LessonLesson ReviewVocabularyFill in the blanks with the terms that best complete the following sentences. 1 A is a major regional or

global community of organisms.2 A is an animal

that kills and eats a prey animal.3 A may live for years while

a parasite feeds on it.

Key Concepts4 Apply In which two biomes are organisms able

to get water most easily? Explain.

5 Compare Name one way in which tundra and desert biomes are similar. Name one way in which they are different.

6 Contrast What is the difference between a terrestrial ecosystem and a biome?

Critical ThinkingUse this drawing of a grass–prairie dog–badger food chain to answer the following questions.

7 Describe Use the terms predator, prey, producer, and consumer to describe the feeding relationships between these organisms.

8 Apply Name two abiotic factors and describe how they relate to this food chain.

9 Apply Name one way that flowering plants could compete with one another in a grassland.

10 Assess Loggers are planning to cut down trees in a small forest near your community. What are two ways in which their actions could affect this terrestrial ecosystem?

Lesson Review Answers 1. biome

2. predator

3. host

4. Organisms in temperate rain forests and tropical rain forests are able to get water most easily, because these biomes have the highest rainfall.

5. Sample answer: Both tundra and desert biomes have very dry climates. Tundra biomes are very cold, while desert biomes can be very hot.

6. A terrestrial ecosystem is made up of land organisms and their nonliving environment. A biome is a major regional or global community of organisms. A biome can contain more than one ecosystem.

7. Sample answer: The badger is a predator and the prairie dog is prey. The grass is a producer, the prairie dog is a primary consumer, and the badger is a secondary consumer.

8. Sample answer: Water and sunlight are two abiotic factors that the grass requires to undergo photosynthesis.

9. Sample answer: Flowering plants could compete for space in order to grow and reproduce.

10. Sample answer: Plants that were previously shaded by trees would have more access to sunlight, which could allow them to grow better. Animals that nest in the trees would lose their homes and leave the area or die off.
