feb 2015 18
Vehicle Management
Solutions for Project 2
Roadway swept (wheretracking starts and ended)
Feb 2015 19
Cleaned in front of catch basinand installed a new BMP
Options for Project 2
Feb 2015 20
• Installed a doubleBMP at front of project
• Swept roadway
Project 2: Good Housekeeping Practices
Feb 2015 21
• Area cleaned• Port-a-potty relocated• Ground covered
Project 2: Stabilized Ground and Slope Stability
Feb 2015 22
• Slope covered
• Ground covered
Project 2: Other Good Practices Onsite
Feb 2015 23
• Covered Stockpile
• Plastic Liner andground cover
• Secured Port-a-potty
Scenarios at Project Siteswith Common
Issues
(Here are some Better Options)
Feb 2015 24
Concrete Wash Out Issues
Feb 2015 25
• Overflow spills caused by- overfilling- missing containment- splattering out- leaking chute
• Washing down hand mixer anddumping wash water on the ground
• Washing tools• Emptying extender hoses or pipes
from pumper trucks
DO NOT LET CONCRETE WASH GO TO GROUND
Good Options for Concrete Wash Outs• Use a liner underbins to catch/containspills
• Cover bin in case of anunforeseen rain event
(or remove from site)• Remember to clean upany drops or spills onthe ground

Continue: Good (front), Bad (back)
Feb 2015 27
Stockpiling Issues• No barrier type(sediment control)BMP to contain material
• No covering, materialwashing away
Feb 2015 28
• Bad location- not staged on the property; located in public-right- of-way
- placed too close to storm drain/storm drain system
Good Stockpiling Options
Materials on property
Feb 2015 29
Cover with dust screen
Options for Stockpiles
Cover with Tarp
Double barrier BMP
Feb 2015 30
Cover with Tarp
Useful Tips
• when possible, place stockpiles in vegetated area on property
• if stockpile is placed on a slope, should put a barrier BMP at thetoe or low side of the stockpile
Good Silt Fence Installation
31
Options for Slope Protection1) Plastic covering for erosion
control.
2) Silt fence trenched in at toe ofslope for sediment control
Feb 2015 32
1) Burlap cover (matting) forerosion control .
2) Silt fence trenched in at toe ofslope for sediment control
Issues with Excavated, Disturbed orUn-stabilized Landscaped areas
Feb 2015 33
Continue: Issues with Excavated, Disturbedor Un-stabilized Landscaped areas
No BMP installed tocontain material onthe property.
Feb 2015 34
Gutter buddy atcatch basin isthe ONLY BMP
being used
Issues when BMPs not adjusted
• No j-hook at the end ofthe sock, discharge todrainage system
• No proper overlap
Feb 2015 35
Sediment in publicright-of-way
causing a safetyhazard
Other Issues
Wrong type(s) of BMP
Feb 2015 36
Good Options for Disturbed Areas
Mulch tubeused as abarrier forsedimentcontrol
Silt Screenused as abarrier forsedimentcontrol
Feb 2015 37
J-hook atends
Good Egress Options
Feb 2015 38
Portable Toilets
Feb 2015 39
• Unsecured• Located near a water
body
Equipment Parking
Feb 2015 40
Equipment Parking
Feb 2015 41
Project 3: Near a State Water Body
What’s needed at minimum?• Double sediment barrier

SUMMARY1) PLAN OUT YOUR BMPS - THINK ABOUT THE TYPE(S)
OF BMPS TO USE FOR YOUR TASK* RECOMMENDATION: TAKE A PICTURE AND TALK TO
A SUPPLIER TO HELP YOU PICK THE BEST BMPFOR YOUR TASK AND SCENARIO.
(* BE CREATIVE AND USE WHAT YOU HAVE ONSITE)
2) REMEMBER KEEPING YOUR SITE CLEAN (AND SAFE)IS AN ON GOING PROCESS; IT IS NOT JUST A “ONE
Feb 2015 52
IS AN ON GOING PROCESS; IT IS NOT JUST A “ONETIME DEAL”. NEED TO DO REGULAR INSPECTIONSAND ADJUSTMENTS (AND IN SOME CASESDOCUMENT) REMEMBER, BMPS NEED REGULARMONITORING, ASSESSMENT, MAINTENANCE, &UPDATING.
3) REMEMBER THAT YOU’RE PART OF THE BIGGERPICTURE. What you do can effect everyone……..soDO THE RIGHT THING. Thank you.
