What you need: nothing

What you do: This game is played just like follow the leader. Have the children line up behind an adult leader. The leader will lead them around the classroom in a variety of different movements (walking, skipping, jumping, etc). Choose a child to be the new leader and continue playing.

What you say: Today in our story we learned about Gideon, the man God chose to lead the Israelites against the Midianite army. Gideon was afraid, but God helped him be brave and the Israelites won the battle. Raise your hand if you had a chance to be the leader in our game today. Gideon was a brave leader because God was with him.

What you need: large playing area

What you do: This game is a backwards version of hide and seek. Help the children count slowly to twenty together with eyes closed while one child hides. Once they are finished counting, the children may begin to look. As each player finds "It," they squeeze into the hiding place until the spot is crowded with children. When the last person finds the hiding place, that child gets to start a new game by hiding first.

What you say: Today in our story we learned about Gideon, the man God chose to lead the Israelites against the Midianite army. Gideon was afraid and even hid from the Midianites, just like we hid in our game. But with God’s help he was brave and the Israelites won the battle. When can you be brave?

What you need: large blanket or sheet

What you do: Lay a large blanket or sheet on the floor and have the children sit around the outside edge of it. Choose one child to step away from the group and hide his eyes. Quietly choose another child to hide under the blanket. The child that was away from the group with his eyes closed comes back. The child has to guess who is under the blanket by looking around to see who is missing. Give them three chances to guess before revealing the hidden child. Continue playing until every-one has a turn.

What you say: Today in our story we learned about Gideon, the man God chose to lead the Israelites against the Midianite army. Gideon was afraid and even hid from the Midianites, just like we hid in our game. But with God’s help he was brave and the Israelites won the battle. When can you be brave?

Judges 6-7

A long time ago there was a group of people

called the Midianites, and they picked on God’s people, the

Israelites. The Midianites were mean. They were big. And they had a

big army. The Midianites stole things from the Israelites. They even

stole their food! One day, an Israelite named Gideon was hiding wheat

so the Midianites wouldn’t take it, when one of God’s angels came to give

him a special message. “Mighty warrior, the Lord is with you!”

Gideon looked around to see whom the angel was talking to. Then the

angel said, “Gideon, you are strong. Go and fight the Midianites

. The

Lord will be with you, and you will win the battle!” Gideon couldn’t

believe the angel called him a mighty warrior!

God told Gideon to lead an army against the gigantic Midianite army.

Gideon gathered thousands of men into his army, but God told

Gideon he had too many. So Gideon sent many of the men home.

Then God said he still had too many. So Gideon sent more men

home. When he finished, there were only 300 men left. Gideon

knew he was fighting a big, strong army, but he was brave

because he knew that God was with him.

When the day of the battle came, Gideon gave his army

horns and jars with torches inside. They circled the

Midianite camp and Gideon blew his horn. All of

his men blew their horns and broke their jars.

They stood with torches in their hands and

watched the mighty Midianite army

become afraid and run away.

Gideon’s army won! Gideon was

SUPER BRAVE because our

super God was

with him.

God chose Gideon to fight a big army.

God helped Gideon be super brave. Who will help you be super brave?
