CUNY Executive Leadership Program 2014
Target Group: The CUNY Executive Leadership Program was developed for
executive managers who are already regarded as highly effective and who
are being prepared for greater leadership roles. The program will enhance
the leadership, motivation, and relationship building competencies needed
to transition to new roles for leading others at the colleges and the university.
Additional learning outcomes for participants include a strong inner under-
standing of their impact on others, increased awareness of personal leader-
ship styles, new strategies for leading and developing teams, a cohort of ac-
tion learning partners for sustaining learning, development and change, and
a learning action plan for improving personal and organizational productivity.
Selection: Executive Leadership Program participants must be current mem-
bers of the University’s Executive Compensation Program who occupy posi-
tions below the title of Vice President, Provost, or Administrator. This includes
such titles as Assistant/Associate Vice President, Assistant/Associate Provost,
Assistant/Associate Administrator, Dean, Assistant/Associate Dean, or Acting
appointments in these titles. Selected participants must:
Enjoy the commitment and support of their President or Vice Chancellor
(for Central Office candidates);
Be deemed by their President or Vice Chancellor to exhibit professional
readiness to participate in a program requiring significant commitment to
learning and commitment to the college and the university;
Have the time and resources to participate in an intensive and personal
professional development program;
Commit to attendance at all sessions of the program and full participa-
tion in all program activities;
Agree that participation will be in addition to current duties.

Program Overview
Initiated in 2002 and coordinated by the University Office of Human Resources Management, the CUNY
Executive Leadership Program’s principal purpose remains to ensure that the Colleges and the Central
Office will have a continuing resource of talented and motivated leaders capable of assuming posi-
tions at the most senior levels, and to continue to promote an integrated university. The original Pro-
gram, conducted in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006, produced four cohorts of executive leaders, many
who currently serve in executive positions at the Colleges and the Central Office. The Faculty, Staff and
Administration Committee of the Council of Presidents endorsed the Program when it was initially pre-
sented and continues to support its goals and objectives.
The 2014 Program has been redesigned to respond to the challenges faced by today’s higher educa-
tion executive. Executive leadership competencies, strategies, and skill-sets employed successfully in
higher education administration will be presented along with a review of CUNY-specific resources and
systems. The Program will be presented over eight days in April, May, and June. Selected participants
will be expected to attend each session and to participate fully in each day’s activities and additional
program assignments.
Curriculum
The principal design concept for the 2014 Executive Leadership Program is derived from Peter Senge’s
The Fifth Discipline. Executive leadership competencies and high-level knowledge of CUNY resources
and systems will be explored in terms of the four program categories of personal mastery, interpersonal
mastery, team mastery, and systems mastery. Specific executive competencies include leadership,
communication, change management and innovation, diversity and inclusion, cultural transformation,
conflict management, CUNY executive challenges, CUNY systems, ethics in public service, strategic
planning, and time management.
