ENERGY PERFORMANCE FOR LIFE

LEED CREDIT OPPORTUNITIESSpray polyurethane foam offers numerous opportunities which contribute directly or indirectly towards points for the certification of LEED projects.

Direct The use of a Lapolla product type can directly earn LEED points.

Contributing The use of a Lapolla product can contribute towards, or assist a project in earning LEED points.

Supporting The use of a Lapolla product type supports a strategy that will earn a project LEED points.

Note: Typically there are other circumstances that also influence whether or not the LEED points are earned. Specific examples follow:

Heat Island Effect DirectCool RoofNC SSc7.2 (1 point) CS SSc7.2 (1 point)EB SSc7.2 (1 point)Schools SSc7.2 (1 point)

Projects can earn 1 point to reduce the Heat Island Effect using 1 of 3 different approaches. Option 1 is for the use of roofing materials having a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of at least 78 for low-sloped roofs (<2:12) or at least SRI 29 for steep sloped roofs (>2:12), and covering at least 75% of the roof surface. Use of a Spray Polyurethane Foam roofing system such as Lapolla’s FOAM-LOKTM with the Thermo-FlexTM acrylic elastomeric coating complies with this credit. Lapolla Thermo-FlexTM roofing systems have been certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council with SRI numbers of over 90. Option 2 awards 1 point for the installation of a vegetative roof system with 50% coverage. Option 3 allows for a combination of vegetated roof applications and low SRI roof systems. Spray Polyurethane Foam roofing application is also suitable for use in a vegetated roof design scheme.

Insulation DirectExceptional Energy Performance – Performance PathHomes EA1.2 (1-34 points)

Homes pursuing the performance path using the Home Energy Rating Standards (HERS) energy model, award up to 34 points for houses having superior energy efficiency. The use of Spray Polyurethane Foam insulation typically improves the energy efficiency of the home by 30 to 40% over conventional insulation approaches. The gains in energy efficiency are achieved through the installed insulation being more effective, the superior air sealing. Greater gains are achieved when using Spray Polyurethane Foam applied to the underside of the roof and /or foundation walls placing all of the mechanical equipment inside the conditioned spaces.

Insulation ContributingPrescriptive PathHomes EA2 (2 points)

The prerequisite for pursuing the prescriptive pathway for insulation requires that the insulation be installed to meet or exceed the R-value requirements in Chapter 4 of the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). It must be installed to meet the Grade II specification set by the HERS guidelines. EA 2.2 is awarded 2 points if the IECC R-values are exceeded by 5% and the insulation is installed to meet the HERS Grade I guidelines. The application of Spray Polyurethane Foam meets the Grade I installation guidelines and can contribute to the higher R-values to earn this credit.

Air Sealing DirectPrescriptive PathHomes EA3 (2-3 points)

The prerequisite (EA3.1) specifies a maximum air leakage rate (which varies by IECC climate zone) and requires that the air leakage rate be tested and verified by an energy rater utilizing a Blower Door test. EA 3.2 awards either 2 points for “greatly reduced envelope leakage” or 3 points for “minimal envelope leakage”. Because of its effectiveness as an air sealer, whole house applications using Spray Polyurethane Foam can earn these points.

Building Reuse SupportingMaintain Existing Walls, Floors and RoofNC MRc1, (1-3 points)CS MRc1 (1-5 points);Schools MRc1.1 ( 1 – 2 points)

Projects earn points if the minimum percentage of the building structure (including structural floor and roof decking) and envelope (the exterior skin and framing, excluding window assemblies and non-structural roofing material) are reused. The points are awarded dependent upon the percentage of the building components reused within the project. The strategic use of Spray Polyurethane Foam can be used to support the reuse of these building systems. For example, Spray Polyurethane Foam could be used for re-roofing, thereby making it possible to retain the existing roof sheathing.

Indoor Air Package SupportingENERGY STAR with Indoor Air Package – Performance PathHomes EQ1, (13 points)

Projects that complete all the requirements of the US EPA’s ENERGY STAR with Indoor Air Package earn 13 points. The Indoor Air Package emphasizes ventilation and moisture management strategies and includes several measures for which Spray Polyurethane Foam can be utilized, including;

1.3 – Foundation wall damp-proofed or water proofed1.4 – Basements/crawl spaces insulated & conditioned5.5 – Common walls/ceilings (house & garage) air sealed before insulation installed

The use of Spray Polyurethane Foam in basements and sealed crawl space applications as well as the air sealing characteristics support these points.

Optimizing Energy Performance DirectOptimize Energy PerformanceCS EAc1 (1 – 21 points);EB EAc1 (1 – 18 points);Schools EAc1 (1 – 19 points) NC EAc1 (1-19 points)

With the mandatory energy prerequisites met, additional points can be earned by achieving additional improvements in energy efficiency. The baseline building performance is determined using Appendix G of ANSI/ASHRAE/ IESNA Standard 90.1-2007 using a computer simulation model for the whole building project. The greater the level of energy efficiency beyond the baseline building, the greater the points awarded to the project. Spray Polyurethane Foam can contribute to the enhanced energy efficiency due to the higher R-value per inch of insulation and the superior air sealing characteristics of the foam.

Thermal Comfort SupportingThermal Comfort - DesignNC IEQc7.1 (1 point);CS IEQc7 (1 point);Schools IEQc7.1 (1 point)

Buildings designed to meet the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 55-2004, Thermal Comfort Conditions for Human Occupancy, earn 1 point. When used as part of a comprehensive insulation and air sealing approach, Spray Polyurethane Foam can support this credit.
