Learning through case studies of
practitioner research:Creating a
Dissertation Database
Part-time M.Ed students are almost all full-time teachers
& lecturers, many with complex or new professional
roles and time pressures Over 100 merit and
distinction Master’s dissertations stored
in ECLS resource centre available to students and staff
Dissertations use a Practitioner Enquiry research approach - rooted in students’
practice context and issues Some supervisors
with limited experience of
modules, practitioner enquiry
& students’ professional
contexts
Supervisors have partial knowledge of the approaches
and themes pursued by other
dissertation students
Dissertations are case studies of
current educational practices but are an
under-used resource in
research and teaching
The Situation
Learning through case studies of
practitioner research:Creating a
Dissertation Database
Employed an ex-M.Ed student (now a PhD student) to
review the dissertations to
create a database
Database fields negotiated with
project team and in discussion with staff
and students
Database now available (as Excel spreadsheet) to
staff and students
Supervisor development
sessions supported by collaborative reviews of the
database
All students have small group tutorial on use of database during dissertation
introductory sessions
Work in progress:Making the
database more readily accessible
and auditing its use and evaluating its
impact
The Innovation
Learning through case studies of
practitioner research:Creating a
Dissertation Database
Students make more informed use
of dissertation collection
Students use database to help
formulate research proposals
Students contextualise their own practitioner
research in relation to other teachers’
research Offers of
supervision of part-time students have
increased – broadening the
team
Supervisors developing range of
approaches to engaging students with database at
critical points in the research and writing
Reading lists for modules / study groups etc have
been augmented by dissertations as case
studies of practitioner
research
Emerging evidence of impact
