LES NOUVELLES DE BEAIRSTO
SEPTEMBER EDITION – NEWSLETTER
Principal’s Message
Bienvenue to our new school year! Welcome to new students and staff. We are settling
into routines. Ecole Beairsto has had some renovations and changes over the holidays but
the spirit of collaboration and team work is even stronger amongst our staff and our
community. We will continue to create unique and creative ways to learn, teach and
communicate in our building. Kindness continues to be a theme that is interwoven through
all that we do. Building relationships and working on our mind sets are some of the other
main topics of this month. And of course always encouraging this to all happen in another
language ,la belle langue française Beairsto is more than a school building where teachers
work and children attend classes; it is a community that comes alive when our students,
staff and parents come together united by a spirit of caring and togetherness. Together
we create the activities and experiences which become the memories that live within each
of us…and make our school such a special place!
M. Mulvaney has gone to teach in Dubai and our new vice-principal will be arriving on the
25th of September. Her name is Maxine Champion and she comes with lots of experience in
French Immersion and administration. Bienvenue Mme Champion
We look forward to many great memories being made this year and great learning for all in
the school!
Happy New School Year! Bonne Nouvelle Année Scolaire

Volunteers and Criminal Record Checks:
We encourage and welcome parent volunteers in our school. Parents who wish to help must have a
completed CRS (Criminal Record Search). This is at no cost to you through the Ministry of Justice.
Your completed CRC will be sent directly to the District Office via email to be forwarded to our
school. If fingerprinting is required by the ministry of Justice, the cost is the responsibility of the
volunteer. This process is all online and should not take more than 5 minutes. Online link:
https://justice.gov.bc.ca/eCRC/ Access code: RRNXWDR8WH. Please indicate on the application
that you are a Volunteer for Beairsto School. .
Dress for the weather: With the weather changing, please help ensure your child dresses appropriately for the weather.
We expect all of our students to go outside for exercise, play, and fresh air in all weather
conditions, except during times of extreme weather (below -10C).
Classes, single or combined grade, are organized by balancing achievement levels, abilities, skill levels, emotional
maturity, special needs and social dynamics. The goal is to ensure that all students are placed in an appropriate
learning environment. We make decisions based on our best professional judgment and that we believe are in the
best interest of each student
Terry Fox Run on September 21st
The Run for Terry Fox will be on September 22st. There will be details to follow.
Indoor Shoes:
At Beairsto we focus on respecting our school. Please send your child to school with an inside pair
of non-marking running shoes. This will help keep our floors clean and protect our amazing gym floor.
Class composition and placements:
Teachers and staff spent many hours trying to make the best possible learning situations for each
child in our school. They met in June a few times and again this September. They put a lot of
thought and time into student and class placements. We thank you for encouraging and helping
your children adjust to this new school year. Class Placements: Class placement is probably one of the most challenging tasks for any school. Parents, students and staff have different perspectives of the needs of children and a different level of understanding of the constraints within which the school must operate. Our program is based on the following principles: - Students need to participate actively in their own learning - They learn at their own rate and in a variety of ways - They learn individually and in groups.

Aboriginal News September 13, 2017
Wayʼ, bonjour, welcome, tawnshi, tansi, láw:
Welcome back! We are glad you have arrived!!
We’ve got a new room, #11, in the
basement, which we share with M. Corbett –
the IT/ music teacher. Things will get sorted
out more as the year develops but it looks
like we will have the room during the lunch
breaks and M. Corbett will have it mornings
and afternoons. There are about 85 self-
declared Aboriginal students at Beairsto this
year.
Continuing with the rhythm from last year we will be trying to include more Aboriginal culture, history
and traditions in the curriculum. Pictured are some puppets available for classroom presentations and I am
attempting to provide new Aboriginal lesson plans for the teachers to consider each month. Several have
already signed up for these.
One of our French-Canadian moms, Mel Fortune, has volunteered to do some reading on a weekly basis
with some of our Aboriginal students and we thank her for her willingness to do this. If anyone else is
interested in assisting in similar fashion please feel free to contact me. Also teachers may contact you for
assistance with some of the hands on projects we do during the year: corn husk dolls and mini-tipis are
coming up soon.
If you have any questions, comments (positive or otherwise), or concerns please feel free to contact me at
the school via phone or email.
