Weekly Maths ideas Good morning, Thank you very much for all your lovely emails last week, it was a real pleasure opening up my inbox. It was great to see how hard you are all working and pleasing to see all the effort that is going into the work. It looks like many of you enjoyed the 3D shape hunt and there were some interesting shape WANTED posters. I also logged into Mathletics last night and was again very delighted to see how many of you have been using it and thank you for completing the little assignments on there for me. It really helps me to plan ahead and see how I can help you all further. I am very proud of you all. Well done and keep up the hard work. Like last week on the following slides are some suggested maths activities, for a week of fun maths learning. These skills link to our year 2 maths curriculum and are areas that we would be looking at and consolidating in school. The children will have had experience already of these skills in class, so it is an opportunity to strengthen and continue to build on these. These activities could take up to 30 minutes to complete, but this may vary depending on engagement. This weeks activity is learning to tell the time. Telling the time comes with practise, repetition and experience. It is something that the children will cover time and time again throughout each year group as they progress through the school. Telling the time can be taught practically and verbally. Use every opportunity you get in the day to practise telling the time on an analogue clock. What is the time now? What will the time be in 30 minutes time? What time will be in 1 hour? Again many of this weeks skills could be verbal activities and games . I have also included worksheets where I think it may help. I have tried where possible to include them in the Power point so you have to just print that slide, rather than adding lots of additional links on the website. Have fun and enjoy. Any problems please do contact me via email. I look forward to hearing about how it goes. Mrs Sealy , Mrs Smith and Mrs Wild [email protected]

Maths- Warm up ideas

As a warm up before each session the children could play ‘Mental Maths Train’ game to practise their mental maths skills. There are various skills to practise on each of the operation. If you choose an operation and then click on that carriage, it gives you a variety of skills to practise. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/mental-maths-train

Lesson 1- Learning to tell the time

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhk82hv/articles/zcmdwxs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEmg914-9xY

Once you have made the clock watch the video link to find out how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour. Then use your clock to practise making these on your clock

Todays lesson is a practical lesson. Where possible I would like the children to make their own clocks, so that they are able to use these in the week to help them learn to tell the time. If the children do not want to make a clock- they could use a clock from around the house to help them. It is good for the children to be able practically move the hands around to make given times. But you could do this on a home clock also. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-telling-the-time/zk4t8xs First job to make a clock. I have attached a worksheet and template on how to make a clock. This could a paper plate clock just a circle of card/paper. See the following slides.

Some advice for parents on teaching telling the time.

Now that you have made a clock and have watched the video. Start to practise telling the time to the hour or half past the hour using your clock. Activity ideas: • First recap what the different clock hands mean- the short hand is the hour hand and

the longer hand is the minute hand. Discuss what each hands job is. • Get your child to make a given time e.g. can you show me what 10 o’clock would look

like on the clock? Now show me 1.30 on the clock? • Then try it the other way around show them a time on the clock and ask them to tell

you what the time is. So that they are both reading and making a given time. • There are also some games on the links below which your child could try ready for

tomorrows learning. • https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhk82hv/articles/zcmdwxs

Lesson 2- Telling the time to the hour and half past the hour

In todays lesson I would like the children to continue reading and telling the time to the hour and half past the hour. Below is a video link to recap how to read the time to o’clock and half past the hour. After they have watched the video on how to tell the time to the hour and half past discuss what they watched on the video. Here are some suggested questions to ask: Which is the hour hand? How do you know? Which is the minute hand? What happens to the minute hand? Where should the minute hand be when it is an o’clock time? Where should the minute hand be when it is an half past the hour?

O’clock

When the big hand is on the 12, and the small hand is on another number, the number the small hand is on is the time, to the hour. E.g. 5 o’clock:

Why don’t you use your clock to try a few examples.

When the big hand is on the 6 (half past = halfway round the clock), and the small hand halfway between two numbers, the number the small hand has just gone past is what is half past, e.g. half past five:

Half past the hour

Why don’t you use your clock to try a few examples.

Worksheet challenges There are a variety of sheets to support todays learning. I would expect the children to complete the worksheets on reading and telling the hour and half past the hour (20minutes). However for those that wish to I have put some challenge sheets on reading and telling the time to quarter past the hour. These are a challenge I would not expect all children to complete these, so please do not push if your child is not ready. Focus on being able to read the time to the hour and half past. Telling the time comes with practise and experience and it is a valuable life skill to read an analogue clock. The more we expose and ask the children what the time is the more confident their skill will become. Worksheet 1 and 2- reading and telling the time to the hour Worksheet 3 and 4 - reading and telling the time to half past the hour Worksheet 5- challenge sheet- reading times to quarter past the hour Worksheet 6- blank clocks faces to make up your own times for the children

When the big hand is on the 3, it’s quarter past the number the small hand has just gone past. E.g. quarter past five:

In todays lesson I would like the children to practise telling and reading the time to quarter past and quarter to the hour. Below is an example and some links to video clips.

Why don’t you use your clock to try a few examples.

Worksheet challenges There are a variety of sheets to support todays learning. I would expect the children to complete the worksheets on reading and telling the time to quarter past and quarter to the hour (20minutes). However for those that wish to I have put some challenge sheets on reading and telling the time to 5 minute intervals. These are a challenge I would not expect all the children to complete these, so please do not push if your child is not ready. Focus on being able to read the time to the hour, half past, quarter to and quarter past. Telling the time comes with practise and experience and it is a valuable life skill to read an analogue clock. The more we expose and ask the children what the time is, the more confident their skills will become. Worksheet 1 and 2- reading and telling the time to quarter past the hour Worksheet 3 and 4 - reading and telling the time to quarter to the hour Worksheet 5- challenge sheet- writing in 5 minute intervals on a clock Worksheet 6 and 7- challenge sheet-reading and telling the time to 5 minute intervals

Lesson 4- Mathletics

I have put a task on Mathletics for the children to complete- it will be available on Thursday morning until Sunday evening. This is a good way for me to see how the children are developing in these skills and how and where I can further support their learning. The task incorporates all learning from this weeks lessons. https://login.mathletics.com/ Have fun. Well done on your maths learning this week.

Lesson 5- Optional learning It is a Bank holiday so I would not expect the children to be learning, however I have attached a worksheet for them to complete if they wish to. The worksheet looks at small time intervals problems. So for example if Peter left the house at 4 o’clock and it took him 1 hour to get to his Nanas house what time would he arrive? These questions can be easily made slightly more challenging if needed. For example- instead of an hour interval- you could make it an 1 hour 30 minutes or 3 hours. E.g. • If Jon left the house at 5am and it took him 3 hours to get to the beach what time did

he arrive at the beach? • If Simon wanted to get to the swimming pool for 3 o clock and it takes him 2 hours what

time would he need to leave?
