    Legacy to Landscape is a project involvingthe community which celebrates the area basedon a 1780 s map of Shute estate. This historicmap covers the landscape of the Colyton andShute area.

    Through a programme of wildlife andhistory activities, the project will reveal therich heritage of this hidden landscape,remained virtually unchanged

    for centuries.

    Wonderful wildlife

    recent survey in the mborne alley has

    already revealed rare meadows rich inwildowers. However to date, the wildlife inmost of the project area is little recorded. Theproject wants to discover how much wildlifestill thrives and needs your help. series ofwildlife identication events will provide a great

    opportunity to involve local communities inlearning and helping with identifying plants,birds, insects and mammals on a number ofwildlife surveys. This will be invaluable in helping

    to complete the picture of the wildlife for thewhole project area.

    Practical tasks

    Practical conservation days are also planned

    which will help improve the landscape for wildlife.These days provide another way of discoveringand exploring this amazing landscape and achance to contribute to securing its wildlife forfuture generations to enjoy.

    Unearthing thehidden history

    Little information is available about the historyof this landscape. e are sure it has manyfascinating secrets waiting to be unearthed andrevealed. If you would like to get involved in thisaspect of the project, you are welcome to attend

    the history events we have organised and help

    work with us on investigating old maps and otherhistorical documents, visiting heritage centres,and researching old books on the area. This areacontains a medieval deer park, ancient trees, andwas once covered in orchards. Please help us piece

    together this historic jigsaw puzzle.

    Leisurely discovery strolls

    Discovery Strolls, are also on oer, where

    individuals and groups can get out and discoverthis fascinating hidden history and wildlife right ontheir doorstep, through using easily accessible andleisurely routes. alks last about an hour, are onlevel ground and do not require wellies. Theyprovide a relaxed and leisurely atmosphere, a

    chance to meet new people and have a natter.

    Whats on your doorstepSaturday 6, Sunday 7 andSaturday 20, Sunday 21 AugustTwo linked weekends enabling you to discoverwhat mammals are on your doorstep. ammalexpert drian Bayley will introduce you to the

    trapping and recording techniques used to surveyfor a range of mammals. He will also show youhow to identify tell-tale signs and droppings. Theevenings will either be spent badger watching orhopefully seeing bats in the hand.

    You will be encouraged to take away somesmall mammal traps, a trail camera and arecording bat detector between the two weekendsand to use them and the other techniques youhave learned, to see what you can nd in your ownhome areas. The records of what you nd will be

    added to the county and national mammaldistribution databases.Families are welcome, but the late-night
