OVERVIEW

The Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) Learning From Home program is an approach that

leverages the College’s educational expertise, industry ties and technological infrastructure.

The program has been designed to maximise continuity of learning by reflecting the AITC’s unique five-week education block and a five-week industry block model.

Learning From Home employs a blended learning approach, whereby teachers and industry consultants will use a range of methods to deliver learning.

Learning has been pre-prepared and will be mainly self-directed day-by-day through a structured timetable.

Building upon our young people’s digital fluency, the program will deliver lessons aligned to the College’s core curriculum and industry focus.

We have invested in industry-recognised platforms to enhance our young people’s knowledge and skillsets.

Schoology is the AITC’s Learning Management System and will deliver the Education program.

GO1 + The Careers Department are the College platforms for delivering the Industry program.

TASS (Student Cafe + Parent Lounge) is the portal solution for communications with our community.

The AITC is committed to providing access to campus staff, IT support and student wellbeing support during these extraordinary times.

Timetable

Your personal timetable will be available via Student Café. The timetable is a guide for young people to structure their day and learning will be self-directed. At times, campus staff may organise a live/virtual classroom and they will communicate this to their class ahead of time.

The general timetables for Education block and Industry block are below:

Campus Access

You can choose to stay at home, or you may choose to come to the campus (on campus supervision will not be a normal class environment).

Schoology

Learning content will be accessed via Schoology. All young people have been pre-enrolled into the Learning From Home - AITC course.

Young people are familiar with Schoology and they will already have a login.

If you face difficulties logging into Schoology, please contact [email protected]

No Internet

If there is no or limited access to internet at home, it is preferred that the young person attends campus. Please speak with your Campus Principal if this is a concern.

Attendance

Young people must attend roll call (Daily Launch), which will take place every school day at 8.30AM via Schoology Conferences in the Learning From Home - AITC course.

From the Schoology home page or course list, click on your campus’ roll call event and navigate to the conference for your LFH Tutor Group.

Young people are required to join with microphones. Video is not required.

The LFH Tutor will mark the roll, discuss the plan for the day, and provide any specific notices.

During this time, young people can also raise any issues or concerns in relation to wellbeing or the program.

LFH Tutors will refer young people of concern to the relevant Personal Development Coach or Assistant Principal if there is a wellbeing and/or learning concern.

LFH Tutors will also provide weekly overviews each Monday, followed by a weekly email at the beginning of the week as a ‘check-in’.

Work Experience

There will be no work experience for (at least) the first five weeks of Term 2.

We understand your disappointment but the safety of our young people and our industry consultants (who conduct workplace risk assessments) is our first thought.

There will be a virtual work experience component of the Learning From Home program.

Industry Program

If a young person is on their Industry block, they will need to navigate to the Learning From Home - AITC course in Schoology.

In the Key Links section, click on the Industry Learning From Home image in Schoology.

This will take young people to an external platform called GO1. Within this system, young people will be able to view and complete their learning modules.

The Industry program will develop a young person’s employability skills. These include their attitude, conduct, initiative, communication, motivation, time management, self-management, and teamwork.

Campus Meetings

As part of both the Education and Industry program, young people will also engage with the other key parts of the AITC program such as:

• Wisdom;

• Site Meetings;

• Industry Connect;

• Wellbeing Connect;

• Strength and Fitness; and

• Campus Leadership Connect.

To access these sessions, young people need to navigate to the Learning From Home - AITC course in Schoology, and find the relevant section of the course to engage with some content and complete activities.

Assessment + Task Completion

The College will continue to follow the usual AITC assessment processes and procedures. The Academic Assessment Policy will be available via Student Café and Parent Lounge.

It is very important to keep up to date with all subjects and required assessment/tasks. If a young person requires an extension, please follow the formal process outlined in the Academic Assessment Policy.

Contact will be made with parents via phone for young people who fail to complete tasks, fail to submit draft or assessment pieces, or choose not to respond to campus staff.

Feedback + Communication

It is important to us to actively listen to our community. At the end of each day, young people are required to complete a Daily Feedback form.

In the Key Links section, click on the Daily Feedback image in Schoology.

This form provides young people a chance to give feedback on the different parts of the program.

Young people are required to discuss three things they learnt, two things they enjoyed and ask one question they may have. When answering these questions, you may refer to any aspect of the program, including Campus Meetings.

Young people should check their AITC email daily and campus Facebook page for important information and announcements.

Request for Support

Young people can reach out to campus staff via a Request for Support link.

In the Key Links section, click on the Request for Support image in Schoology.

Support can be requested from a PDC, LFH Tutor, Campus Leadership

or Industry Consultant.

Staff will return a support request within 24 hours (school days only).

Tracking progress

LFH Tutors will view student Schoology participation at a minimum once a week to determine engagement and will check-in regularly to assist young people with the program.

There are also inbuilt checkpoints that Team Leaders will use as formative assessment to track a young person’s progress.

Privacy

The program may require filming of your young person in learning or during one-on-one sessions to enable AITC to provide quality learning, exercise its duty of care, and perform necessary associated administrative activities. Any recordings will be treated as personal information (not made public) and stored on the AITC servers.

PROGRAM GUIDE continued

This is a time of significant change and we are conscious of the need for flexibility, both in the home environment and at the College. There will be ongoing reviews and necessary adjustments to the Learning From Home program based on the needs and experiences of all stakeholders.

As a community, we will endeavour to communicate and learn together to adapt to this new environment.

LEARNING FROM HOME GUIDE FOR PARENTS/CARERS

It is vital that parents/carers are involved in their young person’s learning to create a suitable learning

environment, provide adequate supervision, and ensure open communication.

This is not homeschoooling - it is learning from home. Parents/carers are not expected to deliver lessons.

Learning Environment

One of the first activities is to plan and create a suitable home learning environment. Please consider the following:

• Have a regular place for your child to setup as their Learning From Home space for an extended period of time.

• It is best if it is a public/family space that can be quiet at times, preferably not a bedroom.

• Factors such as lighting, airflow, temperature, noise, WIFI signal, chair and desk height, access to powerpoints for charging, and locations of distractions can all impact productivity.

• Gather resources to assist learning such as a calculator, headphones, scrap paper, notebooks, stationery and/or a keyboard.

• Where possible, monitor your young person’s learning. We encourage you to ask your young person to show you their Schoology home page and talk to you about how they are progressing with set tasks.

AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY TRADE COLLEGE

Page 13: LEARNING FROM HOME - Apprenticeships & Traineeships...Schoology Learning content will be accessed via Schoology. All young people have been pre-enrolled into the Learning From Home

Learning Program

Your young person is used to following daily routines at the College. We have created a program timetable for your young person to follow that includes regular breaks and opportunities to go outside. The program timetable is located on page 6 of this document.

Since your young person will be using their device for Learning From Home, please encourage breaks that are technology free, and involve fresh air and exercise. It is important to support their ongoing health and wellbeing.

Feedback

Parents/carers will have the opportunity to speak directly with the Campus Principal at our live Campus Catch-Up virtual meeting, where you’ll be able to ask questions and raise any concerns you may have in the public forum.

Parental Involvement

We all need to be aware of child protection within an online environment, just as we would on campus.

In the same way that a parent would not enter a classroom when a lesson is in progress, we would ask that parents do not engage in the online sessions that Team Leaders run with their classes.

You can help your young person continue their learning by asking questions such as:

• What are you working on today?

• Do you require any materials or support?

• How can I help you?

• What was one thing that was difficult today? What could you do if this difficulty comes up again? What strategies can we put in place to help?

• What went well today? Why? How can you make sure these successes happen again?

• How are you feeling? Do you need help planning tomorrow to make sure it is successful?

• Is there anything you need to check-in with your Team Leaders about?

It is important to keep communication lines open with your young person to ensure their learning is continuing and that they are coping with the different learning environment.

Regular conversations regarding progress will help your young person to organise themselves and set priorities, which are vital skills for their future work life.

HOME/SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

We continue to do our best to address the academic, as well as the social and emotional needs of your young person. A home/school partnership during

these extraordinary times is critical.

We have developed Learning From Home Expectations for Young People (click the image below to view).

When you login, you’re turning up for work. These expectations are aligned to the College values and illustrate standard industry practice

in a workplace, adapted for learning from home.

It is important for parents/carers and young people to read the expectations, and this handbook, to ensure you understand the role we all have to play in making this program a success.

A FEW FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A full list of FAQs (updated regularly) are available at www.aitc.qld.edu.au/coronavirus/learningfromhome

+ Do I have to stay at home? Can I come to the campus?

All AITC campuses will be open. As per government advice, if you can learn from home then you should remain at home. It is appropriate for a young to attend the campus if:

• parents are essential workers and cannot provide adequate supervision and support (or make other arrangements)

• your home is an unsafe learning environment for you

• you do not have sufficient internet/WIFI to complete the program at home.

At the campus, you will access the same Learning From Home program while staff are physically on campus. All staff and young people on campus must practice social distancing to maintain the safety and wellbeing of everyone on site.

+ How is the Learning From Home (LFH) program different to what we have always done?

The program isn’t that different from what you are used to. The course content for both Education and Industry is the same; however, the delivery method is different. The biggest change to your program is that you will not be on campus completing your program in scheduled classes with face-to-face contact from campus staff.

Instead, an online program has been prepared for you and it will require you to self-direct. If you are completing your Education block, your Team Leaders will provide a 20/22 Day Overview to outline what you need to complete each day and a daily checkpoint that you will need to complete.

LEARNING FROM HOME HANDBOOK | 19

Page 20: LEARNING FROM HOME - Apprenticeships & Traineeships...Schoology Learning content will be accessed via Schoology. All young people have been pre-enrolled into the Learning From Home

Similarly, your Industry Consultant (IC) will provide you with daily learning that will need to be completed to progress through your Industry block.

Your Team Leaders and IC will check in with you regularly to make sure you are staying on track and making adequate progress in your course.

+ Where do I go to access the Education and Industry program?

To access the Education program, you will go to the Schoology courses that you have been using in Term 1 to access content for different subjects.

To access the Industry program, you will need to go to a new Learning from Home – AITC Schoology course and use it to access your online Industry program.

+ What do I need to have at home to be able to learn from home?

To learn from home, you need the following:

• a reliable internet connection

• a reliable device

• logins to Schoology, BKSB and your MS Office account

• notebook, pens and other materials as advised by campus staff

• a suitable place to work without risk of injury

• good lighting and ventilation

+ What do I do if I don’t have internet at home?

If you have no internet at home, it is recommended that you come to the campus to complete your program. If you are concerned about being on-site, please speak with your Campus Principal ASAP.

+ Do I have to wear my uniform?

No, you are not required to wear your uniform while you are learning from home. You are expected to wear appropriate and comfortable clothing that you can learn in. If you are coming into the campus, you MUST wear College uniform.

+ Where do I get my timetable?

A campus timetable has been emailed and you can access your personal timetable via Student Café.

+ How do tutorials in the timetable work?

Your teachers will make themselves available during tutorial times to speak to you or assist you with specific aspects of the Education and Industry program. You can request a tutorial either directly by email or by the Request for Support function on Schoology. Your Team Leader or IC will then advise

+ What do I do if I’m sick for the day?

for absence. Remember that your Learning From Home (LFH) Tutor will mark the roll each morning during a live conference so if you’re not there, you’ll be marked as absent and your Parent/Guardian will be contacted.

+ My timetable says that I have certain subjects at certain times. Does that mean I need to tune into classes at specific times?

No. Your Learning From Home timetable has allocated times for you to focus on certain subjects at certain times. The timetable is a guide as to how to structure your day and be responsible for your own learning. At times, your Team Leaders or ICs will schedule live conferences that they may request you to join. If that’s the case, they will communicate with you to advise you to join.

+ Who are my teachers? Are they the same as last term?

The majority of the Education Team Leaders will remain the same for your subjects; however, any Team Leader from the faculty may answer questions you post into Schoology. All Team Leaders are working together to ensure the continuation of your learning.

+ Who is my Industry Consultant?

The same person as last term. If unsure, please check with your LFH Tutor.

+ What is a Learning From Home Tutor and why do I have one?

They are there to offer guidance and support, helping you to progress through any challenges that learning from home may present. Expect a phone call from your LFH Tutor every second day. It is important that you answer your phone and check-in with your LFH Tutor. If you’re not sure who to contact, the LFH Tutor is a good place to start.

+ Do I still have to do Wisdom site meetings and Strength and Fitness even if I’m learning from home?

Yes, you will be participating in Campus Meetings through the Schoology course. Strength and Fitness tutorials have also been included for you to watch and complete while you’re at home.

+ Do I still go to TAFE?

TAFE is running its pre-employment training online via TAFE CONNECT.

Please speak with your AITC campus or IC for confirmation or clarity regarding TAFE qualifications and units that will be delivered online.

+ If I’m having IT issues when I’m learning from home, what do I do?

Send an email to our IT Support team - [email protected] - and they will get back to you within 24 hours.

+ What about work experience?

There will be no work experience for (at least) the first five weeks of Term 2. We understand your disappointment but the safety of all young people and our staff is always our first thought.

+ Can I continue with my SAT?

Yes, young people may continue working in their SATs during their Industry block, so long as their employer is still operating and comfortable with you continuing. AITC ICs are making regular contact with all SAT employers to keep up to date.

+ How do I get in touch with teachers or other staff?

Every day, you will be required to attend a daily roll call called Daily Launch. You will do this via a conference in Schoology. Your LFH Tutor will run this conference and will go through any daily notices. If you have any matters to discuss, you can raise it here first with your LFH Tutor.

You can also get in touch with campus staff through the following ways:

• Direct email

• Request for Support

• Phone call to the campus

+ Who am I supposed to talk to if I need help with my Education or Industry program?

If you’re stuck and not sure who to go to first, your LFH Tutor is the first person you should contact. They will be able to help you get in touch with the relevant staff member. You can contact your LFH Tutor via email, phone call to the campus or through a Request for Support on Schoology.

If you need help and you know your Team Leader/IC, you can get in touch directly with them via email or a Request for Support on Schoology. When in doubt, contact your LFH Tutor or fill out Request for Support, and someone will get back to you within 24 hours.

+ Who do I talk to if I am having issues with my wellbeing or motivation?

Please connect with your LFH Tutor. They are there to help and will be able to refer you to the correct person. Alternatively, you can fill out a Request for Support and ask for a Professional Development Coach to contact you directly.

Although common questions are listed here, we understand that each young person’s situation

may be different so please reach out to our campus staff for further

clarification.
