Learning Journey to India: January 29th to February 13th 2012

    In association with Schumacher College

Links with India is a new organisation offering learning journeys from the UK to India. It hasbeen set up in response to the many exciting and innovative developments taking place inIndia that offer ecologically-aware approaches to local economies, education, food growing, environmental management and alternative technology. We build learning bridges thatenable the sharing of ideas and best practice for a sustainable planet. The groups arelimited to ten people to ensure the best learning experiences.

In each place we will be resident for between two and four days, participating in the life ofeach institution and discussing the processes we observe taking place around us with key people involved.

We are now delighted to be working in association with Schumacher College,Dartington, Devon, to offer the first of a series of Learning Journeys to India with aspecific focus on exploring sustainable living. We will be visiting Bija VidyapeethEarth University - Vandana Shivas learning centre for traditional farming methodsin Dehradun; from there to Jaipur and Barefoot College - a Social Work andResearch Centre based in rural Rajasthan, founded by Bunker and Aruna Roy; andlastly travelling to Udaipur to visit Shikshantar, an organisation founded by Manish

Jain working in the area of innovative education and sustainable living andSewaMandir, an NGO working for more than 40 years with the rural, predominantly tribal population in SouthernRajasthan.

Links with India has been created by experienced educators Andrew and Maggie Alexander. Over the pasttwenty years Andrew and Maggie have taught in schools in the UK: St Christopher School in Letchworth,Brockwood Park School and Bedales School, both in Hampshire, and have led numerous groups of studentsaged 16 to 19 to India. They have an impressive array of contacts amongst the pioneers who are leading arenaissance in Indian civil society. Inspiring individuals such as Vandana Shiva, Bunker Roy and Manish

Jain deserve to be better known in the West. On this journey you will meet them on their home territoryand hear about their work at first hand. Whilst being exposed to a culture vastly different to our own youwill be encouraged to question assumptions and discover the challenges people in India currently face andhow they are meeting them. Learning will take place through informal conversations with the people wemeet and with each other, in reflecting on our experiences, and by applying them to our practices backhome.

The cost for this Journey is 2000 per person and includes all lodging, meals and internal transport, including flight from Dehradun to Jaipur. It also covers Links with Indias costs for bringing you on this

journey. Itdoes not include your international flight, visa, inoculations or insurance (which is vital).

There are only 10 places on this Journey. If you are interested in this opportunity pleasecontact Andrew and Maggie Alexander for further details:
