Common Core....The Future
3rd Grade English/Language Arts Standards
• Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently.
• Create engaging audio recordings of stories or poems that demonstrate fluid reading at an understandable pace; add visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details.
Example using technology to meet this standard: http://goo.gl/0IdoB
4th Grade Literacy Standard
With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.
How can I help my child?
• Ask Questions: "Did you use your NEOs today?" "What are you doing when you go to the computer lab?"
• Limit Screen Time: Set limits for what your child does online. Maybe you wish to limit/disable the web feature for your child's iPod Touch, iPad, etc.
• Put the "tech" in full view: At 3rd and 4th grade you should always know when your child is online. If there is a computer in their bedroom, it is more difficult to monitor their online activities.
• Create online family time: Skype the cousins, create a family vacation blog, post pictures for family members to see on a photo sharing site -- all are great ways to teach your child online skills and boundaries
• Consult with the school: Your child's teacher is your first/best resources, but there are many staff members who can provide additional information
