Academics to Industry
• Event: Introduction to medicinal chemistry designed for chemistry graduate
students and post docs.
• Concept: The younger chemists perspective on industry careers– Graduate programs in chemistry often do not expose students to industry careers
– Medicinal chemists need to be able to interface with other scientific disciplines
– Younger chemists are able to teach basic concepts in medicinal chemistry to graduate
students with the appropriate level of detail (biology concepts focus on “why” not “how”)
• Presenters: Five younger chemists with diverse experience• Intro to Medicinal Chemistry-The Basics (Erica Campbell)
• Drug Metabolism (Mark Tichenor)
• Barriers to Exposure (Graeme Freestone)
• In Vitro Biology (Ben Pratt)
• The Role of In Vivo Studies in Drug Development (Ryan Clark)
Event Planning
• Venue: The Scripps Research Institute, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego• Funding: 2011 Innovative Projects Grant, YCC budget• Planning committee: Younger Chemists
• Impact Assessment: • Attendance maintained (90-110 students) over five seminars• Very engaged, thoughtful questions• Feedback forms• Asked to return in the future • Some students have attended the seminar series twice
