LG Herndon Jr. Farms, Inc.—Vidalia Onions

The fresh onions used this week are from L. G. Herndon Jr. Farms, Inc. . They are a family owned and operated business and have been in business for over 30

years as growers of Vidalia Sweet Onions, Supersweet Corn, Green leafy vegetables, and most recently Sweet Potatoes. Herndon Farms originated in 1979, under

the inspiration of L. G. “Bo” Herndon Jr. He began his farming career with only one small tractor, a small piece of land, and a few hogs. His wife Gill, worked out-

side of the home for 14 years to take care of the household expenses so the farm’s income could be generated back into the business. Over the course of 30

years, the farming operation has grown. They now produce 500 acres of Vidalia Sweet Onions, 900 acres of sweet corn (white, yellow, and bi-color), 500 acres of

leafy green vegetables (collards, mustard, turnips and kale) and 200 acres of Sweet Potatoes. As a family business, Bo’s nephew Jason, manages the farm, his wife

Gill and daughter Maghen Mitchell work with long time employee Carolyn Wilkes running the day to day office

duties. They strive to maintain a reputation of high- quality and consistency that has come to define the Hern-

don name. They are members of the Vidalia- Montgomery Chamber of Commerce and the Toombs-

Montgomery-Vidalia Onion Growers Association.

Black Gold—Potatoes (Potato Chips)

A multi-generation, family owned organization firmly planted in North Dakota’s

Red River Valley more than 80 years ago, Black Gold Farms has evolved into a

global potato production, sales, and service company and industry leader. They

are the nation’s largest supplier of chip potatoes. The name “Black Gold” was

adopted in 1965 when the family entered the registered Angus cattle business.

“Black” symbolized the fertile, truly deep ebony black soil deposited by Ice Age

glaciers and the Black Angus hide. The “Gold” represented the golden chip potato skin and potential value

of the newly named company. Today the extensive network of operations is made up of 17,000 acres in

production in 11 states around the country.

The red, irrigated sands of Pulaski, Dooly and Wilcox Counties are very productive and serve the important

late May to July 4th shipment window for Black Gold potato production. The location of the Frito Lay plant

in Kathleen, Georgia is a perfect match. Black Gold at Hawkinsville has close to 10 full-time and 30 seasonal

employees.
