“No matter how friendly or unfriendly we are, the passing away

of a man you know well saddens you. I cannot say I was a close

friend of Kuan Yew. But still I feel sad at his demise.”– Former

Malaysia Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad

“Mr Lee Kuan Yew had worked together with the pioneering

generation of Chinese leaders in opening the gate for the

friendly cooperation between China and Singapore. His

contributions to the China-Singapore relationship and China’s

reform and opening up will surely be marked by history.”–

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang

“A far-sighted statesman and a lion among leaders, Mr Lee

Kuan Yew's life teaches valuable lessons to everyone. News of

his demise is saddening.” – Indian Prime Minister Narendra

Modi

“Lady Thatcher once said that there was no Prime Minister she

admired more than Mr Lee for ‘the strength of his convictions,

the clarity of his views, the directness of his speech and his

vision of the way ahead’. His place in history is assured, as a

leader and as one of the modern world’s foremost statesmen”

– British Prime Minister David Cameron

Description

Mr Lee Kuan Yew passed away on 23 March 2015. This

special collection brings together the first two volumes of

his memoirs: The Singapore Story and From Third World

to First. These memoirs are the only works that he penned

in his own hand. In The Singapore Story, Lee recounts in intimate detail the

battles against colonialists, communists and communalists

that led to Singapore’s independence.

From Third World to First details the extraordinary efforts

it took for an island city-state in Southeast Asia to survive,

with just a “razor’s edge” to manoeuvre in, as Albert

Winsemius, Singapore’s economic advisor in the 1960s,

put it.

About the author

Lee Kuan Yew formed the People’s Action Party in 1954.

The party won in the 1959 general election and he became

Prime Minister. He stepped down as PM in 1990 and

assumed the post of Senior Minister for 14 years. In 2004,

he became Minister Mentor, a post he relinquished in May

2011. He passed away on 23 March 2015.

Living the Singapore StoryCelebrating our 50 years

1965 – 2015

“I am glad that this book focuses on the people of Singapore. The story of Singapore is made up of the personal stories of Singaporeans from all walks of life and across cultures and religions. The Singapore that we love is established on the hard work and sacrifice of individuals.” — Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, President, Republic of Singapore

“These stories tell how far we have come in the last 50 years. They remind us of the values that got us here. They inspire us to write our own stories with the same grit, resilience and unity. Fifty years from now, may our children and grandchildren be able to rejoice and take pride in what we have built, and tell as good a story of Singapore through the lives of

our generation.” — Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister, Republic of Singapore

Living

the Singapore Story is about Singapore, all 50 years of it as an independent nation. It is not a history book, or about its politics or its national leaders. It is about the people of Singapore and the stories they have to tell, in their own words.

They come from all walks of life – policeman, soldier, doctor, nurse, car salesman, bus driver, teacher, businessman, architect and more – reflecting the diversity that is Singapore. Some are well-known personalities you may recognise but many are ordinary folks.

These are personal stories, of the lives they led, the jobs they did, the challenges they faced, the things they enjoyed doing. Collectively, they tell the story of a people overcoming the odds to build a nation.

As Singapore marks its 50th anniversary, their stories, in this book commissioned by the National Library Board and produced by Straits Times Press, are worth celebrating.

Be At The Table or Be On The MenuA Singapore Memoir

“Jaya stood for continuity of strong, good governance in the interests of the people. He played a key part in shaping events and the world around us. Jaya’s stoutness of heart and hands-on leadership shine through in this recollection of his youth and subsequent Ministerial responsibilities. I hope they inspire younger Singaporeans to create their own destiny and build a better Singapore.” — Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, former Prime Minister, Singapore

“When Jaya spoke, you listened to every word because everything he said was meaningful. So too, with Jaya’s latest book, it is worth reading for the substance it contains. This book is a treasure trove of ideas, thoughts, disputes, political challenges and, more importantly, how to deal with the very difficult situations. Most importantly, how a small country can maximise its international clout with the big countries and the superpowers. This is a must for students of politics anywhere and everywhere.” — Rt. Hon. Sir Donald McKinnon, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth

“This is another excellent book by Prof Jayakumar. It complements his earlier book, Diplomacy, and gives us a more comprehensive view of his remarkable career and contributions to Singapore.” — Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-At-Large, former Singapore Permanent Representative to the UN and former Ambassador to the USA

Be At The Table or Be On The Menu picks up where Prof Jayakumar’s book Diplomacy left off. It gives the broad range of his experience as an academic and Dean in the Law Faculty, as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and as a Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Senior Minister in the Singapore Cabinet, serving alongside Prime Ministers Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Chok Tong and Lee Hsien Loong.

The book also offers rare glimpses of the child and the student that perhaps hinted at his future roles. This part of the book will surprise even those who think they knew him well.

The book’s subtitle “A Singapore Memoir” is apt, because Prof Jayakumar’s story is very much the story of Singapore’s challenges since the early years of independence. Typically, Prof Jayakumar does not simply tell a story; his intention is to show why he and indeed all of us have a part to play in keeping the Singapore Story going.

THE AUTHOR: S Jayakumar was born in Singapore on 12 August 1939. He was educated at Raffles Institution and studied law at the University of Singapore (LLB 1963) and Yale Law School, USA (LLM 1966). He taught law at the Faculty of Law in Singapore where he served as Dean. Later, he became Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He entered politics in 1980 and his ministerial appointments included Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, Law and Labour. He became Deputy Prime Minister in 2004, Coordinating Minister for National Security in 2005 and Senior Minister in 2009 before retiring from politics in May 2011. He is married to Dr Lalitha Rajahram and they have two sons, a daughter and five grandchildren.
