Topic: Past Continuous Tense
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to
1. know the use of past continuous tense
2. know the form of past continuous tense, that is was/ were/ + -ing
3. ask and answer questions in past continuous tense orally

2. Introduce the use
of past continuous
tense. (7 mins)
Let Ss find the use of
past continuous tense
themselves instead of
being told by T.
T picks some sentences from the story and asks Ss look at the sentences and
ask them when they use past continuous tense.

form of past

To help Ss learn the form
of past continuous tense.
T asks Ss to observe the sentences. T asks Ss to deduce the form of past
continuous tense , that is was/were +ing

5. Introduce the rule
of forming –ing verb

Let Ss observe the rule
of forming -ing verb
T picks some verbs and asks what Ss observe. Ss are allowed to discuss with
their partners.
e.g. Many people were standing (stand) under the shelter.
All the vehicles on the road were moving (move) slowly.
People on the street were running (run) for shelter.

Consolidate what Ss
have learnt in a more
interesting way.
The class is divided into 2 groups. Each group takes turn to act in front of the
class without speaking. One group should ask “What were you doing
yesterday?” before the other group act the action. Then the other group
guesses what they were doing and answer in past continuous tense. Each
group is given 4 mins to think about what actions they will do before the
game starts.
8. Pair Work (13

Consolidate what Ss
have learnt in a more
interesting way.
Pair up Ss. Each pair has 2 similar pictures. They have to find out the
difference between the 2 pictures by asking each other questions using past
continuous tense.
