MATHS - NUMBER: ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

This lesson will be taught during our class Webex session today. Please submit this learning task to Compass for feedback and evaluation by 5pm on Friday.Feedback for this learning task will be provided within the following week. Please refer to the link for instructions on how to upload the learning tasks.https://youtu.be/YWiLyJ0P6CQ

Learning Intention:I can use a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction questions.Success Criteria:I have used my knowledge of place value to complete addition and subtraction questions.

Learning Resources Required:Workbook, number line, worksheets three and four (printed or on a digital device to re-write.Worksheet four is the extension task), and pencils.

Learning Task:● Today we are using our knowledge of place value to solve questions that include a plus or

minus ten.● Students should practise using their knowledge of place value to solve addition and

subtraction questions that involve plus or minus ten.● For example:

○ when we see 10 + 5 = we automatically think 15. Ten and 5 more.○ Consistently remind students that the 1 at the front of each teen number stands

for ‘one set of ten’○ Also in reverse 16 - 10 = 6 we just remove the set of ten, and then what are we left

with?

● Using worksheet three, work through the questions using concrete materials to helpsupport their learning. At school we would use a tower of ten unifix and single floatingblocks, see the picture below.

Extension Task: Now we can solve addition using the ten and some more principle. Can you applyit to larger numbers? Using worksheet four, explain how adults would use this to solve largeraddition questions. For example:23 + 41 =We would add 3 and 1 to get 4, then we would add 2 and 4 to get 6. So the answer is 64.Be very clear that this only works if the total in each column (tens and ones) adds up to less thanten. (Which it does today because we made the work sheet!)

POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS FOR LEARNING

Learning Intention:I can use positive language in a calm voice when I speak.Success Criteria:I have understood the importance of using positive language in a calm voice when I speak and theimpact that it can have.

Learning Resources Required:Plain paper, pencils and an iPhone/tablet/computer.

Learning Task:Today we are going to revise what we learnt earlier in the week and how we have to be carefulwith what we say, because using negative language can be hurtful and leaves a mark on ourheart... So it is important to be kind and use positive language.

1. Watch ‘Words and your heart’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjZ-3MDwDlM

2. Think about what this book has taught you.

3. Discuss these questions with a family member and record your answers on:● What power do words have?● What happens to a person when negative language and hurtful things are said?● Why is it important to use positive language in a calm voice?

Extension Task:Watch ‘Ouch! Moments- when words are used in hurtful ways’:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2aHvO2qMd0

● What strategies could you use to help stand up to a person using negative language (sayingmean or hurtful things) to you or another person?
