MUM OR DAD

Compelling in their cowardice and hypocrisy, Marina Foïs and Laurent Lafitte indulge in formidably well-written, colorful verbal sparring, held together by fast-paced staging. Barbara Théate, JDD

The film rings resoundingly true and is jam-packed with maliciously dark humor, just how we like it. Sometimes cruel, always fair. Isabelle Giordano, Femme Actuelle

Marina Foïs and Laurent Lafitte are divorcing, and are battling it out to NOT get custody of their children. The film was written by screenwriting duo Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière (What’s in a Name) and directed by Martin Bourboulon. For his first feature-length film as a director, comedian and actor Jamel Debbouze drew inspiration from What We Did to Father, a novel by English writer Roy Lewis, published in 1960. It is the first French animated comedy made entirely with motion capture. The actors were dressed in special suits with 40 markers that enabled their movements to be captured, as well as a helmet that captured their facial expressions.

A European First!

released in the UK on February 6, 2015

Thrilling… A scorching, full-bodied, flat-out great film… Oyelowo is electrifying as Martin Luther King… tremendous. The Daily Telegraph

I think it is very important for this generation - and not just the young, but all of us - to watch a movie like Selma and to understand what we did and how we did it. We accepted the way of peace, the way of love, the way of nonviolence. Whether in America or in Europe or in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, or Central or South America, we all live in the same house: the world house. And we must live together. It is a must to work toward change. John Lewis, US congressman and one of the student leaders of the movement in 1965.

From Selma to Montgomery, a march that changed history

Lauded at the 2012 Sundance Festival for Middle of Nowhere, director Ava DuVernay tells the story of the long, peaceful march led by Martin Luther King in 1965 from Selma, a small town in Alabama, for the right for African Americans to vote. This historic conflict was instrumental in bringing about the signing of the Civil Rights Act by President Johnson. Actor David Oyelowo (recently seen in Interstellar and A Most Violent Year) brings to life the charismatic political leader, whose determination and courage left an indelible mark on American society. Oprah Winfrey, who plays activist Annie Lee Cooper, was also a producer and co-financier of the film.

by Sarah Gavron

with Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson

released in the UK on October 12, 2015

British director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) has tackled a major topic in the history of her country: the Suffragette movement. This was the name given to the militant activists who, in the early twentieth century, fought for women’s right to vote. The film stars Carey Mulligan (An Education), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) as well as Brendan Gleeson and Meryl Streep.

A hundred years after the events depicted, a film about the courageous struggle for votes for women

Lorem ipsum dolor sit ametWhat attracted me to the project was its urgent, visceral nature. It’s not a nostalgic period film that calmly celebrates major progress in women’s rights, but a brutal reminder of the sacrifices these women voluntarily made, and of what we have left to do before women are truly treated as equal. Cameron McCracken, executive producer of the film and managing director of Pathé in the United Kingdom

THEY WERE FIVE

LIVING WORKS

A FILM WITH TWO ENDINGSby Julien Duvivier

THE RESTORATION OF THE FILM

25

They Were Five was restored in 4K from the nitrate negative image. The 4K restoration was carried out by the Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna, overseen by Pathé and Christian Duvivier. More than 2,300 hours of work were needed to restore the film.

In 2015, Pathé honored Julien Duvivier through the restoration of They Were Five (1936).

They Were Five has become the emblematic film of an era: the age of the Popular Front. Charles Spaak, who co-wrote the script with Julien Duvivier, would later explain that, “it was an age when certain subjects were in the air.” Filmed over the summer of 1936, the film brought together Jean Gabin, Charles Vanel, and a young Viviane Romance in her debut film, for a story of friendship and destiny. The film had a unique career as it was screened with two different endings: one pessimistic,

the other more optimistic or “rosy”, in the words of Charles Spaak. When the film was initially released in various cinemas with the pessimistic ending, initial feedback was very negative. The producer convinced Duvivier and Spaak to film a second ending, a happier one this time. It was this second ending that would be shown for more than 70 years. Now, finally, following the wishes of Charles Spaak and Julien Duviver, the pessimistic ending has been reincorporated into the film, to be screened in a newly-restored version.

If I were an architect and I had to build a monument to cinema, I would place a statue of Duvivier above the entrance.Jean Renoir

Two other Julien Duvivier films were restored by Pathé in 2015: The End of the Day (La Fin du jour) starring Louis Jouvet

and Michel Simon (1939), and Twelve Hours to Live (aka Deadlier Than the Male) (Voici le temps des assassins) starring Jean Gabin

and Danièle Delorme (1956).

IN PARIS, A UNIQUE CONCEPT IN FRANCE A true architectural challenge, Les Fauvettes was entirely reworked, turning this cinema into a living space that blends technology with nature. This achievement was the work of three renowned architects and artists: Françoise Raynaud (architect), Jacques Grange (decorator) and Miguel Chevalier (digital and virtual artist).

Spectators are welcomed by an LED screen façade, which shows pixelated, metamorphosed advertisements; the cinema hall opens onto a bright central patio. Rest spaces made of natural materials such as wood, stone and glass are designed to make visitors want to linger before or after a screening.

It’s a place you want to stay in and come back to. A place to live in and to share.Françoise RaynaudArchitect and founder of the Loci Anima agency

At Les Fauvettes, filmmakers often present their favourite works; for example, Michel Hazanavicius and François Bégaudeau participated in the “10 x Belmondo” cycle, which featured ten unforgettable Jean-Paul Belmondo films, and Danièle Thompson presented Gérard Oury’s The Sucker.

Now there is a cinema that renders unforgettable movies everlasting.

TIMELESS FILMS IN A MODERN-DAY CINEMA Les Fauvettes offers a programme that consists exclusively of timeless and worldwide hits of all kinds, and that brings together under one roof arthouse masterpieces, American blockbusters, movie classics, comedies and animated films.
