Math Roll-A-Spider - Create a
spider out of felt (head,
body, eyes, legs). Assign
each body part a num-
ber or two. Child rolls a
die and adds the body
part that correlates with
the number.
Spider patterns - Make
patterns using plastic
spider rings. Print out the
spider patterns as a
guide.
Roll and add - Print out
the spider web and
number die. Child rolls
the die and adds the
right number of spiders
to the web.
Spider play dough
counting - Practice
counting to 8 using
spider play dough. 8
legs and 8 eyes. Work
on counting and talk
about how many more
are needed to make 8.
Spider counting book -
Print out the spider
counting book. Read to
the child. Use
fingerprints to make the
correct number of
spiders.
Spiders
LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science Spider hunt - Go for a
walk around your
neighborhood. Look for
spiders and spider
webs. If possible, take
pictures of your findings.
(TF)
Research spider facts -
Look up information
that the children want
to know about spiders.
Add what you learn into
a science journal.
Spider slime - Use this
creepy crawly slime as
a base for plastic spider
toys or spider rings.
Design your own web -
Draw what your spider
web would look like if
you were a spider. This
can be on paper or in a
science journal.
Web strength
experiment - Use
materials at home to
make your own spider
web (for example -
yarn, ribbons, tape,
etc.). How many spider
rings/toys can your web
hold?
Literacy Spider letter making -
Use toy spiders or spider
rings to make the letter S.
Can you make the letters
in your name, too? What
other letters can you make
with the spiders?
Shared writing about
spiders - Work together to
write what you already
know about spiders. Write
down any questions you
have about spiders, too.
Sequence Itsy Bitsy
Spider - Say the rhyme
together, adding in the
finger motions. Talk about
the order of events. Print
out the Itsy Bitsy Spider
cards. Have child se-
quence them.
Spider web letters - Use
white yarn (a “spider
web”) to paint letters.
Drag the yarn through the
paint and try to paint let-
ters.
Itsy Bitsy Spider poem -
Print out two copies of the
poem. Choose one sen-
tence to focus on. Cut
both copies of that sen-
tence apart into words.
Child can match the
words, as well as se-
quence the words (with
assistance). Talk about
how the letters look.
Other Paper plate weaving -
Cut out the middle part
of a paper plate,
leaving the ribbed
edge still in a circle.
Hole punch around the
edge. String white yarn
into a web via the hole
punches. Add a spider
ring or two and display.
Handprint spiders - Paint
child’s palm and 4 fin-
gers black. Press onto a
white piece of paper.
Add more paint if
needed and press so
that the fingers are in
the opposite direction.
When the paint is dried,
child can add googly
eyes.
Spider play dough -
Make black play dough
and add materials to
encourage children to
create their own play
dough spiders. (TF)
Spider headband - Use
construction paper and
googly eyes to make a
spider headband. (TF)
Spider babies - Use
tongs to pick up the
babies (spider rings)
and place them on the
mama spider printable.
(TF)
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

Spiders
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their
own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by
subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Spider number cards - Print out
and laminate the spider
number cards. Kids can count,
or put them in order. Add
plastic spiders or spider rings.
Children can place the cor-
rect amount by the numbers.
Spider numbers - Use toy
spiders to form different
numbers.
Literacy
Spider puppets - Turn the hand
print spiders you made into
stick puppets (by gluing or
taping them to craft sticks).
Make up silly spider stories with
the puppets.
Itsy Bitsy Spider sticky wall - Kids
can retell the poem using
foam pieces or laminated
story cards.
Science
Spider exploration - Place non-
fiction spider books, real
photos of spiders, and real
photos of spider webs into a
basket. Let kids make
observations and ask
questions. Encourage them to
draw their observations in a
science journal.
Sensory
Spider sensory bin - Put black
beans and plastic spiders into
a bin. Add scoops, cups, and
spoons. (TF)
Spider sensory bag - Add
hair gel and plastic spiders to
a Ziploc baggie. Seal well. (TF)
Block Play
Itsy Bitsy Spider - Build a water
spout with blocks and towers.
Use plastic spiders to act out
the poem.
Small world building - Add
white yarn, plastic spiders, and
insects to the block area.
Children can build and let
their imagination go wild with
this invitation.
Arts and Crafts
Paint spiders - Free paint
spiders on an easel or a
vertical surface. (TF)
Shape spiders - Set out black
construction paper shapes,
along with google eyes. Let
children freely create their
own spiders using the shapes.

Spider Roll and Add
Print out the number die pattern. Cut it out and assemble it using glue or tape. Print out the spider web; considering laminating it for durability. For the game pieces, use spider rings or other spider toys. You can also use the printable spiders included here. Again, consider laminating them for durability.
