Today we are going to solve word problems using fraction and decimal multiplication.

Here are the steps we are going to follow as we work through today’s problems.

1. Model the problem. Can you draw something? What can you draw? What conclusions can you make from your drawing?

2. Calculate to solve and write a statement.

3. Assess the solution for reasonableness.

** Students will need Problem Set for today’s lesson.

Problem 1A vial contains 20 mL of medicine. If each dose is 1/8 of the vial, how many mL is each dose? Express your answer as a decimal.

Concept Development

Another way to solve is to express 1/8 as a decimal FIRST. (1/8 = 0.125)

Then multiply that by 20 to find 2.5 mL of medicine per dose.

Problem 2A container holds 0.7 liters of oil and vinegar. ¾ of the mixture is vinegar. How many liters of vinegar are in the container? Express your answer as both a fraction and a decimal.

Another way to work out this problem….

Express ¾ as a decimal first. (3/4 = 0.75)

Then multiply that by 0.7 to find 0.525 liters of vinegar are in the container.

0.525 can be written as 525/1000 as a fraction.
