Legend Of Sangkuriang Once upon a tim e in west Jav a, Indonesia live d a wise king who had a beautifu l daughter. Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She liked weaving very much. Once she was weaving a cloth when one of hertool fell to the ground. She was v ery tired at the time so she was too lazy to ta ke it. Then she jus t shouted outloud. ‘Anybody there? Bring me my tool. I will give yo u specia l presen t. If you are female, I will consider you as my sister . If you are m ale, I will marry you Suddenly a m ale dog, its nam e was Tum ang, came. He brought he r the falling too l. Dayang Sumbi was v ery surprised. She regretted her words but sh e could not deny it. So she had to m arry Tumang a nd leave her fa ther. Then they lived in a small village . Several months later they ha d a son. His name was Sangkuriang. He was a handsome and healthy boy. Sangkuriang liked hunting v ery much. He often went hunting to the wood using his arrow. When he went hunting Tumang always with him. In the past there were many deer in Java so Sangkuriang often hunted for deer. One day Dayang Sumbi wanted to have deer’s heart so she asked Sangkuriang to hunt for a deer. Then Sang kuriang we nt to the wood with h is arrow and his faithfu l dog Tumang. But afterseveral days in the woo d Sangkuriang cou ld not find any deer. They were all disap peared. Sangkuriang was exha usted and despera te. He did not want to disappoint her mother so he killed Tumang. He did not know tha t Tumang was his father. At home he gave Tumang’s heart to hermother. But Dayang Sumbi knew that it was Tumang’s heart. She was so angry that she could not control her emotion. She hit Sangkuriang at his head. Sangkuriang was wounded. There was a sca rin his head. She also repelled her son. Sangkuriang left her mother in s adness. Many years passed and Sangkurian g became a strong young man. He wandered everywhere .
