Water Reclamation System
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The house collects approximately 80% of the rainwater that falls on the house and garage roofs through a series of roof drains and leaders that direct the water to two water tanks outside the lower lever sitting room. These two tanks hold a total of 3400 gallons of water that is re-used for landscape irrigation and waste water (toilet)purposes.Thecollectedwateristhenpumpedthroughoutthehouseandfilteredforuseinlandscapeirrigation and toilets. The water is clearly marked as non-potable at the hose-bibs that are located around the house and is not suitable for drinking. However, this system greatly reduces the demand and use of potable water from the on-site well, which was installed during an historic drought in the Asheville region.
If this system of rainwater collection were more universally used, the collection of rainwater from building sites would diminish the likelihood of municipal water systems and help keep local taxes lower. The reduction of rainwater being drained throughout the property lessens soil erosion and deterioration of the site. Additionally, theOwnerandthecommunitybenefitsfromdecreasedpressureonthelocalwatertable.

Green Roof
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The use of vegetation on the roof surface as a substitute for a typical heat absorbing roof membrane is an optimal way to decrease the ‘heat island effect’ resulting from buildings replacing the natural landscape. Green roofs cool the air through evapo-transpiration, the natural process by which water is transferred from plants back into the atmosphere. Additionally, green roofs help provide cleaner air, are great insulators, aesthetically pleasing, require less maintenance than conventional roofs and have longer life than conventional roofs.
Due to green roofs’ capacity to reduce ambient air temperatures, smaller air-conditioning equipment can beusedtoservicethehouseandtheOwnerbenefitsfromlowerelectricaldemands.Asaninsulatorthatsupplements the interior insulation within the building envelope, green roof the will also contribute to lower heating demands during the winter, as Asheville’s mountainous locale includes several months of cold winter weather.
Not only does the green roof reduce the house’s ‘heat island effect,’ the local microclimate does not suffer from an increase in ambient temperatures and contributes to the site’s absorption of carbon dioxide. Finally, water run-off from the site is reduced due to the roof’s absorption of rainwater, diminishing site erosion in the process.

Native and Adapted Species & Drought Resistant Landscaping
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Using native and or climate-adapted species in this drought resistant landscape dramatically reduces and may even eliminate irrigation needs. The use of reclaimed rainwater for the little irrigation required means no use of potable water from the on-site well, and no diminishing of the local water table levels. Additionally, the use of native species enhances habitat for local species.
This un-built landscape is not impeded on extensive non-absorptive hardscape of the built environment, allowing water to percolate back into the aquifer, and decreases the ‘heat island effect’ by helping maintain lowerambientairtemperatureswhileprovidingshadeandaidingpassivesolardesign.TheOwnerbenefitsfrom pleasant views, less use of energy and cleaner air.

Pervious Pavers
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
As an alternative to conventional concrete or stone walkways, the pavers used on the entry walk and the green roof allows the rainwater that hits these surfaces to percolate through the material into the ground. In turn, this allows the rainwater to reach the soil without contributing to soil erosion and most importantly, allows thesenormallyimpermeablesurfacestocontributetotherefillingofthelocalaquifer.

Furniture
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
By having the furniture locally made, one avoids having to transport the furniture from further away locations, cutting down on the fuel required for the additional travel, the energy and emissions required to produce the fuel, the pollution produced by the additional travel. This contributes to cleaner air, lower cost and support of the regional economy.
By using reclaimed materials in the manufacturing of the furniture, one avoids the extraction, production and transportation of new materials, the energy for the production and the emissions. Reclaimed materials tend to be of better quality and with time become an investment.

Program Zoning
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
By strategizing with the Client to come up with a room and use layout that allows for certain zones to be shut down throughout the year when they are not needed, the energy demands of this house are decreased from more conventional layouts.
Three distinct heating and air-conditioning zones exist in this house. On the upper level, the master suite is zoned separately from the kitchen, dining and living areas, allowing for day- and night-time isolation of the heating and air-conditioning equipment dedicated to these two living areas. The lower level consists of two guestsuitesandasittingroom.Thisfloorcanbecompletelyshutofffromtheupperlevelbytheuseofalargesliding panel at the base of the stairs. As this wing will only be used intermittently during the year, its physical separationfromtheupperlevellivingquarterswillprovidesignificantsavingsinheatingandair-conditioningcosts and diminish the related environmental degradation associated with energy use.

Geothermal Systems
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Geothermal heating systems can extract up to 6 times the heat energy they use in electrical energy. They are atleast3to6timesmoreefficientanduse1/6theelectricityofconventionalhouseholdheatingandcoolingsystems. The economic savings associated with home heating can be up to ¾ of the cost of electrical heating and the savings in cooling can be up to ¼ - ½ of the cost of a traditional air conditioning system.
The system is made of fewer parts making them more reliable, with hardly any failures and minimal maintenance. It does not have any external parts so there is limited risk of weather damage or vandalism. Additionally, geothermal systems have a longer life than standard systems.
Intermsoflifesafety, thereisnoriskofcarbonmonoxidepoisoningandmuchlowerriskoffiresascomparedtooil powered systems. The system is virtually noise free, and requires less space for storage of equipment.
Most importantly, geothermal systems provide a renewable source of energy. There is no pollution caused the system. The small amount of heat extracted from the home during the hot weather cooling system is not sufficienttocauseadverseeffectsonthefloraorfauna.
This system combined with the supply of electricity by a green electricity supplier would heat and cool the home without creating any greenhouse gas emissions. The system itself does not contribute to global warming.
Dependingonuseand local climate, the anyupfront costs requiredby the field’s installation is offset bydiminished electricity bills, and will pay for itself within 2-10 years, not including any of its eligible tax credits from the government.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
LED bulbs burn very cool, while incandescent bulbs emit 98% of their energy as heat. This means that LED bulbs will not burn as fast and will decrease the cooling loads on the Air Conditioning, which implies smaller equipment and energy consumption and lower energy bills.
LED bulbs can last from 50,000 to 100,000 hours while incandescent bulbs typically last around 1,000 hours and fluorescent around 10,000 hours. The long life of the bulbsmeans less bulb changing and greatersavings.Inaddition,LEDlightshavenofragilefilamentandnofragiletube.Theyareresistanttoheat,coldand shock.

Insulation
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Havingtherightamountofinsulationandproperinstallationarethekeystoacomfortable,energy-efficienthome. It allows to minimize the heat gain during the summer and heat loss during the winter, decreasing the demand on the mechanical systems. Proper installation helps control moisture damage and condensation, and minimizes temperature variability indoors. Less condensation and moisture increases durability of the home by minimizing the potential decay of building materials.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The north façade is solid construction with no openings. This heavily insulated wall, oriented away from the primary views, acts as a barrier to northerly winds. The front (east) elevation is mostly solid construction with high openings for ventilation, while the west and the south facades have deep overhangs and are mostly glazed walls to allow for the heat and light of the sun to penetrate deep into the house during the colder winter months. These same overhangs protect the interior living spaces from direct sunlight during the hottest summer months, when the sun is highest in the sky.
The use of overhangs and manually operated solar shades prevents unwanted sun to enter the home during the summer, decreasing the demand for air-conditioning. Similarly, the strategic planning of window openings maximize sun penetration during the winter, providing natural heat and light, which in turn cuts the demand for artificialsupplyoftheseenergiesandtheemissionscausedtocreatethem.
The use of solar shades allows the view to be maintained even when down, but can greatly diminish unwanted heat gains from the sun when the overhangs no-longer provide the needed protection, particularly late in the day along the western side of the house. These shades will serve to extend the life of materials and furnishings susceptible to fading and degradation while diminishing the use of energy during the peak use summer months.

Natural Cross Ventilation
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The use of windows for natural ventilation allows for the Owner to control the thermal comfort without the use of mechanical equipment. This allows for smaller equipment to be used, less demand, causing a savings in energy and cost. It also reduces the emissions from generating the energy to function the mechanical equipment.

Propane Gas
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Propane gas is similar to natural gas in that it is a clean-burning, environmentally friendly fuel that can be stored safely in the residential underground tanks. It runs much more cleanly than oil as well. When compared tonaturalgas, propaneislessexpensive, moreefficientandmoreversatileinitsapplication.Propanegasisused for in this house for cooking, clothes drying and for the emergency generators, which can operate the house for approximately one week in case of power outage. The generator is also used to run the geothermal systemincaseofsuchanoutage.Duetoitsoperatingefficiency, onerequiresmuchlessofthisgasthancomparable fuels to run the equipment making it extremely cost effective. Unlike competitive fuels, most propane used in the US comes from North America resources, diminishing cost and emissions from long distance transportation of the fuel.

White Roof Membrane
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The highly reflective white membrane provides significant energy savings to the house as compared tostandardblackroofs, byreflectingthesun’srays, diminishingheatgainandtherelatedburdenstotheAirConditioning system. Also, by being non-absorptive, the material does not deteriorate due to UV exposure and the intense solar heat, which will require less maintenance and more cost savings throughout the life of the building.
ThewhiteroofmembraneprovidesahighSolarReflectanceIndex(SRI),whichisameasureofthematerial’sability to reject solar heat. Surface temperatures of darker membranes can be up to 90 degrees (F) above that of the ambient air; by using a white roof the heat gain and deterioration caused by this intense heat is drastically reduced. Since the material is incapable of absorbing and transferring the solar heat through convection to and conduction to the building and the local environment, it is a great solution to reduce the ‘heat island effect’ of the built environment. As a result, lower cooling loads will be experienced during the summer months.Smallerair-conditioningequipmentcanbeusedtoservicethehouseandtheOwnerbenefitsfromlower electrical demands. In addition, by reducing the Heat Island Effect, the local microclimate is not impacted by an increase in ambient temperatures or related smog, and the lower cooling loads and energy requirements contribute to a decrease on the associated emissions due to the reduced power required for the air-conditioning equipment.
