pH and ORP SystemsReliable Even in Ultra Pure Water Applications
Functional definitionpH can be described as a measure-ment of the relative acidity of a solu-tion. Oxidation reduction potential(ORP) as measured with an ORP elec-trode, provides an indication of theoxidative state of the solution. It isimportant to measure, and often tocontrol the pH and/or ORP of a solutionfor several reasons:– To produce products with consistentwell defined properties
– To efficiently produce products atoptimal cost
– To avoid health risks– To protect our environment– To prevent physical/chemicaldamage to materials
– To meet regulatory requirements– To expand scientific knowledge
The accurate measurement of pH/ORPis critical in most industries. Eachapplication has unique physicalrequirements of chemical, temperature, and pressure resistance and possiblyhygienic design. Another factor is whatis to be done with the measurement:
monitoring only, data logging orprocess control.
pH electrode selectionIt is important to understand the detailsof the application before selecting a pHelectrode. The table gives an initialglance at the various electrodes avail-able and typical applications. Selectionof a pH electrode requires a thoroughknowledge of the process. Once therequirements are known, comparison ofthe electrode specifications detailed inthis catalog will identify the appropriatesensor.

IntroductionHigh Process Efficiency Under Any Condition
METTLER TOLEDO US and Canada
METTLER TOLEDO provides sensors to measure dissolved oxygen (DO) in demanding lowppb-level applications.
Ozone sanitization of pharmaceuticalwater systemsComplete sanitization is achieved bycontrolling ozonation downstream ofthe storage tank. A second ozonemeasurement guarantees the removalof all ozone downstream of UVdestruction.
Ozone sanitization of semiconductorultrapure waterOzone sanitization can be controlled bymonitoring the ozone concentrationdownstream of the ozonator and UPWstorage tank. To be sure all ozone hasbeen decomposed after UV lights a sec-ond ozone measurement can confirm azero level.
Measuring principlesOzone passes through a gas-perme-able reinforced membrane of excep-tional durability producing an electro-chemical reaction and current flow indirect proportion. Behind the membraneis the platinum cathode where ozonereacts to produce the measurement sig-nal. The electrochemical reaction iscompleted at the silver anode. Full tem-perature compensation accounts foreffects of both membrane permeabilityand solubility of ozone in water.
Important features of an ozone sensor– Rapid, accurate response– Positive zero detection– Low maintenance with drop-inmodular membrane
Ozone sanitation of bottled waterContinuous measurement and controlto proper ozone levels of bottled wateris a key quality practice that promotesconsistent good taste and long shelflife.
Ozone sanitization of beveragesystemsOzonated water is used in place ofchemicals for CIP operations whenchanging between flavors. Ozone pro-vides cleaning and disinfection withoutrisk of objectionable residuals orbyproducts.
THORNTON Ozone Measurement SystemsProvide Accurate Response and Excellent Sensitivity
THORNTON’s dissolved ozone measurement systems show rapid and accurateresponse to ozone concentrations. The excellent sensitivity gives positivedetection of zero ozone after destruction by UV light.

Three commonly used techniquesElectrolytic conductivity is a measure ofthe total ionic content of a solution. There are three main methodologies tomeasure conductivity:– 2-electrode sensors are for measure-ments in high purity water andrelatively low conductivity ranges
– 4-electrode sensors are for mid tohigh ranges. They are more resistantto fouling than two-electrode designs
– Inductive sensors cover mid to veryhigh conductivity ranges, and areparticularly resistant to fouling.
METTLER TOLEDO offers all threemethodologies.
2-electrode sensor design (Fig.1)An AC voltage is applied across the 2electrodes, and the resistance betweenthem is measured. The built-intemperature sensor provides fast accu-rate measurement. The cell geometryand the high solution resistance allowfor very accurate and precise conduc-tivity determination.
Sensors are used for:water conditioning and purificationstages where they are capable ofdetecting minute levels of impurities inultrapure water.
4-electrode sensor design (Fig.2)An AC voltage is applied across the2 outside electrodes. The principle is tomeasure the voltage drop across the 2inner electrodes. Therewith polarizationerrors are eliminated. Since this tech-nique measures potential drop themeasurement remains accurate. It per-mits easier in-line cleaning and it canbe installed in smaller piping thaninductive sensors.
Sensors are used for: concentrationmeasurement of acids, alkalis, andsalt process streams.
UniCond® Conductivity/Restivity Sen-sors with ISM (Fig.3)The UniCond® conductivity/resistivitysensor advancement integrates themeasuring circuit and the physicalsensor into a single unit. UniCond®
conductivity/resistivity sensors provideexceptionally wide measurementranges due to their advanced built-inmeasuring circuit. The on-board meas-uring circuit eliminates interferencefrom lead wire resistance and capaci-tance. Only digital signals go back tothe transmitter. The UniCond® designmitigates the effects of polarizationenabling the upper range of theconductivity sensor to be greatlyexpanded. UniCond® sensors providethe ability to accurately measure fromultrapure water to brackish water (up to50,000 µS/cm) with a single inte-grated sensor greatly simplifying watertreatment instrumentation.

IntroductionReal-time Release for Your USP Water
METTLER TOLEDO US and Canada
Introduction Smart SensorTechnologyThe 5000TOCi Sensor uses IntelligentSensor Management technology inter-facing with the M800 MultiparameterAnalyzer / Transmitter. This technologyallows the M800 to recognize the con-figuration and sensor parameters whenconnected. The M800 instrument willallow up to two or four 5000TOCiSensors to be connected to any of thefour input channels. Any remainingchannels are available for use with allother ISM Sensors. The M800 alsoprovides two pulse input channels foradditional flow measurements.
The Sensor connects directly to theM800 instrument using standard patchcables. The 5000TOCi Sensoris designed to meet the requirementsof today's industrial facilities with itsUL rating. Combined with the M800instrument it provides the most versatileand flexible TOC measurementplatform available.
Measurement technology UV Oxida-tion/Differential ConductivityThe 5000TOCi Sensor uses provenultraviolet oxidation with differentialconductivity (see Figure 1) as themethod to effectively determine TOC
concentrations. High performancedigital conductivity sensors providecontinuous conductivity measurementbefore and after sample oxidation. Thisis accomplished using a continuousflow-through spiral quartz tube designthat allows the sample to flow continu-ously through the sensor. This designmaximizes exposure to the 185nanometer UV light, while minimizingmeasurement response time andproviding complete oxidation. Thissimple and effective design requires noreagents or chemicals and has nomoving mechanical components.
The formation of hydroxyl radicals inthe water during UV exposure producesa mechanism through which bonds innon-ionic organic compounds are bro-ken and oxidization occurs to formproducts such as carbon dioxide and

water. The carbon dioxide dissolves inthe water and forms carbonic acidwhich dissociates into ionic-conductivespecies. This change in conductivity isassociated with TOC (see Figure 2).
USP/EP and SSTIn the Pharmaceutical Water productionprocess, System Suitability Testing(SST) is an essential activity to verifythe performance of a Total OrganicCarbon monitoring system and toensure its adequacy for TOC analysis.
USP and EP RequirementsIn the requirements for TOC measure-ment, the United States Pharmacopoeiaand European Pharmacopoeia haveestablished specific Total OrganicCarbon (TOC) tests as described in USPGeneral Chapter <643> and EPChapter 2.2.44, respectively.

How is TOC System Suitability Veri-fied?Once the measurements of sucrose,1,4-benzoquinone and reagent waterare complete, a simple calculation isapplied:1. Calculate the limit response by
subtracting the Reagent Water (RW)TOC response from the response ofthe Sucrose (RS) Standard Solution. This is RS–RW.
2. Calculate the corrected SystemSuitability Solution response bysubtracting the Reagent Water TOCresponse from the 1,4-benzoquinoneTOC response. This is RSS–RW.
3. Fill in the responses to the followingformula:
These chapters provide:– Guidance on the methodology forTOC testing
– Criteria for establishing instrumentacceptance
– TOC limits for the sample to betested
Challenges of System SuitabilityTestingBecause organic carbon appears invarious forms in nature and subse-quently in water treatment processes,a wide variety of oxidation states andchemical forms are found in these sys-tems. The goal of System SuitabilityTesting is to challenge the TOC meas-urement technique by verifying that twochemicals of very different chemicalproperties respond equally. In thiscase, the two chemicals specified inthe pharmacopoeial chapters aresucrose and 1,4-benzoquinone.Because of their unique and differentchemical structure, sucrose and1,4-benzoquinone challenge the bond-breaking and oxidation capability ofthe TOC measurement technology.
These solutions are commonly referredto as easy to oxidize and hard to oxi-dize chemicals, respectively. In addi-tion to sucrose and 1,4-benzoquinone,reagent water (the water used to man-ufacture the sucrose and 1,4-benzo-quinone solutions) is analyzed duringthe suitability testing.

WaterQuality
THORNTON Pure LightSimple Water Quality Indication
656 Pure Light™Water Quality Indicator with TimerNEW!
The Pure Light™ is a go/no-go indicator for the quality of pure water from purificationsystems including service deionization, reverse osmosis, and distillation. Under nor-mal conditions, the green light is illuminated, indicating that the water is in theacceptable purity range. When the purity falls below the user selected set point, theindicator light switches from green to red. The user can activate the time function toalso alarm based on time and prevent organic or biological fouling of the system. This easy to interpret, go/no-go, signal alerts the user to take appropriate action.
Features/Benefits
- Low voltage operation - the indicator operates on 6 VAC.
- Five ranges, user-selectable - jumper permits the user to select the acceptable puritylevel threshold to meet the application. Threshold limit can be re-set as needed toone of the following five settings.
Restivity Conductivity50 kΩ-cm 20 µS/cm
200 kΩ-cm 5 µS/cm
500 kΩ-cm 2 µS/cm
1 MΩ-cm 1 µS/cm
2 MΩ-cm 0.05 µS/cm
- BioFouling Timer - includes selectable timer that indicates the elapse of 90 or 180days since the last servicing.
- Dual Mounting Threads - supplied with two mounting threads of 1/2” NPT and9/16” -12 for convience and reduced inventory.
- Multiple lights, one transformer - up to three Pure Lights can be operated from one120V transformer which has screw terminals. Only one electrical outlet is requiredto monitor multiple points. Each light for 120V is supplied with a 10 ft (3 m)connecting wire.
- Red & green LED’s - for reliability, two bright Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s) are usedto indicate above or below threshold status, representing the need for regenerationor replacement of ion exchange resin.

System Suitability TestingSince the THORNTON 5000TOCe sensor provides continuous monitoring capability, the System Suitability Test can beperformed far faster than other TOC measurement technologies which rely on lengthy batch measurement or labora-tory analysis. In addition, during the System Suitability Test, the operation of the instrument is identical to normaloperating conditions with no extra oxidation cycle times, no chemicals and no alteration of existing protocolsrequired. The solutions are easily introduced into the system, and results are available in minutes. The System Suit-ability Test Kit from THORNTON provides the equipment needed to perform a system suitability test on the 5000TOCeSensor.

Mettler-Toledo Thornton housings provide a fixed NPT or solvent weld processconnection. For easy access to the electrode for cleaning, calibration or replace-ment, they have internal o-ring seals with hand-tightened mounting nut. Thecompact METTLER TOLEDO electrode design includes measuring, reference andfast-responding temperature compensator functions so only a single processconnection is ever needed.Housings should be mounted to orient the tip of the electrode at least 15° belowhorizontal to assure reliable contact of internal electrolyte with the measuringmembrane. They should not be mounted horizontally or upside-down.
