How to book
Lunch facilitiesIndoor facilities can be booked in advance. There is also a covered picnic area next to HMS Victory and other outdoor seating areas around the site.
Health and safetyThe National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth and HMS Victory have comprehensive codes of practice and policies covering Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Risk Assessments and First Aid. Copies are available on request.

Accompanying adultsFor health and safety and supervision we require – KS 1 1 free adult per 5 pupils, KS2 1 free adult per 10 pupils.
Prices are correct at time of print and include VAT where applicable. Any changes to published prices will be explained at the time of booking.
It is essential to book all visits in advance. Please contact the Learning Team on 02392 727584 or email [email protected]. Alternatively, call Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s Sales Team on 02392 839766 (option 3).
Preliminary visitsWe strongly advise a preliminary visit in order to familiarise yourself with the site and complete risk assessment paperwork. Preliminary visits are free of charge but school identification (such as a headed paper) is required. Please speak to the Learning Team to arrange this before your visit.
CancellationsIf you need to cancel your booking please do so 21 working days prior to your visit. Unfortunately, you will incur charges if you do not give the required notice.

Getting herePlease plan your journey to ensure you arrive 15 minutes before the start of your workshop or tour. Wherever possible, we will try to accommodate your group if you arrive late. However, it may not always be possible to reschedule a missed session. HMS Victory, HMS M33 and the National Museum of the Royal Navy are located at the far end of the Historic Dockyard. There is a drop-off/pick up point at The Hard and coach facilities provided by Portsmouth City Council can be booked for £7.50.

Welcome to the Learning Voyages brochure from the National Museum of the Royal Navy, HMS M33 and HMS Victory.
Our learning programme offers fun and informative workshops for every key stage on a variety of subjects and interests.
We have activities that bring to life the Royal Navy’s rich history and heritage through our exciting collections and amazing ships.
There are old favourites plus the exciting new blockbuster exhibition 36 Hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle That Won The War with its amazing interactives. Witness the scale of the greatest sea battle and see the daunting view from the bridge of HMS Lion. Discover how a trinket belonging to Lord Nelson found its way to the Battle of Jutland. Reflect on the human cost, meet the men and share their stories.
We are sure that you will find something to help you make the most of your visit.

A Discovery Visit is a teacher-led, self-guided visit to the National Museum of the Royal Navy, HMS Victory or HMS M33. Trails, activity sheets and resources are available to assist with your visit and Discovery Visits can be combined with one or more workshops.
decks of HMS Victory is also accessible with a handling activity and virtual tour available to enhance visits. For HMS M33 there is lift access down to the viewing platform and one of the decks is fully accessible. The mess area, where some of our workshops take place, is not unfortunately accessible to wheelchairs but we can arrange an alternative, fully accessible space if required – just let us know at the time of booking. Many of our workshops involve handling objects and are suitable for pupils with special educational needs. Touch tours and Audio Descriptive tours are also available. Wheelchairs, magnifying glasses and large print text can also be arranged in advance.
Please let us know any special requirements or if you require these resources at the time of booking so that we can help you get the most from your visit.
HMS Victory guided toursDuring the off-peak season guided tours are included in the Discovery Visit but must be booked in advance. Due to high visitor numbers in the peak season a free-flow system operates and these tours are not available. To avoid disappointment please contact us for information on dates for the guided tours.

HMS Victory Loan BoxThe HMS Victory Loan Box contains replica items with accompanying information, activity ideas and worksheets to help pupils explore HMS Victory and life on board for the crew. It is available for collection from the Museum at rate of £30 for two weeks.
The hands-on galleries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, including the HMS – Hear My Story exhibition, span 400 years of history with fascinating objects, audio-visuals and computer interactives. With key themes including exploration, the sailing navy, Nelson, Trafalgar, the two World Wars, science, design and technology, a visit will help develop key skills suitable for a variety of learning styles across the curriculum.

Pirates v the Navy! Target group: KS1
Curriculum links: History
Price: Discovery Visit £4 per pupil + £50 per 1 hour workshop for up to 35 people
How did the Royal Navy deal with famous pirates? Find out in this hands-on activity based session. From handling a real cutlass and flintlock pistol to role play, knot tying and a chance to see a real pirate flag, this session will bring to life how the Navy dealt with piracy.
Nelson’s shipmates Target group: KS1

Who was Nelson? What was it like to sail with Nelson’s Navy? In this activity based session pupils discover and explore the life of this famous man. From creating their own replica Nelson medal to handling real Nelson related memorabilia this session helps bring to life a great naval hero.
A self-guided Nelson Gallery Trail is provided to support this workshop and it is recommended that time to complete it is included in your visit to the National Museum of the Royal Navy.
Percy Parrot’s pirate adventure Target group: Early Years Foundation Stage

Join Percy as he learns how to be a pirate’s parrot and comes face to face with the Royal Navy. Through singing, object handling, sensory exploration and storytelling your class will discover more about life at sea alongside Percy!

Join us for an action packed activity based session in which pupils are ‘trained’ for a life at sea. From calculating how many ships biscuits are needed to feed the crew for a week to object handling and role play, pupils discover what life was really like in Nelson’s Navy.
Portsmouth Dockyard: Then and nowTarget group: KS2

Price: Discovery Visit £4 per pupil + £80 per 1.5 hour workshop for up to 30 people
Pupils become ‘Dockyard Detectives’ investigating clues on a special tour to discover how Portsmouth Dockyard has adapted and grown through time. An excellent introduction to fieldwork investigations and history in evidence, pupils explore how the Dockyard reflects aspects of national history, and the social and technological changes that transformed people’s lives in the area.
Elizabethan exploration and discoveryTarget group: KS2

From the time of the Tudors and the early navy sailors have been taking to the high seas to explore new worlds and cultures. This hands-on investigative session uses ‘Discovery Boxes’ to help pupils learn about the adventures of Drake, Hawkins and Columbus. It is excellent for developing investigative and enquiry skills and culminates in a presentation to the monarch of their discoveries!

New for July 2017 Get Ready for Secondary!Venue: Royal Marines Museum
Target group: Key Stage 2 (year 6) and Key Stage 3 (year 7)
Curriculum links: Secondary school transition
Price: £4 per pupil
Get Ready for Secondary is aimed at Years 6 and 7 as they transition to secondary school. Students take part in a Royal Marines immersive experience aimed at developing confidence and building team working, communication and problem solving skills. Activities include taking part in a drill session, dressing up as a Royal Marine and working together in a Commando Challenge on the assault course.

Life at Sea – Kitbag stories Target group: KS2
Curriculum links: History (World War 1)
Price: Discovery Visit £4 per pupil + £50 per 1 hour workshop for up to 30 people
Using our unique, multimedia HMS M33 kitbags, pupils investigate individual crew members and roles, handle artefacts and carry out investigative activities to learn about life on board. They then reflect on their findings to present an individual case study to the rest of the class.
HMS M33 Science ExplorersTarget group: KS2

Price: Discovery Visit £4 per pupil + £80 per 2 hour workshop for up to 30 people
Explore the science of HMS M33, from the unique design and construction to how the crew communicated at sea. Can science help explain how the Ship’s Cook kept the food fresh and the water drinkable? How did HMS M33 ‘hide’ at sea? Pupils will uncover the answers using simple experiments to test and evaluate their findings.

An action packed experience which combines activities with role-play on the atmospheric Lower Gun Deck. Pupils ‘join’ the Royal Navy at the time of Nelson and experience a day in the life of a sailor.

Tale of Two Ships Target group: KS2

From Trafalgar to World War 1! Inspire your class with this unique opportunity to visit two ships. Pupils will compare and contrast diet and living conditions for the crews as well as investigate how technology changed life on board. They will also learn about children’s roles in times of war.

Travels with Ship’s Pets Target group: KS1

Meet ship’s pets, Squab, Nell and Miss Muggins as they help pupils discover what life was like for the crew of HMS M33 as they sailed across the sea. Pupils will explore life on board through storytelling and role play activities including dressing up and taking part in our Miss Muggins interactive board game.
