What can you use percent for?

Percent helps us to be able to talk about things and compare them!

For Example:

What do you think kids like better, peanut butter and jelly or brussel sprouts?

If we read that about 1,900,643 out of 2,245,635 students liked to eat peanut butter and jelly, but only 12,635 out of 95,200 liked to eat brussel sprouts, we might say, “oh, let me think

about that…” or “What?!”

However, if we read that about 85% of students like peanut butter and jelly, but only about 13% like brussel sprouts, we would probably say – “well, yeah…duh!...of course!”

Percent can make big ratios easier to understand and talk about.

The trick is figuring out which numbers are the part, the whole and the percentage.

If you’re trying to find 75% of 80, it’s pretty easy to tell that 75 is the percent and 80 is the whole number.

How does this help?

You can use the same equation for calculating percentages no matter what you are trying to find! Percent x whole =

Think about it. 75% is part of 100% and the question asks, 75% of 80 is ? So the number matched with 75% is the part and the percent matched with 80 is the 100%. 80 must be the whole.

Think about it. 75% is more than half, right? Is 24 more than half of 80?

75 is ¾ right? What is ¾ of 80? What is ¼ of 80? Divide 80 by 4. Multiply that number by 3.

Let’s look at another kind of problem!

Remember – Percent x whole = part

28 ÷ .4 = ?

.4 × 28 = ? .4 × ? = 28

.4 x 28 is the expression for finding the part. In this case 28 is the part. 28 is 40% of what number? We are trying to find the whole!

Both the equation 28 ÷ .4 = ?

and the equation

.4 x ? = 28 are correct!

Percent x whole = part

Part ÷ whole = percent

Part ÷ percent = whole

Now you just have to figure out which part is the part, which is the percent and which is the whole! All it takes is a little practice and you’ll be a percentage whiz!
