BACKGROUND
As language teachers, we have long been
engage in scientific approaches to foreign
language teaching methodology based on
experimentation and research on linguistic,
psychological, and pedagogical foundations.
RESEARCH QUESTION
What are the learning principles of foreign
language teaching ?
UNDERLYING THEORY
Behaviorism
• Watson (1913) deriving from Pavlov’s findings has named the term behaviorism.
• Skiner’s Verbal behavior (1957) language as a system of verbal operants.
Cognitivism • David Ausubel’s
book Cognitive view (1968) there are two types of learning, rote learning and meaningful learning.
• Clark and Clark, (1977) material learned in a meaningful way is acquired in a non-arbitrary and a non-verbatim fasion.
Humanism • Rogers in Brown
(1980) human being is a whole person who not only has physic and cognition, but more importantly has feeling and emotion.
• Stevick (1987) learning, particularly the learning of language is an emotional experience.

Communicative Lang Teaching
IMPLICATION
A. Behaviorism (Rivers, 1964; Hutchison, 1980).Never translate
New language should always be dealt within the sequent : hear, speak, read and write.
B. Cognitivism (Ausubel, 1968; Chastain, 1976).The learners comprehend the material
They can relate the material to their present knowledge system in a non-arbitrary and non-verbatim manner;
C. Humanism ( Brown (1980:77) He must be genuine and real, putting away the impression of
superiority or omniscience. He must have trust or acceptance from his students as
valuable individuals.
RESEARCH FINDINGS
A. Behaviorism emphasizes a conditioning
process in order learning may take place.
B. Cognitivism requires a meaningful cognitive
process for learning to take place.
C. Humanism focuses on a conductive text for
learning, a non-threatening environment where
learners can freely learn what they need to.
CONCLUSION
Behaviorism, Cognitivism and Humanism
are the learning principles, each of the
theory is relatable to the learning of a
second language and each of them has its
own concept of learning.
