Exploring Earth’s Outer Layer

Exploring the Cross Section of Earth’s Outer Layer

In the video, you learned more about Earth’s outer layer. Throughout this unit, we will be using the Plate Motion Sim to learn about Earth’s outer layer. What does the cross section in the Sim show us about Earth’s outer layer that is not visible in the Map View or in the video?

Work with your partner to do the following:

1. Open the Plate Motion Sim.

2. Select Region 2. Use the Add Rock tool to add continents to the map.

3. Press SET BOUNDARY to select a boundary type. You can return to Build to see what happens when you select a different boundary type after you make your observations.

4. Press RUN and observe how the Cross-Section View changes as the Sim runs. You may want to press the Reset button in the top right corner to replay the Sim.

5. As you explore the Sim, answer the discussion questions below with your partner.

Discussion Questions

• What can you see in both the Map View and the Cross-Section View?

• What can you see in the Cross-Section View that you can’t see in the Map View?

• After looking at the Sim and the video, how would you describe Earth’s outer layer?

Explorar la capa externa de la Tierra

Explorar el corte transversal de la capa externa de la Tierra

En el video aprendiste más sobre la capa externa de la Tierra. A través de esta unidad, iremos usando la Simulación Movimiento de placas para aprender sobre la capa externa de la Tierra. ¿Qué nos muestra el corte transversal en la Simulación sobre la capa externa de la Tierra que no es visible en “Map View” (Vista de Mapa) o en el video?

Trabaja junto a tu compañero/a para hacer lo siguiente:

1. Inicia la Simulación Movimiento de placas.

2. Selecciona “Region 2”. Utiliza la herramienta “Add Rock” (Agregar roca) para agregar continentes al mapa.

3. Oprime “SET BOUNDARY” (Fijar límite) para seleccionar un tipo de límite. Puedes volver a “Build” (Construir) para ver qué sucede si seleccionas un tipo de límite diferente después de hacer tus observaciones.

4. Oprime “RUN” (Ejecutar) y observa cómo cambia “Cross-Section View” (Vista de Corte Transversal) mientras la Simulación corre. Tal vez quieras oprimir el botón “Reset” (Reiniciar) en la esquina superior derecha para volver a reproducir la Simulación.

5. Mientras exploras la Simulación, contesta las siguientes preguntas de discusión con tu compañero/a.
