Talamanca es la tierra
indígena más extensa y
poblada de Costa Rica.
Sus habitantes resistieron la
conquista cientos de años.
Talamanca is the most
extensive and populated
indigenous area of Costa Rica.
Its inhabitants resisted colonization
for hundreds of years.
Por ley, es
tierra
exclusiva
de las
familias
indígenas.
Legally the land
is exclusively
held by
indigenous
families
- - - - -
- - - - -
Therefore, in this area “the land” continues to be their “mother land”,
the land of the indigenous families who gather its fruit.
ACOMUITA es la
Asociación de
Mujeres Indígenas
Bribri de
Talamanca que
recoge y procesa
el cacao de las
familias
asociadas, que
convierte en
chocolate o
“tsirúshka”.
ACOMUITA is the
Association of
Bribri indigenous
women of

who collect and
process the
cacao of the
member
families, which is
made into

This association, supported by the Talamanca Development Union
(UDT), accepted the challenge of promoting a group of artisans.
- - - -
artesanas.
UICN promovió -mediante el
Proyecto Alianzas, financiado por
el Gobierno de Noruega- el
encuentro de una artista con las
artesanas, para juntas desarrollar
un lenguaje artístico con
identidad.
The IUCN, through the Alliances
Project, financed by the
Norwegian government,
sponsored the encounter of an
artist with the artisans to jointly
develop an artistic expression of
their identity.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
El proceso se inspira en algunas
artes tradicionales como el labrado
de jícaras y los tejidos.
This process is inspired by some of
the traditional art such as the
traditional calabash bowls and woven
materials.
- - - - - - - - - - -
También
se inspira
en su relación
y conocimiento
de la
naturaleza.
Inspiration
also comes
from their
relationship to
and knowledge
of nature.
- - - - - -
- - - - -
La experiencia de encontrar
un lenguaje propio pasó por
retratar el paisaje, retratarse
como mujeres, interpretar
su flora y fauna.
The experience of
discovering a unique
language of their own
involved portraying the
landscape, portraying
themselves as women,
interpreting their flora and
fauna.

Drawing with a pencil but also painting with local products
such as cacao, curcuma and the “achiote” fruit.
- - - -
-
-

Crear sellos de
tajadas de ramas
del cacao e
imprimirlos con el
fruto del achiote.
Creating designs out
of slices of cacao
branches and
making prints using
“achiote” fruit.

culturas ancestrales
permite diseñar el
espacio con hojas y
fibras recortadas.
Lines and geometric
patterns of ancestral
cultures help
designing space with
cut leaves and other
fiber pieces.

Melting paraffin together with cacao made
aromatic candles.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - -
grupo. Las candelas se colgaron con
la tradicional cuerda tejida de la
mata de pita.
Pouring the paraffin with the dry
and cured cacao
led to the discovery of the group’s
unique product. The candles are
hung with the traditional cord
woven out of the pita plant.

Otras se colocaron
dentro de un mini-
canasto de bejuco
real, extraído de las
montañas.
Others are placed
in a mini-basket of
“bejuco” reeds,
brought down from
the mountains.
Raw fabric was sealed with glue to make canvas.
- - - - -
Con esténciles
conservamos espacios
vacíos y llenamos otros
con una mezcla
de tierra y goma.
Using stencils to block out
areas, we painted the
open spaces with
an earth and glue mix.
- - - - - - - - -
Upon drying, the dirt mixture would sometimes crack, until they
found a soft mud, at the base of a waterfall that did not crack.
- - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - -
CACAO).
The group called itself TIERRA TSIRÚ (CACAO
EARTH).
.
- - - -
TIERRA TSIRÚ is now finding its way to move out
and find places where this unique product is appreciated.

No las tiendas de souvenirs que
pagan poco y no tienen espacio
para contar la historia del
producto, sino tiendas y
espacios de hoteles o galerías
que incluyan datos importantes
de las artesanas y de sus
productos.
Not the souvenir shops which pay little and do not have space to
recount the history of the product, but rather stores and spaces in
hotels or galleries that can include important information about
the artisans and their products.

Telling one’s story is part of the experience needed
to create art inspired in one’s identity.

Despite colonization, this area of
Panama succeeded
in defending its culture.
Nevertheless, with the coming
of the banana company
everything changed.
For many years speaking
their language at school
was prohibited.

Grandmothers spent many hours preparing the pita fiber and dying
it with natural colors to weave the “kra”, the bags that cradle babies
after birth.
- - - - -
Like their grandmothers,
the women today
learned to make them
while adolescents
and still use them
as cradles, or to
carry their farm
products or fish.

“Our clothes are also part of our culture. Our dresses and the
natural makeup which both men and women use
have geometric figures, especially triangles,
which reflect the mountains in our natural environment.”- - - - -
“cuentas”.
Since times past “chakira” beads covered their chests.

Craftswomen and their organizations now have developed
a new interest in recovering their culture
and protecting their environment, by enjoying their
empowerment as craftswomen and entrepreneurs.

Han creado
organizaciones que las
fortalecen; les
permiten enfrentar el
machismo y obtener
capacitación.
Ahora las
comunidades
indígenas y las
mujeres, conocen sus
derechos y muchos de
sus hijos e hijas son
profesionales.
They have created
organizations that
bolster themselves,
helping them to
obtain training and
to face “machismo”.
The indigenous
communities and
the women now
know their rights
and many of their
children are in the
professions.

identidad antigua.
The Bocas Alliance Consortium, which is part of the Alliances
Project supported by Norway’s cooperation with the UICN,
backed the Network of Craftswomen of Bocas del Toro, Panama,
to develop also a new craft language based on their ancient
identity.

Un ejercicio del grupo fue la
aplicación de los diseños de
sus vestidos en cuadros tipo
“collage” con papeles de
colores.
One group exercise was to
apply their dress designs in
collage type of patterns with
colored paper.
- - - - - - - - - -
The line, the triangle and the contrasting colors were
transferred to small designs and then reviewed by the group.
Together they analyzed the best designs and those which
could be improved.
They also saw the need to organize the space, in their homes
and in their time, to be able to develop their art production.

camisetas, bolsos.
They applied their designs
to various household items
like notebooks, T shirts and handbags.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
productos.
Some women had well-developed products. The workshop
was an ideal place to analyze the quality,
price and appearance of these products.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
They made cloth pictures based on the designs on paper.
- -
-
- -
- -
- -
- -
-
They did exercises in black and white to learn
new ways to design..

The “chakiras” or beads were also made into yet smaller
products. Small “jewels” with their packaging and labels.
- -
-
- -
-
They experimented
joining
the chakiras with
cloth.
Se jugó uniendo “chakiras” con telas.
- - - - - - - - - -
- - - - -
They talked about tourism and the opportunity to offer small
products based on the designs: SMALL JEWELS
to be sold at a fair price.
- - - - - - -
Later they went out to talk with possible clients.

La artesanía permite
el desarrollo del

speaks of the
relation of
indigenous
women with
nature, their
desire to make
use of it as well
as conserve it.
El lenguaje

contemporáneo
cuenta la relación
de las mujeres
indígenas con la
naturaleza; su afán
de aprovecharla y
al mismo tiempo
de cuidarla.

La comercialización
de éstas “joyas”
puede lograr que se
pague su valor
cultural-histórico, su
valor creativo y
único, y su trabajo
manual.
Marketing these “jewels”
should adequately pay
for their cultural-historic value,
their unique creative value,
as well as the hand labor involved.

La producción y venta de productos
artesanales contemporáneos con
identidad y precios de venta
adecuados puede generar una
mejor calidad de vida para
las comunidades.
The production and sale of
contemporary crafts with cultural
identity at fair prices can generate
an improved
quality of life
in their communities.

Art and crafts transform the lives of indigenous and rural
craftswomen of Central America, if their is follow-up and
technical direction from the original conception of a product
up to its production, commercialization and marketing.

destrezas.Practical and systematic workshops with women in their own

This way, their products acquire the quality the market
