Learning Outcome: Be able to identify workplace hazards, persons who may be affected by such hazards and some of the potential consequences of accidents.
A hazard is any source of potential damage, harm or adverse health effects on something or someone under certain conditions at work. (Being hit by my partner’s hands).Examples: Electricity, hot water, noise, chemicals, etc.
Differences between hazard and risk A risk is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard. (Chance of being hit).The risk of hazards are classified as high, medium or low.The risk assessment process assesses the
potential harm from the hazards
A risk assessment is a careful evaluation of what could cause harm to people within the workplace, so they can take precautions to prevent being hurt.
What is a risk assessment?
What is its main purpose? To make sure that no one gets hurt or becomes ill.
What people may be at risk? Workers/employees, site visitors, general public, etc.

FOLLOW THE HSE’S ‘FIVE STEPS’
STEP 1: Look for the hazards.
STEP 2: Decided who might be harmed and how.
STEP 3: Evaluate the risks and decide whether the existing precautions are adequate or whether more should be done.
STEP 4: Record your findings.
STEP 5: Review your assessment and revise it if necessary

How to assess the risks?
Dangers working next to operating plant (From the Cab, operator has a blind spot to the front right!)
• The labourer is wearing high visibility clothing and is hidden from view of the operator from a seated position in his cab.
Please,- Put your right arm up if you have
understood the whole class.
- Put your left arm up if you have only understood part of the class.
- Just scratch your head if you know ‘Nowt’ (Nothing).
