Leaps and Boundaries Plate Boundary Types The following are the result of plate tectonic movement along boundaries. What do you think specifically causes each to form? Do Now How does the kinetic energy of Earths plates affect the geography of the planet? Essential Question You will be able to: Identify the 3 main types of plate boundaries. Describe features associated with each boundary type. Compare and contrast the 3 main types of plate boundaries. Prepare for the Activity Work in groups of four. Discussion Notes There are three primary types of plate boundaries: Convergent, Divergent, and Transform. Convergent boundaries occur when two plates collide. Typically one will push under the other, called subduction. Convergent boundaries are responsible for volcanoes, mountains, and trenches. Discussion Notes (cont.) Divergent boundaries form when two plates pull away from each other. Magma rises due to density and makes new crust. This can form shield volcanoes and expand landmasses when on continents (Iceland). Discussion Notes (cont.) Transform boundaries form when two plates rub against each other horizontally. A famous one is the San Andreas Fault. They cause shallow earthquakes and zigzag patterns on land. A Visual Transform Divergent Convergent Wrap Up How does the kinetic energy of Earths plates affect the geography of the planet? The three types of boundaries are divergent, convergent, and transform. Convergent and Divergent boundaries are associated with volcanos. Convergent boundaries on land form mountains like the Himalayas. Transform boundaries cause earthquakes and zigzag patterns.
