To achieve this standard: 1.3.12.D: Identify, interpret, and analyze the authors skill in employing literary devices in various genres. (e.g., figurative language, imagery, allegory, and symbolism). Identify, explain, and analyze the effects of sound, form, and structure of poems. What is the specific learning objective(s) for each lesson? (included in lesson plans). The student will be able to: define poetic devices identify poetic devices in provided texts Create a Prezi to show understanding of poetic devices

What prerequisite skills/knowledge will students need to effectively access and participate in this lesson? Some background knowledge in poetry, which would have been provided in previous lessons. When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? Use Blooms taxonomy. All six will be used: Remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating; see below in how they will be assessed. What will be assessed and how? Develop your assessment first-backwards design. Their quiz at the beginning of class will help me gauge their understanding; their assignment at the end of the PowerPoint presentation i.e. the Mother to Son poem and their ability to find their own meaning in the poem and understand symbolism. Additionally, their ability to identify the poetic devices via their Prezi assignment and the group assignment in class. When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?) A day and a half. Where should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation (computer lab, classroom, science lab) AND what materials will be needed? How will technology be incorporated into the lesson? Journals, poetic device worksheets, poetry worksheets for group and Prezi assignment, PowerPoint presentation. Technology will be incorporated through the PowerPoint presentation and their Prezi assignment.

Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students? Its being taught in order to achieve the aforementioned standard (see above). How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons? This lesson relates to previous lessons of understanding tone in poems, as well as exercises in paraphrasing to understand meaning. Knowing these poetic devices will increase their comprehension of poetry. How have you made your class student-centered? This lesson will be student-centered because students will work in groups, engage in class discussion, work independently, and use technology to create their own Prezi. Moreover, all three types of learning will be utilized i.e. auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.

Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?) Their quiz will help me gauge their knowledge of poetic devices; how well they did on their assignment at the end of the PowerPoint presentation i.e. the Mother to Son poem and their ability to find their own meaning in the poem and understand symbolism. Additionally, their ability to identify the poetic devices via their Prezi assignment, class discussion, group assignment. Materials/Technology Journals, poetic device worksheets, poetry worksheets for group and Prezi assignment, PowerPoint presentation. Technology will be incorporated through the PowerPoint presentation and their Prezi assignment.

Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: They can be provided with guided notes for the lecture portion of the class; the fact that the PowerPoint presentation provides audio will also be helpful. Enrichment Techniques: Students can write their own poems, or a song, create a Prezi about it, and then present them to the class; the class could be engaged by identifying the poetic devices the students chose. Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson): Different types of learning will be engaged: auditory will be engaged via the direct instruction on definitions (the PowerPoint presentation); students will read together, independently, and engage listening skills when the teacher reads aloud; group work will help those that work well on teams. Lesson Presentation Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set As students enter the room, they will find a quiz on their desks (which will not be graded, but they dont know that). This will help me gauge how well they have been picking up on the definitions/meanings we have been going over for the past week. Detailed Teaching Sequence including teacher presentation, student practice, and assessment. After they have all completed the quiz, they will be told it is not graded, and to use it and correct it and take any notes while we go over the PowerPoint presentation. They will hand this corrected quiz/notes in after class to check for completion. It will be handed back and can be used as a study guide in the future.

At the end of the PowerPoint, students are asked to think about their own crystal staircase (Mother to Son poem), answering the questions in the PowerPoint presentation. This will be a quick activity and discussion (the teacher will ask those who are willing to volunteer their answers to do so; discussion will also help to clear up any questions about the poetic device definitions, etc.)

Next, the teacher will provide worksheets to identify poetic devices (students will be put in groups and will read aloud to one another). Three different poems will be provided: easy, medium, and hard in terms of figuring out the poetic devices.

Finally, the teacher will let the students choose which poem from the group practice session they would like to use for their Prezi assignment; teacher will explain Prezi assignments objective, walk them through how to use the technology, etc.

Closure: Ask students to turn in their practice worksheets and their quizzes. Teacher will use this information to determine if any corrective instruction is needed.
