INFORMATION GAP
Each member of your group has information about one kind of cat. Fill in the information about your cat in the correct row (largest, smallest, or fastest). In the “Interesting Information” column, please write three interesting facts about your wild cat. When you have finished, talk to your group members to complete the information about the other two wild cats. They will also ask you questions about your wild cat.

INFORMATION GAP - INSTRUCTIONS1. Cut up the reading on wild cats into three parts.2. Put students into groups of three, and give each student one part.3. Have the students read just their part and fill in the chart with their information. 4. Then, have the students ask each other questions to complete the other parts of their
chart.

The fastest land animal is the cheetah. Cheetahs can run up to
120 kilometers per hour, which is as fast as a car on the
highway. They weigh 35 to 65 kilograms, making them much
smaller than lions and tigers. In 1900, there were over 100,000
cheetahs in the world. Today, there are only around 10,000
cheetahs. Most of them live in Africa, but there are about 200
cheetahs in Iran. Unlike other large cats, cheetahs don’t growl. Cheetahs hunt during the day,
and they can spot their prey as far as five kilometers away.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many people think that the lion is the largest cat, but it is
actually the Siberian tiger. Not counting the tail, a Siberian
tiger’s body can be over three meters long. An adult male
can weigh up to 320 kilograms, but the females are much
smaller and generally weigh up to 180 kilograms. Siberian
tigers live mainly in the far eastern part of Russia, but a
small number live in northern China and North Korea. There are only about 350 to 400 Siberian
tigers in nature, and there are actually more of them in zoos than in the wild.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The smallest wild cat in the world is the kodkod, which lives in
the Andes Mountains in Chile and Argentina in South
America. Kodkods only weigh about 2 to 2.5 kilograms. They
have excellent eyesight and hearing. Their favorite foods are
birds and small rodents. When they are in danger, they climb
trees for safety. Kodkods are rare, and there are only about 10,000 of them.

WILD CATSThere are many species of cats in the world. Some of them are big, and some
are small. Some of the most interesting cats are the cheetah, the tiger, and the kodkod.
The fastest land animal is the cheetah. Cheetahs can run up to 120 kilometers
per hour, which is as fast as a car on the highway. In
1900, there were over 100,000 cheetahs in the world.
Today, there are only around 10,000 cheetahs. Most of
them live in Africa, but there are about 200 cheetahs in
Iran. Unlike other large cats, cheetahs don’t growl.
Cheetahs hunt during the day, and they can spot their
prey as far as five kilometers away.
Many people think that the lion is the largest cat, but it is actually the Siberian
tiger. Not counting the tail, a Siberian tiger’s body can
be over three meters long. Siberian tigers live mainly in
the far eastern part of Russia, but a small number live in
northern China and North Korea. There are only about
350 to 400 Siberian tigers in nature, and there are
actually more of them in zoos than in the wild.
The smallest wild cat in the world is the kodkod, which lives in the Andes
Mountains in Chile and Argentina in South America.
Kodkods only weigh about 2 to 2.5 kilograms. They
have excellent eyesight and hearing. Their favorite
foods are birds and small rodents. When they are in
danger, they climb trees for safety. Kodkods are rare,
and there are only about 10,000 of them.
Although there are many other species of wild cats, the cheetah, Siberian tiger
and kodkod are definitely some of the most fascinating.

GRAMMAR CHART
Look at the following chart. It shows us how to use the superlative form.
With one-syllable words, we add “est”. Sometimes, we have to double the consonant. Hence, “big” becomes “biggest”.
When words end in “y”, we take away the “y” and add “iest”. “Heavy” becomes “heaviest”.
When words have more than one syllable and don’t end in “y”, we use “most” plus the word. “Dangerous” becomes “most dangerous”.

SHARKS
Some of the most interesting fish in the ocean are sharks. In some form, sharks have
been around for about 400 million years, which is older than the dinosaurs, and there are about
350 kinds of sharks. Sharks have a lot of teeth, and they can actually grow and use up to
20,000 teeth in their lifetime.
The largest shark is called the whale shark, and it is also the largest fish. Whale sharks
can be a big as 15 meters and weigh as much as 13,000
kilograms. Do you think that whale sharks are dangerous?
Although they are very big, whale sharks only eat tiny animals
that drift in the sea such as plankton, shrimp, and very small
fish, and they are not dangerous to humans.
The smallest shark is the spined
pygmy shark. It is only about 18 to 21 centimeters long. It is
luminescent, which means it glows in the dark, and it lives in cold,
deep oceans.
The most dangerous shark is the great
white shark. Great white sharks grow up to four meters long, and they
have razor-sharp teeth which they use for eating their prey. Great white
sharks are carnivores, or meat eaters, and they eat fish, dolphins, seals,
and sea lions. Great white sharks occasionally attack people, usually
surfers, but attacks are rare.
The fastest shark is the Mako shark. Mako
sharks can swim 70 kilometers per hour, which is very fast! They can
also leap out of the water, and they sometimes land in boats.
One of the most interesting sharks is the hammerhead shark.
Look at the picture. Hammerhead sharks
have a head that looks like a hammer, and
their eyes and nostrils (noses) are much farther apart than other
sharks. This allows them to sense their prey much better than other
sharks.
As you can see, sharks are fascinating creatures, and there are many different kinds of
sharks.
