What is deformation?Deformation is the transformation from
an initial to a final geometry by means ofrigid body translation, rigid body rotation, strain (distortion) and/or volume change.
( The change in shape, positionand/or volume of a rock in response toapplied forces - stresses).
Stress = Force per unit areaStress = F/A
Stress is dependant on the area it acts upon
Types of Stress
During deformation a rock may undergo thefollowing changes or transformations:
1. Translation: change in position2. Rotation: change in orientation3. Volume change4. Strain: change in shape
Components ofdeformation
R otation
and
Translation
Strain
Homogenous and Inhomogenous strain
Amount of strain is the same in all parts of thebodyStraight lines remain straightParallel lines remain parallel
The strain in different parts of the body isunequalStraight lines become curvedParallel lines become non- parallel
Hooks law
Plate tectonics
Paleoclimate evidence
Glacialstriations
Ice sheets covered big areas of southernhemisphere ~ 220-300 million years ago
Evidence
1915 Alfred Wegeners Observations
3. Equatorial Climate distribution- a. North America, Southern Europe, NW Africa- b. Deposits of low latitudes
i. Coal ii. Reefs iii. Deserts
4. Fossil Distribution- a. Several species were found to live in these regions that
are now separated by vast ocean
