Procedure:

Set (lesson introduction with attention getting):

Keep the books hidden while conducting the beginning part of this step

The teacher will tell the students: “Today we will begin a journey back in time.

We’re going to find out about life in ancient times and speak with one of the

most famous people of all time. However, we can’t quite start our journey yet.

I invited a couple other people and their not here yet. I wonder where they

are…”

Look around the room. Then, pull out the books.

“Oh! Here they are! Jack and Annie will be going with us on a journey in a

Magic Tree House.”

Sequence of activity

The students will review the front cover of the book and orally discuss a prediction

about the story.

What do they think the story is about? What will happen?

The students will conduct a picture walk of the book to explore their prediction. The

students will adjust their predictions as appropriate.

How has your prediction changed now that you’ve completed a picture walk of

the entire book?

The students will record their prediction on a Magic Tree House Journal Page.

Students should utilize complete sentences when making their predictions

The teacher will model this process, if necessary

Prediction sentences should start with “I think…” or “I predict…”

Sentences should include details to support their prediction

More than one sentence may be needed to complete the process

The students will share their predictions with the group

Some of the predictions should include Jack and Annie going to the Olympics.

If not, introduce this as a prediction.

The teacher will discuss the Olympics to ensure students have some background

knowledge on the subject (As 9-year-olds, they may not have much exposure to the

Olympics)

Athletics contest between the best athletes from each country

Give examples of modern Olympic events: swimming, track and field,

basketball, cycling, hockey, skiing, curling, ice skating, etc.

The modern Summer and Winter Olympics take place every four years

Summer Olympics take place in Brazil in 2016

2012 Summer Olympics were in London

Athletes are awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals

Over 200 countries participate in the Olympics

Ancient Olympics were different. “We’ll discover some of the differences as

we read the book, including one very important one.”

Chapter One

Discuss focus for Chapter 1

The students will improve their comprehension skills by using their

imagination to create a picture in their mind as the text is read

The students should focus on text features (pictures, adjectives, etc.) to create

their picture

The teacher should pause at a couple points during the reading of Chapter 1 to

allow students to discuss the pictures they are creating in their minds.

Begin reading Chapter 1

Utilize the following strategies at random during reading:

Choral reading

Cloze reading

Partner reading

Teacher reads

After completing Chapter 1, the teacher will discuss the comprehension questions

below:

How are Jack and Annie able to the places in the books?

Why does Morgan say Jack is brave?

Where are Jack and Annie headed in this mission?

Individually, the students will answer the following question on a Magic Treehouse

Journal page.

How did Jack and Annie find their way to the tree house in the dark?

Students need to answer the question in complete sentences and should

start their answers with “According to the story or passage…”

The teacher and students will discuss their predictions made before Chapter 1.

Have any of the predictions been supported or disproved?

Chapter 2

Discuss focus of Chapter 2

The students will focus on adjectives during their reading and describe the

adjectives purpose in the story

Read Chapter 2

Utilize same reading strategies as chapter 1

After reading Chapter 2, the students will list 3 adjectives and their corresponding

nouns at the top of a Magic_Tree_House_Journal_Page.

The students will describe how each identified adjective affects the picture the

students are creating in their mind.

Individually, the students will answer the following question at the bottom of the

Magic_Tree_House_Journal_Page: What is strange about the woman acting in the

play?

Students need to answer the question in complete sentences and should start

their answers with “According to the story or passage…”

Continue existing reading rotations throughout the of the book

Discuss the following character questions as a group:

Who is Plato?

What does Plato love?

Why did Plato warn Jack and Annie not to tell anyone who the secret poet

was?

What does this say about Plato and his feelings about girls not being

allowed to go to school?

Individually, the students will answer the following question at the bottom of the

Magic_Tree_House_Journal_Page: Why do you think Plato says, “It’s odd to see a

girl walking so bravely through Olympia.”?

Students need to answer the question in complete sentences

Chapter 4

Discuss focus for Chapter 4

o The students will focus on comprehension by continuing to create a picture of a

story in their minds.

Read Chapter 4

After reading, discuss the comprehension questions below:

o How did the secret poet learn to read and write?

o Why can’t Annie attend the Olympics with Jack and Plato?

o What type of government does Ancient Greece have?

Individually, the students will complete the Chapters 1-4 comprehension quiz

Discuss the predictions each student made at the beginning of the story. How are

they turning out?

Develop a new list of predictions for the story based on the reading so far.

o The students will record their prediction on a Magic Tree House Journal Page.

Students should utilize complete sentences when making their

o What do the athletes do in the gymnasium?

o Who was Nike?

o Why is the olive tree sacred?

Individually, the students will answer the following question on a

Magic_Tree_House_Journal_Page:

o What do the winners of the Olympic games wear in Ancient Greece? How

does that compare to the winners of the modern Olympic games?

Students need to answer the question in complete sentences

After completing the Journal Page, the students will complete the first 3 sentences in

the Time-Order Words organizer.

o The sentences should describe the major events in the book to this point in the

reading.

Chapter 6

Discuss the focus for Chapter 6

o The students will focus on characters in the story and discuss their actions

Read Chapter 6

Discuss the following questions as a group:

o Where do Jack and Plato sit at the Olympics games?

o What strange trait does Jack notice about one of the soldiers?

o Who was the short soldier?

Complete the End of Book Comprehension Test

o Allow students to look back in their journals, if desired.

o Students finishing early should read “More Facts for You and Jack,” which

begins on page 71.

Close the book by having the students answer the following questions on a

Magic_Tree_House_Journal_Page:

o What was your favorite part of the book?

o Would you recommend the book to a friend?

o If you could change anything about the book, what would you change?

Students need to answer the questions in complete sentences
