Alternative: Use the slides and have all teams compete to make sentences based on the images and key words. When all possible sentences are exhausted move on to next slide.

There are 12 strips for this activity. Depending on class size give some Ss two strips, split the story in half, or give groups all the strips and have them put them in order on their desks.

Unit 18: Reading Texts

Reading 1

World War II was a deadly war that involved 30

countries. Over 50 million people were killed and

many cities were destroyed. After the war ended

in 1945, world leaders created the United

Nations (the UN) to prevent another world war.

The UN helps the nations of the world

communicate and cooperate, and promotes

world peace.

When the UN Charter was signed in 1945, there

were 51 member nations. As of 2013, 193

member states belonged to the United Nations.

The UN Headquarters is located on international

territory within New York City. Every year, over

one million visitors from around the world visit

the UN Headquarters.

Reading 2

The primary goal of the United Nations is to

promote peace and cooperation among nations.

In addition, the UN protects human rights, such

as each person’s right to have enough to eat, to

express opinions, and to be treated fairly. The UN

also helps countries with new democratic

governments. It oversees elections to make sure

they are free and fair.

Countries ask for emergency assistance from the

United Nations when they have natural disasters,

such as floods or earthquakes. The UN helps

move food and medicine to people who are

affected by disasters, wars, or poverty. These

relief efforts are part of the UN's goal of building

a worldwide community.

Reading 3

The United Nations General Assembly is the main

UN organization for discussion of international

issues. At General Assembly meetings, each

nation gets one vote. When the Assembly votes

on an important question, such as a

recommendation on peace and security, the

statement must be approved by a two-thirds

vote. A statement passed by the General

Assembly is called a “resolution.”

The UN Security Council is another important

part of the United Nations. The UN Security

Council has the power to send peacekeepers to

help prevent fighting during regional conflicts. If

necessary, it can also give approval for military

action. UN Security Council members must

always be present at UN Headquarters so that

they can act quickly.

Reading 4

There are 15 members of the Security Council,

including five permanent members and ten non-

permanent members. The five permanent

members are the countries that won World War

II: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and

the United States. The ten non-permanent

members are selected from different regions of

the world.

They are elected by the UN General Assembly for

two-year terms.

A Security Council resolution needs seven or

more votes to pass. However, any permanent

member can veto a resolution. If a permanent

member vetoes a resolution by voting against it,

is rejected, even if the other members approve it.

During her 11 years as Prime Minister, Mrs.

Thatcher helped the British economy by

supporting small businesses and by controlling

economic problems. However, many people

believe that her policies helped the rich and hurt

the poor. Margaret Thatcher died in 2013. She is

remembered as “The Iron Lady” because of her

strong character.

Warm Up

Have Ss work in pairs and discuss their knowledge about the United Nations, its history and its current

activities. Ask questions like the following:

Why was the United Nations created?

What does the United Nations do to try to prevent war?

What is the United Nations doing in the world today?

Afterward, ask some individuals to share their ideas with the class.

Main Activity 1 – Dictation

Note to T: Dictations require Ss to listen carefully to sentences based on the readings, and then work

together to reconstruct the text. Speak the dictation sentences in phrasal units to help Ss become aware of

how sentences are grouped into logical chunks.

Dictate these sentences to the class at least twice.

1) In 1945, the United Nations was created in order to prevent another world war.

2) As of 2013, 193 member states belonged to the United Nations.

3) The primary goal of the UN is to promote peace and cooperation among nations.

4) The UN also acts to protect human rights and to assist countries in establishing new democratic

governments.

Have Ss work in groups to compare the sentences they wrote. Ask groups to agree on correct

sentences. Then, for each sentence, ask Ss from two different groups to write the sentence on the

board. Have the class compare the two versions of the sentence and discuss any differences.

Tell Ss they will play a game to review the information they learned in the unit. Do not allow Ss to look at the

text. Tell Ss that there are five questions for each topic. Each question is worth 100 to 500 points. Explain that Ss or teams of Ss will take turns choosing a topic and a point value, and then you will read a sentence with a clue.

Choose a S or team of Ss to begin the game. Ask the S to choose a topic and a point value. Then read the

corresponding clue from the chart. For example, if the S chooses UN Decision-Making for 200 points, you

should read: This part of the UN has the power to send peacekeepers to prevent fighting. If the

S correctly answers “Security Council,” award the S 200 points, and have the next S choose a topic and point

value. If the S responds with the incorrect answer, ask the next S to try to answer correctly. Continue to ask

Ss until someone gives the correct answer and scores the points. After all the items have been read, the

person with the most points wins the game.

Writing Extension

Tell Ss to think about their country and its place in the world. Instruct them to write a paragraph or two

about how they think their country should interact with other countries. Tell Ss to include answers to some of

these questions:

Is your country part of a larger community of nations? Do you think it should be?

How can being part of a group of nations help a country?

How can joining a community of nations cause problems for a country?

How do people in your country feel about the United Nations?
