    He was originally known as Yi I Yi I Yulgok was his pen name (derived from the village of

    his retirement)

    He was born in 26-Dec 1536 in the city of Gangneung

    Heisone of two pillars, along with Yi T'oegye, of theKorean neo-Confucian tradition

    He was an active statesman and educator as well asscholar.

    He did not only compiled the theories of previousConfucian scholars of China and Korea but, moreimportantly, developed his own interpretations of them.

    It is claimed that he composed an essay at the age ofseven and managed to complete his study of the

    Confucian classics He passed the Civil Service literary exam at the very

    young age of thirteen

    At twenty-nine he passed the higher Civil Service exam gaining fullmarks, and then began his government service

    He was given the name of Lord First Candidate of the NineExaminations due to his excellence

    His evident brilliancy and quick study life of the time led to his

    meteoric rise in the bureaucracy. He was put in charge of various offices in both metropolitan and

    provincial government.

    In 1568 Yulgok was sent to China on an ambassadorial mission.

    His official posts included appointments as minister of military affairs,

    minister of public works, and minister of personnel, in which post hedied at the age of forty-nine.

    One of his most notable contribution was his tutorial services hegave to King Snjo (r. 15671608)

    Philosophies

    He got famous with his non-dualistic approach He employed this approach toward interpreting the

    relationship between iand ki, or 'principle' and'material force.

    Yulgok was neither a dualist nor a monist, he rejectedthe division between 'principle' and 'material force' onan ontological level

    He made a clear distinction between these two

    concepts on a phenomenological level. Confucianism + Daoism + Buddhism =Neo-

    Confucianism

    Yulgok is viewed as the opposite of T'oegye

    Conclusion

    Yi I was a wise man full of vision & a prodigy He was claimed as the opposite of T'oegye whose

    focus was only in philosophical concepts and nothingelse

    But Yi I was also concerned about implementation ingovernmental level

    One other quality was his publications whichamounts to thousands
