The June 22nd meeting started with an installment of our hosted by our President Mike Norden and assisted by 2nd VP Clinton W. Gray. The first event was Balloon dog making - teams were chosen and the team with the most complete dogs won. We really have no idea who won as some dogs were unfortunate “casualties”, after being attacked by the other team! A was next and Cameron Fisk showed off some impressive skill and clearly won the title. Next up was putting a shuffled deck into new deck order - an interesting idea and it is more difficult than one thinks. Jeremy Olson took this event! Next, two teams of three were formed, and the challenge was to make the most false knots in a length of rope in 2 minutes. Our President took a spot on one team and helped them win.. by just one knot! For the final event the teams had to throw cards into a bucket from a certain distance. Accuracy was the key here and in the end the team headed by Glen LaBarre won by a card! It was hilarious fun. June Meeting from page 1

Summer is here and Ihope everyone is bookedsolid or at least enjoyingthe sunshine! As you know, the club takes the monthsof July and August off for a

break - and a break was what we needed! What ayear this has been so far! 4 lectures, with 2 moreto go. The next one is Chris Capehart onSeptember 15th so mark that date on yourcalendar. We had the Open House, Kramiens, the Children's show and just last week the picnic.

I would like to thank everyone that made thesefunctions happen - the turnout for the eventshave been huge! Now onto some business.

In the latest TLR, there is an advertisement forliability insurance for Canadian members. Yes,you read that right...Canadian members. HKMB

Insurance is offering a great package to covermagicians, clowns, face painters, jugglers andother entertainers while performing. If you slipon that banana peel or light the curtains on fire(not sure about that one...) you can feel secure inthe knowledge that when they sue someone elseis paying the bill! Check them out:

I would recommend that everyone take a look atthis valuable tool. While we all hope nothinggoes wrong, it is better safe than sorry.

That's my tip for the month! Now, I hope tosee most of our members at the PCAMConvention our fellow Ring in Victoria ishosting on August 9-13th. If you have notregistered there is still time - go visit

Have a magical summer everyone!

Impromptu Card Magic Competition (clockwise): Bill Lee, Henry Tom,Clinton W. Gray, David Hamil, Michael Glenister, & emcee Alym Amlani.

Need we say more?

On Friday, July 7 2006, Justin Miller,of Ellusionist fame, lectured to 61Vancouver Magic Circle members andguests at Douglas College. This lecturewas unique in that is was free to the first100 people that signed up.

Justin came well prepared with hisown sound system and assistant to manhis products table. Justin started out byasking us “What was the reason you gotinto magic?”, and explained that one ofhis goals of this lecture was to get us tothink differently about our own magic.

Justin’s opener was Second Print, where a signed, selected card is reprintedon a card that was previously shown tobe blank on both sides. This trick utilizeda great move called The ImpulseChange. He followed this up with a fewother card tricks, including his recentlyreviewed trick called X Marks the Spot, which involves a pseudo demonstrationof how magicians use marked cards.

Mike Norden entertained us at half-time with a draw for the lucky number towin the entrance fee back for those whopre-registered, but unfortunately no onehad the winning number. He thenproceeded to present Justin with thecoveted IBM Ring 92 pen, and theairport approved VMC garment bag. Theusual Maple Leaf cookies were notpresented. The supplier of the cookiesclaimed this was because he was lateleaving for the lecture, but someone inthe audience claims to have seen cookiecrumbs on his shirt.

Meanwhile back at the lecture, Justincontinued with a trick utilizing loopsfollowed by some mentalism routines. The final mentalism routine was anamazing effect called Believe where oneperson selects a card and another person

writes down a word. After mentallyconjuring the name of the selected card,Justin removed a sealed envelope fromhis jacket which contained a matchingcard to the one selected, and on the backof the card was the very same wordwritten by the spectator.

Justin closed his lecture bydemonstrating a couple of coin tricksutilizing lapping. All in all, a veryentertaining lecture.

The IBM Convention was in Julyand that means a new winner for the2006 Website of the Year. This is a brief review of Justin’sWORKSHOP, not his lecture which wasreviewed by David Parker on page 3.

On Saturday, July 8, 2006,Justin Miller presented a workshopat Sands Hotel. The workshopdwelled on invisible elastic loops.Among other things, he taught thefloating ring, the floating card, aroutine with a fork jumping out of acup, and a method for having afallen cup stand upright.

Andrew Gerard and JoseAlmenares almost took over theworkshop expounding theirapproach to these techniques, butJustin managed to prevail. Justinsold some of his material at

reduced prices... I have a gutfeeling he did not want to pack itall back home.

I enjoyed the workshop morethan the lecture he gave the daybefore at Douglas College. Thatlecture focused on cards andlapping techniques which hold littleinterest to me; the invisible loopswere more my style.

An added benefit of the day wasJoe Ward and myself enjoying thepleasure of Denzil Bee havinglunch with us. As she is the newestmember of the phone committee, itwas great getting to know herbetter.

It's a beautiful day in theneighbourhood... well, ok perhaps it wasraining in the morning but the sun didcome out and we had a great picnic onSunday, July 30th!

Dave Watters was the man in chargefor this event and kudos to him for afantastic job. While the weather didcancel some of the planned events theshow must go on - and it did!

The event started at noon with Mike'sbetter half, Nicole, showing up with allthe food and getting it ready forconsumption. Dave and Cathie Wattersbrought along a BBQ and Cathie got to

work making coffee and tea foreveryone. David Wilson brought alongthe club's new BBQ that he had fixed allby himself (thanks David!) and ShawnWhithead took on the cooking duties andstarted flipping burgers for the nowgrowing crowd - but wait, did anyonebring a flipper?! Our President showedup at 12:30 with a new set of BBQ toolsin his hands to save the day. He relieveda smokey Shawn and took over the BBQduties.

Burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, chips and drinks were on the housecourtesy of your VMC. 60 burgers and50 hot dogs found their way to thestomach of the 36 members and 45guests! A great turnout for a rainy start tothe day.

A huge thank you goes out to theWatters clan for their effort in organizingthis event. Dave brought along hisbackdrop, sound system and acted asemcee while Cathy dished up the food.Jeremy and Al Olson brought along anice assortment of fruit that was eatenup, and Nicole was invaluable in gettingthe food prepared and delivered. DennisChan was busy selling 50/50 and evendonated two prizes to be won. DavidWilson brought along a cooler and theBBQ, but what else is new? This mandoes so much for this club...

And we cannot forget Claus Ritter -he donated $100 to the club to help cover

the costs of the picnic! What a donation! On behaf of all our member, thank youvery much, Claus.

Now on with the show. Dave Watterswas the emcee and started the show witha Card Stab in a paper bag. He thenintroduced 5yr old Nicolas Chow withhis assistant “Sylvia” - what? The Momis in the act now too?! Oops! He meantMelody Choi who came out and made usall go, They were adelight to watch.

Next Trevor Watters, looking like amillion dollars in his sky blue suit, did acard stab on his umbrella plus discover-ing a second card. Dave Watters did

routine to theconsternation of his five audiencehelpers, and then introduced David

Wilson. David did and ahilarious routineculminating in 20 metres of red rope tiedto both ankles when finally being pulledfree brought forth his boxer HEARTundershorts. The kids loved it... okay, sodid the adults.

David Watters next did a change bageffect ending up with TWO simultaneousbeautiful silk fountains.

The final act was Rod Chow doing hisaward winning money magic effectculminating with a hilarious lightedbanner across his chest emblazoned “In

We Trust.”

Finally, Dave Watters introduced ourPresident Mike Norden. Mike addressedthe crowd, gave them our thanks andthen got the VMC members and familyup on the stage for a group photo. It wasdone fast and efficient thanks to DavidWilson and his expertise in this field!

The 50/50 draw was next and $63.50was won by young Jessie Boyes. But,our President had an announcement - hehad $100 in gift certificates donated bywww.omnimagic.com - our newestonline sponsor! The first gift certificateof $50 was won by Alf Spence and $25gift certificates were won by MunroMacKenzie and Cathie Watters.

But then Dennis Chan had moreprizes! Jessie won a shoulder bag andthen his dad Gord won a pair ofbinoculars. Hmmm... maybe you shouldmix up those tickets more Mr. President.Gord donated the bag back which wasthen won by Anthony Young.

By this time it was 4pm and the partystarted to break up. Organizer DaveWatters was happy to have pulled offanother successful picnic. Incidentally, his employer Canada Post, was havingtheir picnic right next door. No doubtthis is why our 60 members and guestsswelled to such a large crowd for themagic show.

I just finished up both 2006 international conventions - the IBM in Miami Florida and the S.A.M. in Louisville,Kentucky. I am pleased to announce that out of 31 international contestants in the IBM close-up preliminaries, I was oneof the top six to be presented a Gold Cups finalist award on stage by IBM International president, Roger Miller.

After IBM I went on the S.A.M. convention where I am pleased to announce that I won 1st Place in the Internationalcontest of Close-Up Magic, and am honoured to have represented Vancouver, BC, Canada, to bring home the prestigiousaward.

Both were great contests where I had to repeat my Money Magic act seven times at I.B.M. (I performed three shows inthe preliminaries and four shows in the finals) and at S.A.M. in six consecutive rooms with little time for reset. I receivedwonderful audience response during my act and many raving comments afterwards. Those who have seen me performbefore noticed much improvement. To succeed as a finalist at IBM and a 1st place winner at S.A.M. were indeed proudaccomplishments after putting in so much work and refinement into my act.

Thank you to ALL V.M.C. members for all your support, feedback and encouragement! The V.M.C. really has beeninvaluable as a club which my membership and participation in, over the past 15 years, genuinely has expanded myhorizons as a magician, and which has given me the vital opportunities to learn, share and achieve which one could neverdo alone.

A special thanks to VMC Treasurer and Past President David Wilson, one of the longest and most consistent of VMCexecutive members for being there to keep the club together and strong, uphold its integrity and heritage, and for beingsuch a terrific inspiration to myself and my family.

A special and sincere thanks to S.A.M. #95 Assembly President, Lon Mandrake, for recognizing my capabilities andinviting me into the S.A.M. at the beginning. The performing opportunities, the executive duties and the sharing amongstmembers that S.A.M. have afforded me, have really helped me grow as a magician.

A special and definitely well deserved thanks to S.A.M. Regional V.P. for Canada and past IBM Territorial V.P. ShawnFarquhar for being a great mentor, for all his assistance in the construction of my act, for his invaluable technical know-how, and for his always wise, experienced and indispensable words of advice over the years.

And finally, a special and big thanks to Glen LaBarre who has spent long hours over the years coaching me andpreparing me for the competitions. His adept, quick-thinking and fertile mind was always available to provide solutions toproblems that arose and to come up with the better methods to make the magic cleaner or patter to make the act runsmoother.

Our goal was to strive for perfection, and Glen, with his un-wavering encouragement for me to have the act sopracticed and foolproof, got me to the point where I could sincerely enjoy myself while performing.

Thank you to Everyone for all your friendship. All the Best!

DETAILS

One of our out-of-town members,Dave Womach, has been extremelybusy... Last year, he was happily workingon the Norwegian Sun cruise ship, whenthe SandCastle resort in Saipan sent himan email about the possibility of himheadlining with his own show. Davequickly finished up his contract withNorwegian Cruise Lines and caught aflight to Las Vegas to meet with the CEOof SandCastle resorts.

The company loved Dave and withindays, contracts were signed, plans weremade, and opening dates were set. ByMarch, he was producing the show inLas Vegas. Throughout the rest of theyear he continued his breakneckschedule of gigs throughout the US,Canada and internationally whileworking on the new show for theSandCastle. This past March, Dave andhis team were back in Nevada, this timein Reno, rehearsing daily for well overtwo months. He purchased more than$70,000 in new illusions and costumeswith money he had saved up from thecruise ships, crated it all and senteverything to Saipan. They then spentanother month rehearsing in Saipan frommidnight to 9 a.m. every day; the onlytime the theatre was available.

The show finally opened on July 1st,2006. Currently he is doing 12 showsper week featuring all of his award-winning material as well as manyillusions. Recently added routinesinclude a levitation, (see photo), a Tableof Death, Bird to Girl, Shroud, & theMillion Dollar Mystery. When asked ifhe had time for an interview, he said, “Ofcourse, I'd love to be in the VMCnewsletter. Ask your questions... but thenI have to run! Gotta train birds, maintain
