LEGAMBIENTE

WHO ARE WE?

Legambiente is a non-profit leading environmental organisation in Italy that works for the safeguarding and

enhancement of natural resources; environment; common health; animal and plant species; historical,

artistic and cultural heritage; territories and landscapes. It is formed by 20 regional committees and around

1000 local groups. Since its foundation in 1980, Legambiente’s hallmark is the scientific environmentalism,

which is the willingness to build every environmental protection project on a solid base made of scientific

data.

Legambiente’s mission is to make environmental culture at the centre of a new kind of development and

diffused well-being. Important values for the association are the improvement of environmental quality,

the fight against all forms of pollution, a wise use of natural resources, the construction of a more balanced

relationship between human beings and the nature. Spreading those values could be an effective way to

respond to the challenges of our time: the modernization of the economy, the commitment to beat

unemployment, the struggle for peace and against all forms of discrimination and social injustice, the effort

to consider globalization not only as a mere trading of goods but also as a means to improve quality of life

and to give rights to billions of men and women forced to live in poverty.

LEGAMBIENTE’S WORKCAMPS

Legambiente has been organising volunteering campaigns since 1991, promoting summer-camps in many

protected areas both in Italy and abroad.

Voluntary work camps have three main objectives:

- safeguard and enhance the Italian environmental, historical, cultural and artistic heritage;

- raise the awareness of local communities and foreign volunteers about the value of the natural and

cultural heritage and spread sustainable and responsible lifestyles;

- build peace through cultural exchange.

Voluntary projects also help in promoting green tourism, developing sustainable economy, stimulating

people to be active citizens and participate in decision-making processes that shape their future as

communities.

Work organization. Each work camp can be differently organized according to its specific needs.

Volunteers will be working approximately 30 hours/week. Sometimes they may be asked for working over

the weekend or early in the morning in case of high temperature.

Volunteers are expected to be open-minded, flexible, and adaptable to different situations. Moreover, they

need to be inclined to face either lacks or unexpected events with a positive attitude.

Not elsewhere specified, special skills are not required. Nevertheless, participation, enthusiasm and

motivation are welcome!

Usually volunteers sleep in mixed rooms. Single or double rooms are not available. Shifts for cooking and

cleaning are scheduled during the first day.

Each volunteer is responsible for all aspects of the daily life on the work camp.

Food. In the most part of our workcamps food will be almost vegetarian and based on local products.

Volunteers will eat meat a very few times.

Language: English is the official language of the work camp. Nonetheless, in some workcamps implemented

in remote villages, local communities can only speak Italian.

Each workcamp will host a maximum of 2 volunteers for each country, in order to create a heterogeneous

group and to foster a real cultural exchange.

Participation fee: adult workcamps don’t foresee any additional fee. In teenage and family workcamps a

participation fee is required and is to be brought in cash directly to the camp; the whole amount is

addressed to the local group organising the camp and will be totally used to cover part of the expenses of

the camp itself.

Insurance: volunteers are insured for permanent damages caused by accidents and third person liability.

For non-European volunteers, it is recommended to be provided with a health insurance.

Type: Environmental

Number of volunteers: 12

Age: 18 - 65

Description

Project Venice and its Lagoon (UNESCO's World Heritage) with their delicate ecosystem, are attacked

everyday by a huge amount of garbage that enhances environmental damage.

Legambiente Venezia and Ispra Chioggia (the local branch of the Italian Institute for Environmental

Protection and Research) have planned and carried out “Don't Waste Venice”, the first monitoring activity

of floating litter in Venice's canals, enlarging the target area from the city to the islands of the lagoon,

reaching what is now the Northern Lagoon Regional Park (recently created by Venice's municipality). The

The project will gather as much information as possible on the kind of litter and debris found.

The volunteers will participate in the land and water monitoring activities, in the cleaning and maintenance

of the smaller islands of the lagoon, many of them abandoned to degradation.

The most part of the activities will be carried out in Certosa Island, situated in a strategic position – at the

same time in the port’s entrance and in the city – in the middle between Venice historic centre and high

sea. The island hosted a convent from 1200 to 1500, then it was used for military purposes until 1950

when, after a demilitarisation process, was abandoned.

Legambiente local group: For 10 years Legambiente Venezia has been organising workcamps on Certosa

island and around the northern part of Venetian lagoon, in order to increase the active participation of

young people and citizens and to increase the awareness about environmental issues concerning the fragile

lagoon ecosystem. The club is concerned with some global-local environmental problems like cruiser ships

passing through the very heart of the city, sustainable tourism, information to the citizens about the

environmental problems, arise the consciousness about the importance of lagoon as common good.

Work: The volunteers’ concrete activities will be the monitoring and collection of waste, by boat and on

foot in Venice historic centre, beaches and islands. They will also help Legambiente local group in the

spreading of informative material to sensitize citizens, tourists and visitors about the respect towards the

lagoon. The main aim of the activity though is to start collecting and disposing of floating garbage, as well

as sunk and stranded waste within the internal areas of the lagoon, through national and international

volunteering activities, involving citizens and tourists and disseminating good practices towards a collective

responsibility.

Study part: educational activities on marine litter, nature conservation and monitoring, with the support of

ISPRA technicians; study meeting with the Natural History Museum and the Naturalistic Obsevatory of the

Lagoon.

Accommodation and food: Volunteers will be hosted in Certosa island in tents equipped with camp beds,

kitchen and living tents. Bathrooms and showers are close to the camping site. A low-flesh diet, according

to the global environmental problems, will be a commitment for volunteers.

Location and leisure: The UNESCO World Heritage property comprises the city of Venice and its lagoon

situated in the Veneto Region of Northeast Italy. In this lagoon covering 50,000 km², nature and history

have been closely linked since the 5th century when Venetian populations, to escape barbarian raids, found

refuge on the sandy islands. These temporary settlements gradually became permanent and the initial

refuge of the land-dwelling peasants and fishermen became a maritime power.

Venice and its lagoon landscape are the result of a dynamic process which illustrates the interaction

between people and the ecosystem of their natural environment over time: the city is built on 118 small

islands and seems to float on the waters of the lagoon, composing an unforgettable landscape.

Special Requirements: swimming and walking ability, no seasickness

Language: English will be the official language in the camp.

The square is located in the heart of the town. Until the ‘90 the square was the place where young people

could meet and socialize, and the location of important and interesting cultural activities. For almost two

years, it was closed to the public because of the restoration of its monuments and the laying of new

flooring. At its reopening, it has lost its social value no longer able to aggregate the new generations in it.

We would like a cozy, green and crowded square. We want to imagine an eco-creative Square, redesigned

with the use of sustainable materials and structures.

The motivation of the camp is linked to the revival of the community spirit that takes care of its spaces and

lives them intensively.

Legambiente local group: Legambiente local group in Eboli was born in 1997 thanks to the fusion with

another local group, its name is "Silaris". The Legambiente Silaris statute says that: "…Legambiente is a

volunteer Association. Its members attend to the activities in an individual way, spontaneous and free, only

for solidarity. It acts for a society based on an equilibrate relation between humans and nature, for the

respect of the biodiversity; and for a sustainable development for the defence of the environment and of

the cultural heritage."

The local groups counts 60 members that dedicate their free time to the Association. The age of our

members goes from 16 to 75. They share several different moments of socialization.

The Association house in Eboli is located in the old part of the city. It is a nice building recently constructed.

Here a list of our main activities:

- Preservation of the local dune restricted area "Legambiente Silaris" along the coast of our city. This part of

the coast belongs to the "Natural Reserve Foce-Sele" moreover it is a special area recognized by the E.U. as

Sic IT 805001.

- Environmental Education in the schools in Eboli.

- Awareness campaigns for students and people about: energy; pollution, waste; studies about the

vegetation; coastal erosion.

- Partnership with public Institutions for serious environmental problems.

- Partnership with other Associations and with the Csv Sodalis Salerno about peace, racism, social and

cultural growth.

- Project "Orti di Città" for elder people.

- Summer work-camp during summertime.

- Voluntary Civil Service

- Dog-sitter project to help dogs without any owner, in cooperation with the league for the protection of

dogs. Our Association would like to continue and improve the promotion and valorization of the voluntary

activities as a form of social and political participation, because we think that "another world is possible"

and that is necessary to build up a society more equitable and sustainable.

Legambiente Silaris Eboli have been running national and international volunteer camps in Eboli for over

ten years.

Work: The purpose of the camp is the urban regeneration through sustainable decorations.

We want to make livable and crowded the main Republic Square in Eboli. The camp will take place mainly

in the Square. The main activities will be: cleaning of the War memorial; cleaning and maintenance of the

gardens and flowerbeds already existing (thematic flowerbeds: herbs, evergreens, local flowers, etc.);

maintenance and repainting public existing seats; installation and painting of flower boxes for urban

decoration to be placed in front of the elementary school to be managed by classes; installation of

ecological benches obtained by the recovery of used platforms; "Games of yore", construction of ancient

games, placed near the school; installation of a bus shelter with recyclable material and creative painting

Accommodation and food: The volunteers will be hosted in “San Pietro Alli Marmi”an ancient Norman

abbey with an important historical Library. Four bedrooms will be available, with two common bathrooms

and two showers. The kitchen will be located in Legambiente home and local typical products will be used

for the meals. Internet access won’t be available.

Location and leisure: Eboli is a Southern town with approximately 38.000 inhabitants.

As agricultural center, Eboli is known mainly for olive oil and for dairy products, among which the most

renowned is the buffalo mozzarella.

One part of the mountains that surround the town of Eboli belongs to Picentini Park. The archaeological

excavations prove that the Eboli area has been inhabited since the Copper and Bronze Ages, and attested

(from the 5th century BC) the presence of the so-called Villanovan civilization.

The center of the town is characterized by a square from the elliptical shape that retains the charm of a

nineteenth century ambient. The monument is dedicated to the fallen during the First World War. The

square is crowded during Sunday mornings. Inside the square there are historical monuments, fountains,

seating and public gardens.

The old town in Eboli is very nice and characterized by very important historical streets and buildings. There

are many restaurants where you can taste local dishes.

During the workcamp there will be an excursion tour in Pompeii.

The volunteers will visit the areas managed by Legambiente in the territory of the Campania region.

Language: English will be the official language in the camp.

- Maremma Natural Park: The Maremma Regional Park was founded in 1975. It is located along the

southern part of the Maremma coast in between two small towns, Principina a Mare to the North

and Talamone to the South. It is characterised by a wild hill chain, which leads to sandy beaches

and cliffs and is surrounded by marshes, pine trees, cultivated land and pastures. It is possible to

take part in many walking tours within the Park’s area.

- Diaccia Botrona regional reserve. It covers more than a thousand hectares of land and it is

estimated to be one of the most important wetlands in Italy and Europe. The Reserve has a rare

and remarkable ecosystem which contributes greatly to the preservation of the area’s biodiversity.

In the Reserve it is possible to visit the Casa Ximenes (known as Casa Rossa) multimedia museum

which is an extremely new observation point with sophisticated mobile cameras.

- Fauna reserve of Amiata Mountains. On the basis of the same idea of German wild parks, this

Reserve is an area where it is possible to admire wild animals in an environment as natural as

possible because they are not kept in cages or in fenced areas. The main attraction of the Reserve is

the wolf. Nearby there is the Labbro mountain where you can see the rests of a local community

Lazzaretti in the second half of the ninth century.

- Archaeological Park the City of Tufa. It offers the tourist the opportunity to visit an undamaged

landscape, characterised by volcanic rocks to whom the Park owes its name. From the historical

point of view, the most interesting phase is the Etrurian one: Sovana is the best example of this

phase thanks to its surrounding necropolis with many significant tombs. Other two towns of great

historical and archaeological interest are Pitigliano and Sorano, which hosts the Medieval and

Renaissance Museum.

- Vetulonia is an ancient Etrurian town which provided Rome with its symbols of the bundles of the

lictors and the axe. The period of its greatest glory was between the 7th and the 6thcentury before

Christ. Nearby today’s town, which hosts an important archaeological museum, there is a

necropolis with tombs of great interest.

- Roselle is an Etruscan (VIIth century before Christ), Roman and medieval town which lies just a few

kilometres from Grosseto. The most important ruins which deserve to be mentioned are: the forum

on which the basilica and the Roman workshops overlook, the Roman Domus also called “ Domus
