About The NSMC

Established by the British Government and the National Consumer Council in 2006, we are a centre of excellence for social marketing and behaviour change.

Our mission: to maximise the effectiveness of behaviour change programmes.

We do this for a growing list of public sector organisations through a broad range of strategic analysis, advice, support and training across all levels of the social marketing process.

World leaders in our field, we draw on expertise from the UK, USA, Europe, Asia and the Pacific and adapt it to meet the needs of UK and international audiences.

“The NSMC plays a crucial role in raising the standard of social marketing in public health, in the UK and abroad.”

Dr Fiona Adshead, Former Director of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion at WHO and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England

Tailored training Exploiting our expertise to develop yours, we can build the skills of your people through bespoke workshops – designed purely around your strategic objectives. Much more than ‘how to’ sessions, our training events can help your staff and stakeholders agree on practical steps to address complex behavioural challenges. We’ve trained over 3,000 NHS staff – among many others. Most critically, 71 per cent of them said they would change how they worked on future behaviour change campaigns. We’ve also developed a suite of ‘off-the-shelf’ courses on everything from understanding your audience to evaluating campaigns and master classes.

Our years of policy and strategy develop-ment and of building partnerships at the highest level have given us unrivalled skill and know-how across a vast range of scenarios:

In the UK, we’ve worked with the public sector, advising on numerous programmes to support healthy behaviours, protect the environment and enhance public safety and wellbeing. These include campaigns to help people quit smoking, exercise more regularly, and insulate their homes

We have created bespoke training for hundreds of organisations worldwide, including: the UK’s Change4Life programme; the Department for International Development; the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs; Sport England; the World Health Organisation; the World Meteorological Organisation; the Qatar National Health Authority; the Slovenia Institute for Public Health; and the Hong Kong Department of Health

In South East Europe, we helped the British Council design a stakeholder engagement strategy for their social entrepreneur- ship programme

We’re using our extensive behaviour change expertise to develop a value for money tool with top health economists and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). It will help organisations to develop more cost-effective campaigns and interventions

We help organisations use research tools to understand their customers and develop more effective behaviour change programmes

“The NSMC has helped us to think about the role of social marketing in understanding and responding to the needs of our different target audiences.”

Sarah Hendry, Director in Defra’s Food and Farming Group

Proven tools and resourcesTo embed behaviour change expertise in your organisation, you need the right tools. Responding directly to your needs, we can tailor a set of flexible, intuitive resources that will empower your colleagues and build in-house capabilities. Our work improving public and private sector ability to plan, procure and deliver behaviour change interventions means we draw on a wealth of resource development experience.

Our online Planning guide and toolbox has been a boon for practitioners the world over. We subsequently produced tailored versions for Department of Health’s national cancer team, NHS Tayside and the British Council. We’re also adapting a quality improvement framework to allow organisations to build and learn from their many successes and challenges. Whatever the behaviour change, we have a tool that can help.
