LESSON 26: Patience | EARLY ELEMENTARY 2

STEP 1 | Come Together (10 min)

Supplies: Three white carnations, any color of food coloring, clear drinking glass filled with water (8 to 12 ounces)

Teacher Prep: The night before this lesson, dissolve a few drops of food coloring in a glass of water and place the stem of one white carnation in the glass of colored water. Let it sit overnight and bring the carnation with you to class the next day.

• GATHER the children.

CARNATIONS• SAY, Today we are going to change the color of this carnation.• POUR a few drops of food coloring into the glass of water and let it

dissolve.• PLACE the stem of a white carnation into the colored water.• WATCH the glass as if waiting to see the carnation change color. Invite

the children to watch the glass with you. (It won’t change this quickly — it will take at least 20 – 30 minutes to start changing color.)

PATIENCE• WAIT for the children to start making comments or asking about how

long it takes.• SAY, Oh, the flower won’t change color yet — we’ll have to wait for

about a half hour to see what happens.• ASK, What is the virtue (or fruit of the Spirit) that helps us wait?

(Patience)• SAY, Patience means waiting for the right time to do something or

waiting for something you want. It can be hard to wait, especially when we have a problem. But God wants us to be patient rather than complain or get angry.

REVIEW• SAY, Today’s lesson is all about patience. We have to wait only a little

while for something kind of fun and silly, like this color-changing flower. In the Bible, there are many examples of people who waited years and years for something very important.

• SET the glass aside and check on it in about 20 – 30 minutes or after Step 2. Use the third white carnation as a control to see the progress of the dye up the stem of the second flower and into the petals. When you check on it, you should see a slight color in the petals, but it won’t

be completely changed. Show the class the first flower, the one that sat overnight, to show them how the second carnation will get even more beautiful if they are patient for that long.

KEY VERSE• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse

slowly a few times until the children are able to say it from memory.• NOTE: You may also choose to review last week’s Key Verse together.

Proverbs 14:29Anyone who is patient (hold palms out in a “stop” motion)has great understanding. (point to temple)

STEP 2 | Hear the Story (15 min)

Supplies: Believe Storybook Bible, whiteboard or flipchart with easel, dry-erase or regular markers, PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations

Teacher Prep: Draw a large three-column chart on the whiteboard or flip-chart. Label the top of the columns “Person,” “Problem,” and “Time.”

INTRODUCTION• TELL the children that they will hear about some people in the Bible

who had to practice patience.• ASK the children to listen carefully to help you complete the chart as

you read. The finished chart should look like this:

Person Problem TimeDavid Chased by Saul “Someday” became king

Man at the Pool Couldn’t walk Waited 38 years

READ CHAPTER 26• READ aloud chapter 26, “Patience,” from the Believe Storybook Bible.• SHOW the illustrations included with this curriculum on PowerPoint

slides or printable posters.

REVIEW DAVID• ASK, What might have happened if David had killed or captured Saul in

the cave? (He probably would have had to face Saul’s army; God would have been upset that he wasn’t patient)

LESSON 26: Patience | EARLY ELEMENTARY 4

• ASK, Why didn’t David just hide in the cave and ignore Saul? (He wanted to show Saul that he didn’t want to hurt him)

REVIEW THE MAN AT THE POOL• ASK, What did the man at the Pool of Bethesda do in order to be

healed? (He obeyed Jesus)• ASK, What did he do after he was healed? (He told others; he looked for

Jesus)

WRAP-UP• ASK, Can you think of any other Bible stories in which someone had to

be patient? (Joseph, Jonah, the father of the lost son, etc.)• RECORD ideas on the chart and discuss the people mentioned by the

children.• PRAY, God, please help us to become patient people. Help us to wait on

your timing in all things, and keep us from complaining or becoming angry while we wait. Amen.

STEP 3 | Explore MoreChoose from these activity options, depending on your available time frame, to help the children explore the lesson further.

Option 1: Take Up Your Mat (20 min)

Supplies: Take Up Your Mat template (one per child), three colors of con-struction paper, glue sticks, rulers, pencils, scissors, markers

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Take Up Your Mat template (one per child). Cut two colors of the construction paper into 1” strips along the shorter side of the paper. Make an example craft before class or during the craft time for the children to model their craft after. You may choose to also pre-cut the full sheets of construction paper if you would like to save time or if you have younger children who may not be able to complete that step easily.

• GIVE the children each a full sheet of construction paper, and show them how to fold it in half horizontally (like a book).

• DEMONSTRATE how to use the ruler to draw straight horizontal lines from the fold to the edge, one ruler-width apart.

• INSTRUCT the children to cut each line, starting at the fold and stop-ping about two inches from the edge.

LESSON 26: Patience | EARLY ELEMENTARY 5

• GIVE the children the paper strips and show them how to weave them through the cuts, alternating colors. Have them secure the top and bot-tom of each strip with a dab of glue.

• GIVE each child a copy of the Take Up Your Mat template.• INSTRUCT the children to cut out the verses, pasting one along one

side of their mat (John 5:8: “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”). On the other side of the mat, have the children paste the other verse (John 5:9: “The man was healed right away. He picked up his mat and walked.”).

Option 2: Saul’s Robe (15 min)

Supplies: Sticky notes, pencils, four cones or chairs

Teacher Prep: Mark off a square area of the room with four cones or chairs. It should be large enough for the children to walk around in, but small enough so they are about an arm’s length from one another.

• INSTRUCT each child to write their own name on a sticky note.• HELP the children stick the notes on their backs.• INSTRUCT the children to walk around within the square, attempting

to pull sticky notes from their classmates’ backs without getting caught.• SAY, You will have to be as quick and clever as David was when he cut a

piece of King Saul’s robe.• TELL the children that if they are caught taking someone’s sticky note

(by that person only), they have to put it back.• PLAY until several kids have taken notes without being caught and let

them reveal whose “piece of robe” they snatched.• RETURN the notes and play again, as time permits.

Option 3: Patience (15 min)

Supplies: Lined paper, pencils, construction paper, markers, glue sticks (one of each per child), whiteboard or flipchart with easel, dry-erase or regular marker

Teacher Prep: Write out the poem below where children can read it eas-ily. Cut the construction paper, if necessary, so it is slightly larger than the lined paper.

• READ the following poem out loud together:

In His Time (by Roy Lessin)I wait on God to bringall that he has promised me.And as I wait, I believe in faithin what I cannot see.

For in his way he will provideat just the perfect timeeverything that’s good and rightto bless this life of mine.

• GIVE each child a sheet of lined paper.• INSTRUCT the children to write the poem on their paper. You may

want to allow younger children to copy just the first stanza.• GIVE each child a sheet of construction paper.• ALLOW the children to glue their poem on construction paper and

decorate it with markers.

Option 4: Let’s Color! (10 min)

Supplies: Crayons or markers, Let’s Color! sheet (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Let’s Color! sheet (one per child).

Option 5: Praise and Worship (15 min)

Alexa: Ooh, doesn’t that water look nice and refreshing?

Casey: Sure does! Watch me do a cannonball into the pool!

Alexa: Wait, Casey!

Children: Be patient!

Alexa: The lifeguard isn’t here yet, so we aren’t allowed to go in. It could be dangerous.

Casey: Aw! It’s hard to wait!

Alexa: Let’s do something to get our minds off swimming. How about a treat at the snack shack?

Casey: Okay, I’d like a nice, cold lemonade.

CASEY runs off quickly. ALEXA runs after him.

Alexa: Wait, Casey!

Children: Be patient!

Casey: (upset) What now?

Alexa: Don’t you see all those people in line? You can’t just cut in front of them like that. What are you thinking?

Casey: I’m thinking this line is too long! Let’s go over to the basketball court.

Alexa: Okay, we can come back later for lemonade, I guess.

Casey: Great! I’ll race you! Last one there is a rotten egg!

CASEY runs off quickly. ALEXA runs after him.

Alexa: Wait, Casey!

Children: Be patient!

Alexa: The basketball court is across the parking lot. We can’t just run out without checking for cars. That could be dangerous!

Casey: Ugh! You keep telling me to be patient, but it’s so hard! I want to do stuff now!

Alexa: Patience is important, and these are just little things, anyway. Did you know there was a man who couldn’t walk and he waited 38 years to be healed?

Casey: Oh yeah. I remember that story from the Bible. The man waited for years to go into a special pool to be healed, but all he needed was Jesus to heal him.

Alexa: You got it! God wants us to do the right thing, and he wants us to do it at the right time. That’s patience.

Casey: Hey, speaking of pools — I think the pool is open now.

CASEY runs off quickly, then stops abruptly. He turns around and waves ALEXA on. ALEXA runs after him.

Alexa: Thanks for waiting up for me this time! Let’s go cannonball!

STEP 4 | Going Home (5 min)

Supplies: Family Page (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Family Page (one per child).

• GIVE each child a copy of this week’s Family Page.• SAY, Give this page to your family when they pick you up. It will

remind you to tell your family what you learned today about the two people who showed patience in our story today.

• HAVE the children practice telling you about what it means to be patient.

• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse as well as today’s story and Key Idea from the Believe Storybook Bible as you wait for the children to get picked up.

• MAKE sure each child remembers to take home any activity sheets or craft projects and the Family Page.

FAMILY PAGE | Lesson 26: Patience

Bible Basis: 1 Sam uel 24:1 – 22; John 5:1 – 15

Key Verse: Proverbs 14:29: “Anyone who is patient has great understanding.”

Key Question: How does God help me wait?

Key Idea: I do not get angry quickly, and I am patient, even when things go wrong.

Resource: Believe Storybook Bible , Chapter 26, “Patience”

How to Use This PageThis week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis passages from your Bible to help your child remember the lesson. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the dinner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile idea provides interactive ways for your child to connect with the story.

Table Talk 1. What does it mean to be patient? (Waiting for something you want) 2. When is it hard for you to be patient? 3. Who is someone you know who is patient? How can you tell? 4. Which stories in the Bible, besides David and the man who couldn’t

walk, show patience? 5. What is one area in which you’d like to be more patient? How can we

make that happen?

Living Faith

Option 1Encourage your child to build a shoe-box diorama illustrating the healing at the Pool of Bethesda. Gather craft supplies such as paper, pipe cleaners, fabric, craft foam, glue, scissors, and a shoe box. Use clear plastic wrap or blue paper

9780310826385_believe_curr_early_elem_11_30_4thpgs.indd 9 3/25/15 10:05 AM

Page 20: LESSON 26 | Patiencestorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch/documents...LESSON 26: Patience | EARLY ELEMENTARY 3 be completely changed. Show the class the first flower, the

for the pool. Be sure to include the mat! Will your child choose to show the scene before or after Jesus heals the man?

Option 2Make a 3-D picture of David taking part of Saul’s robe. Have your child color a picture of the scene on sturdy paper, or print one from an online image search. Add interesting dimension and texture to the picture by gluing some pebbles around the mouth of the cave, adding a scrap of real fabric, or replacing swords with toothpicks covered in aluminum foil.

Extra Mile• Teach your child patience by planting seeds together and watching them

grow. You may choose a small indoor herb garden or outdoor flowers or vegetables. Follow the care instructions on the seed packet to provide the seeds with the proper amount of sunlight and water. Once you begin to see sprouts, you can have your child measure the plants every few days to track progress.

• Come up with a family theme song for times that challenge your patience. When you anticipate a long wait or notice your child becoming impatient, sing the song together. It will help take your child’s mind off the immediate circumstances and be a reminder of the value of patience. We recommend the classic hymn “Soon and Very Soon” by Andraé Crouch or the more contemporary “Desert Song” by Hillsong.

• If your child struggles with impulsivity, play the “Silence Is Golden” game. Set a timer, starting with five minutes, and have nobody talk for that time. If someone breaks the silence, start over. Increase the time as your child adjusts to silence. This game works especially well in the car. Describe it to your child’s teacher if your child has an especially hard time talking out at school.

• If electronics are taking over in your home, declare a screen-free day of the week or period of time. The constant stimulation of movies, video games, and online entertainment can cause children to expect constant, instant stimulation. Enjoy some slower-paced family activities, such as baking or playing a board game. No multitasking allowed.
