Our Research approach
Method • We assembled a long list of 209 companies through desk-top
reasearch:
• Structured keyword searches in search engines such as
Google, Linkedin, etc.
• Industry Associations, Rankings and Publications
• We conducted structured interviews with selected subject
matter experts, consultants and professionals to augment
our findings with direct market insights
• For this summary, the following lists have been compiled
based on the above:
• 10 largest firms
• 10 most mentioned firms from the interviews
• Additionally, short profiles of the most mentioned firms
have been compiled for this summary
• A Special for Lean in Health Care has been compiled
detailing top 5 mentioned firms from interviews, including
short profiles Comments • Our interviewee sample size (26) does not allow for
statistically significant conclusions. All results presented here
should be interpreted as anecdotal evidence.
• Given the highly fragmented nature of the market, most
interview participants only know a handful of firms, and the
«known sample» differs strongly between participants
• For this reason, conducting a statistically relevant survey
would have been beyond the scope of the current project

Qualitative Information • German Hospital leaders appear to be reluctant to take next
big steps in LEAN transformation after a wave of projects in the
last few years predominantly led by Porsche Consulting
• US Clinics examples are often shunned in Germany because
of the negative reputation of the US Health Care System as
a whole
• German private clinics appear to be more willing to undergo
change than public institutions
• In Switzerland, several interviewees have diagnosed a LEAN
Hospital boom, with large University Hospitals taking the lead
in full Transformation and smaller hospitals taking their first
steps
• Swiss Clinics appear to be more open to learn from US
