Welcome to Muenster!

Muenster is one of the most popular university towns in Germany. Located in the west of the country, it is well known for its historic city center, a charming, yet dynamic atmosphere, and lots of green. Muenster was the site of the peace contract in 1648 which ended the confessional wars, and has since gained a reputation as one of the most liveable cities – worldwide, as some people say.

Enjoy the stimulating academic environment of Germany’s fourth-largest university, use libraries that are among the best equipped ones nationwide. Experience Muenster by bike, meet students and scholars from Germany and abroad, or enjoy one of the many small cafés and bars. Excellent public transport allows for exciting weekend trips, including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Bremen or Amsterdam.

Classics in Muenster

The University of Muenster has a long tradition and an outstanding reputation in the humanities, offering a wide range of subjects, cross-disciplinary research and teaching. The study of the Ancient World and its reception is especially vivid and multifold: You will find departments for the study of Roman and Greek Languages and Literature, Ancient History, Epigraphy, Classical and Christian Archeology, Patristics, Byzantine Studies, Medieval and Neo-Latin, as well as many affiliated disciplines including Egyptian and Near Eastern or Reception Studies. Furthermore, highly successful centers of research, such as the Center for the Study of the History and Culture of the Eastern Mediterranean, and the ‘Exzellenzcluster’ for Research in Religion and Politics in Modern and Premodern Cultures, attract a large number of scholars from abroad and make for an international, vibrant academic community.

The Program

The program ‘Classics and German’ is unique in combining German language courses with the occasion to learn about the ‘German way’ of doing Classics. It is especially designed for Graduates, Post-Docs, and Junior Staff in the Classics.

The German language courses take place in the mornings. They are taught on all levels, in small groups led by skilled teachers, with a special emphasis on the needs of future academics.

In the afternoons, participants are invited to become part of the Classics community: meet fellow students and colleagues, be a guest at regular seminars and lecture classes, and join discussion groups. We will organize events and venues to get to know the faculty and students in your fields of interest. Choose from various lectures and guest talks and see what is going on in German academics. If wanted, we will be happy to facilitate access by introductory sessions or written material in order to minimize language barriers.
