Outdoor Education 8:00am – 2:30pm Presenter: Tracey Dobbs, Outdoor Education Director from Stillwood Camp

Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre is pleased to be able to welcome teachers, TTOCs and EAs of all grades from the Chilliwack School District to come and experience our new Outdoor Education Program. Designed to meet the requirements of the BC Curriculum from grade K-12, our program is aimed at providing students with an experiential approach to learning about science and the environment outside of the classroom. Our free workshop provides an opportunity for educators to come and get “hands-on” knowledge and experience of the program by actively partaking in some of the modules we offer. After lunch, participants will also be able to try some of the activities that we have available on site including archery, climbing walls and the Sky High Adventure ropes course. Participants need only to bring closed-toed shoes for activities and gum boots for traipsing around in the forest and at the creek. Lunch and all supplies are provided. Please dress appropriately for all weather conditions. Target Audience: K-12 Teachers, TTOCs and EAs *If you have any dietary restrictions, please call 604-858-6845 and ask to speak to the kitchen. Aided Language Modeling 8:30am – 2:00pm Presenters: Jennifer Buckley and Grietha van Gameren, Student Services/SLP Department

Aided Language Modeling is a training on how to talk with students that are minimally verbal or non-verbal. Jennifer and Grietha will teach you strategies on how to implement students’ goals. This session is a fun, hands-on way to experience what these students encounter every day with access to difference devices (low and high tech). Target Audience: LATs, RTs, and EAs who work with non-verbal or minimally verbal students

“Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn” (see www.cast.org). In this workshop, the presenters will guide participants through a combination of discussions and hands-on activities designed to increase understanding of UDL principles while providing practical resources for use in a range of classroom environments. Prevention & Early Intervention for Youth Sexual Exploitation 8:30am – 3:00pm Presenters: Kev Lescisin and Victor Porter, Children of the Street Society and Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons, Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General

A prevention-based workshop designed for Teachers, Administrators, Education Assistants and service providers. This workshop includes a comprehensive overview of youth sexual exploitation in British Columbia, case studies and trends of youth exploitation, tips on collaboration, working with police and an over view of legal issues surrounding sexual exploitation. Target Audience: Teachers, Administrators and Education Assistants

Basic First Aid for Clerical, Supervision Assistants, Education Assistants, Chef Assistants and any other job description that requires First Aid. Beaded Flowers *Please note this session runs from 8:30am – 11:45am Presenters: Sheryl Picco and Diane Baginski, Strathcona Elementary School

Learn how to make delicate beaded flowers using glass beads. Take your skills back to your students, they will be in awe at their ability to create these beautiful flowers. Working with patterns has never been so fun! In our experience from years of doing this project with students in grades 4-6, the students at first look at you like there's no way they can do this activity and by the end they have such a sense of pride for the flower that they have created! Target Audience: All Staff

First Aid Re-Certification *Please note this session runs from 8:30am – 11:45am Presenters: Primary Care First Aid

This is a re-certification course for staff who have already been certified with the Emergency First Aid (full day course). This course is appropriate for staff who are required to maintain first aid certification as part of their job description. This will not provide full qualification for WorkSafeBC First Aid Attendants who must have Level 1 or Level 2 training. CASUAL STAFF are welcome to attend (cost is $70.00). Annual Glucagon Training/Re-Training *Please note this session runs from 8:45am – 11:45am Presenters: Chilliwack Public Health

Participants will learn when glucagon needs to be given, why it is to be given, and how to administer an intramuscular injection (IM). Hands on practice. Short video. Q&A session. Certification provided. Yearly recertification is expected.

It is recommended that two people per school be trained; both permanent staff, or one temporary staff and one permanent staff. This way if staff moves around, the school still has trained personnel on site. Target Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Education Assistants, Clerical

Learn about possibilities for team time, formative assessment for grouping, record keeping, scheduling, templates, double-dose time, common learning outcomes (across a grade team) and other opportunities for supporting all learners (tier 1 to 3). We hope you will walk away with examples of how to use team time effectively, be inspired by the ideas that are currently in practice around our school district and leave with a renewed perspective on how to incorporate RTI strategies into your classroom. Target Audience: Primary Teachers

Exploring and Befriending Emotions: Anxiety Presenter: Steve Woolf, Turning Towards Essence

When we are gone what will be left behind is the impact that our relationships have had on others. We all do our best to manage our own emotions, but sometimes they can be overwhelming to one degree or another. When this happens, these emotions tend to spill into relationships. In some sense. This is a call for help. Sometime the calls are louder than others. This workshop provides an experiential exploration into the core of a specific emotion to help us become more comfortable with it. Please bring writing and drawing materials (paper and crayons are best, but pencils or pastels, etc permitted). No drawing experience is necessary! Target Audience: All Staff

Presenters: Anastasia Hendry and Christine MacKenzie, Yuklaanas

In this workshop, participants will learn how to incorporate First Nations Art & Culture and the curriculum together. Using First Nations Principles of Learning, participants will learn how to fuse Science with First Nations Visual Arts; exploring, identifying and creating images. This workshop is hands on and participatory. Participants will play a First Nations game, do a storytelling activity and then leave with an art project that can be used immediately in the classroom. The materials and activities used during this workshop are easily accessible to schools with materials on hand. Target Audience: Elementary Teachers and Education Assistants (Middle/Secondary Teachers/EA’s are welcome and will be given ideas for adapting to their grade level)

Staying Gold: Moving Beyond the Novel Study to Foster a Love of Literacy & Literature for Adolescent Readers

Presenters: Lisa Kean, Unsworth Elementary School and Jeanie Calver, Mount Slesse Middle School

Small group strategy instruction, reader’s workshop and guided reading can be incorporated into your middle school or high school English class to teach critical literacy skills while still fostering a deep love of literature. This fun and hands on workshop will include engaging practices to motivate and challenge the adolescent reader as well as practical tips for management and organization. Join Jeanie and Lisa as they share their ‘work in progress’ approach to teaching reading to adolescent learners. Target Audience: Intermediate, Middle and Secondary Teachers

What the Heck is A Rekenrek?

Are you looking for a math tool that does it all? The magnificent & mighty “Math Rack” builds computation skills and teaches students to visualize quantities, compose/decompose numbers to 20, subitize, add, subtract, recognize benchmarks of 5 and 10, balance equations, problems solve and so much more. If you are a fan of Ten Frames, you will love the kinesthetic & visual qualities of these contained manipulatives. This session will highlight connections to math curricular competencies, hands-on use of rekenreks, a resource with black line masters to get you started and a simple make-and-take to build your own rekenrek!

Mindfulness: Possibilities in Education Presenter: Eileen Burkholder, University of the Fraser Valley

This experiential and interactive session explores what mindfulness is, what possibilities it offers and how it is being introduced to adults and young people in education in England and the possibilities for Chilliwack. Find out about an 8-week training called “.b Foundations” which is designed specifically for teachers and adults in the school community who wish to learn the foundations of mindfulness. The training has been trialed and proven effective in over thirty schools across the UK. The objectives of “.b Foundations” is for teachers to be able to use mindfulness to:

Feel happier, calmer and more fulfilled

Get along better with others, including pupils and colleagues

Using myBlueprint to Support the New BC Curriculum

Presenter: Sierra Holtz, myBlueprint Education Planner

myBlueprint.ca is a powerful career and post-secondary planning tool provided by the Toronto District School Board for students. By inputting completed courses into the built-in ‘High School Planner’, students are able to see which College, University, Apprenticeship and Work Sector options they are eligible to pursue, including information about entrance requirements, salary, career outlook and personal suitability. Feedback from our BC partners has allowed us to improve the design and functionality of myBlueprint.ca. This session will cover the connection of myBlueprint to the new BC Curriculum, the mobile-friendly student account and how you can use your own teacher account to assess student learning and progress. The session will end with time to explore your own teacher account and demo student account. Target Audience: Grade 7-12 Teachers, Counsellors and Administrators

Graphic Novels: A Literary SuperHero!

Presenter: Kristi Johnston, Teacher Librarian at Hatzic Middle Secondary School

Making connections and inferences, asking questions, developing deeper understandings, synthesizing the “big ideas” in a graphic novel? Yes! This exciting and compelling literature format has the ability to entice a struggling reader and challenge a gifted reader. In this workshop, Kristi will demonstrate how she uses graphic novels as part of a literature study, and how she uses them to teach narrative and descriptive writing. Target Audience: Grades 4-12, English & Social Studies Teachers, Learning Support Teachers, Teacher Librarians

Coding: A Closer Look at some Simple Techniques to Bring Coding and Computational Thinking into the Classroom

Presenter: Dennis Miller, Fraser Valley Distance Education School

This session will look at simple and easy techniques that teachers can use to bring coding and computation thinking into the classroom. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a personal device as we will explore various programs that will aid teachers to teach the applied design, skills and technologies (ADST) component of the elementary curriculum. In addition, participants will look at how to teach and program the Dash that was included in the district technology kits. Bringing one of your school’s Dash robots will help you explore the programming more efficiently. Target Audience: Teachers, grades 1-7

Thinking Classrooms Part 1 (Introduction) Presenter: Michael Pruner, BC Association of Mathematics Teachers

Are our classrooms populated by students who engaged in mathematics and deep thinking for the duration of class? This session will explore what a thinking classroom looks like and how to create a thinking classroom in mathematics. We will learn about some changes that you can apply right now to shift the culture of your classroom towards one where students are engaged, enthusiastic and independent in their learning. Target Audience: Math Teachers, gr. 6-12

HELP! I have to teach coding?! Presenters: Kris Sward, Unsworth Elementary School and Scott Gregory, Yarrow Elementary School

Integrating the ADST curriculum will help you to teach your students to think computationally. Don’t worry – coding is not required until grade 9, but in this session we will give you the basics of what you need to know to effectively implement the ADST curriculum in your classroom and make use of the district starter kits. This session will highlight 5 locations near Chilliwack where your students can learn in informal spaces. Each presenter will share the key components of their site/program and how it connects to curriculum. Come learn about field trip possibilities as we connect our lessons to place-based education. Teaching in the 21st century is an ethical minefield. Teachers are increasingly asked to include a wide variety of technology in their teaching practices while at the same time they are required to maintain clear professional boundaries. Social media can sometimes blur these professional boundaries. How can teachers create a balance between helping students learn and maintaining professional boundaries? This session will explore these issues as well as other ethical issues facing teachers today. Target Audience: New and early career teachers

At the end of this year, all students will be required to do a self-assessment on core competencies. This session is intended to bring early primary teachers together to explore meaningful ways for students to do that and how to communicate those assessments to parents. Leaps and Bounds is a mathematics intervention resource carefully developed to help teachers diagnose student difficulties and intervene appropriately at the early grades. Based on research on how students learn developmentally, Leaps and Bounds 1/2 gives teachers a tool for individual or small-group remediation. Many of these books are newly published and all have the potential for students to engage in math and provide opportunities to explore in meaningful ways. We hope that this resource will provide ideas for possibilities to pair stories with mathematical investigations that will inspire rich mathematical thinking in your students. Feature Presenter Creating a better Understanding of First Nation History and the Resulting Impacts

Presenter: Dr. Allyson Cushing

Allyson grew up in a small fishing town in rural Nova Scotia. She moved to British Columbia in 1993 with a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology and has since completed her Doctorate in Psychology with a specialty in Trauma. Allyson has worked in the field of Trauma psychology for over two decades. She was introduced to First Nation communities in 1993 when she began working as a Therapist for Xyolhemeylh (The Sto:lo Child and Family Services Program).

Allyson continues to work with First Nation communities throughout British Columbia. She strongly advocates that people in the helping field “walk their own talk.” She has worked with numerous First Nation and Non First Nation Social Service Agencies to promote Self-Care. In addition to her private practice, she is well known for her presentations on Historical Trauma, Trauma, Attachment Disorders and Compassion Fatigue.

In this session, Dr. Allyson Cushing will be discussing the significance of First Nations history and it’s role in attachment and trauma responses. Target Audience: All Staff

Number Talks Presenter: Kathleen Mitchell, Curriculum Math/Science Helping Teacher

In this session, you’ll learn how to implement one of the most effective strategies in improving students’ number sense and fluency. A number talk is a 10-15 minute routine where students solve arithmetic problems mentally and share their strategies. The focus of the number talk is not on the answer, but on all of the possible methods of finding the answer. Students will develop mental math skills and learn to view math as an open subject.
