Introduction Building Uncle Tom’s Cabin with Google Sketch 90 minutes SOL: o 11.4 (c) Apply concepts and use vocabulary in informational and technical materials to complete a task. o 11.10 (e) Analy ze information from a text to draw conclusions. (j) Use technology to access information, organize ideas, and develop writing. Cognitive Objectives Students will research and analyze typical slave quarters on large plantations during the mid- to late 1800s. Students will analyze Chapter 5 of Uncle Tom’s Cabin to see how it compares and contrasts to typical slave quarters of the time. Students will apply technological skills and the researched information to construct a replica of the cabin featured in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Students will synthesize compare and contrast results in a written essay. Materials YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAA3VhQ9LRE  HowStuffWorks article “Slavery at Monticello” (From “How Monticello Works”) Uncle Tom’s Cabin (specifically Chapter 5) Computer with access to Google SketchUp/Building Maker Computers with Internet access to academic research Teaching and Learning Sequence Anticipatory Set The teacher will ask students to draw on prior knowledge and write down as many facts as they can remember about ty pical slave quarters (look for answers such as: small, many people per house, not lavishly furnished, dirt floor, one room, etc.). The teacher will then direct students to illustrate this on their own sheet of paper. These guiding questions should be displayed to stimulate students to think of the details: - Ar e the homes quar te rs o r cabins? - Ar e t he y clos e t og et he r? - Ar e gardens nea rby? - Where would they eat? - What woul d th ey u se to cook a nd s er ve f ood?  Lesson Development 1. The teac her will d irect s tudent s to the You Tube vide o: “UAB S tudent s Excavate Slave Quarters.” Students will note similarities and differences to their response and what the UAB students find. 2. The teach er will the n distri bute the art icle “Sl avery at Mo nticel lo” for stu dents to read and analyze. The teacher will lead a brief oral discussion in response to the article.
