This year, our annual report is a celebration of our mission statement. We live our mission every day. It guides our work, it is our reason for being. We have put together some compelling examples for you to read. stories that demonstrate our vision of a better quality of life for the residents of Broward County. stories that reflect our mission to provide leadership on community solutions and foster philanthropy that connects people who care with causes that matter.

leadership on Community solutions - thoughtful leadership is critical for a community. This year we: • Continued work on behalf of children transitioning out of the foster care system, bringing our eight year total to $1.5 million granted to programs that provide solutions for these once forgotten youth. • Were selected as one of 30 Community Foundations nationally to develop strategies to harness the energy of retiring baby boomers for the public good.

Foster Philanthropy - philanthropy and its effects on Broward are present in every conversation that we have. This year we: • received $9 million in new gifts. • Were honored by eight future estate gifts that will serve our community in perpetuity.

People who Care - we are fortunate to be surrounded by people who care. This year we: • added 22 new Funds to our growing family of 350 that address all aspects of the Broward community. • Benefited from more than 1000 hours of expertise and advice that were volunteered by community leaders to help us further our mission.

Causes that Matter - a myriad of causes, all being addressed through grants and programs, make Broward a better place for all of us. This year we: • awarded 555 grants totaling $5 million to the community. • addressed aging, aIDs, academics, animals, alzheimer’s, autism, and advocacy – all issues – and just the “as” through grants to more than 200 organizations.

We wish to express our great appreciation to you, the Broward community. It is your generosity and your desire to live in a vibrant place that enables us to fulfill our mission. The Community Foundation of Broward is proud to be an integral part of our community. For Good. For Ever.

“Angelina” was placed in foster care at age four. She lived with five different families in ten years, dropped out of school twice and finally ended up at The Haven, a residential, support and mentoring program for foster kids. Today, Angelina is a junior at the University of North Florida.

22

How many times did you call home when you were 18? Car out of gas. Overdrawn bank account.

girlfriend broke up with you. you called home because you knew that there

was someone on the other end who cared. someone you could count on. now,

imagine not having had that.

Hundreds of children transition out of the foster care

system in Broward each year as they turn 18. If you look a bit closer you find

that 46% of them did not have a high school diploma, 25% of them had been

homeless and 42% of them were parents themselves. eighteen year old children

were without parents and without a net. They needed a voice.

They needed an advocate.

We first learned this in 1999. We immediately went to work. We met with

these young people, we identified the gaps. We needed to understand what their future would be if we did not get involved. We convened

the community. We brought together other funders and nonprofits, civic groups

and government agencies. Together, we created a plan.

This is not an issue with easy or inexpensive answers. In the eight years that we

have been working towards solutions, more than 10,000 hours and $1.5

million has been dedicated to helping these young people. and we’re all still

working on it. Today though, these children do have resources, they do

have a net and they do have a voice.

Connect

as a long-time, trusted attorney,

rosemary lindsey cares about her clients as if they were extended family.

“They are fascinating and generous people,” says rosemary.

she values the time she spends talking with them about estate planning and philanthropy. she knows that these conversations

are important to her clients and deserve her time and attention. “The

Community Foundation of Broward is often a perfect solution

to my client’s philanthropic goals. I cannot be an expert on all of the

nonprofits in the community. I look to the Foundation as a resource

for me and for my clients. They are a vital part of these conversations

and can connect my clients with the philanthropic vehicle that is right for

them.” rosemary adds “I trust the Community Foundation because they

are professionals, experts in the community and connect

philanthropists with causes that matter every day.”

Charitable FundsThe range of Fund types offered by the Community Foundation of Broward allows you to customize your giving to

fulfill your personal charitable goals. The Foundation provides many philanthropic solutions for the causes that matter the most to you.

24

Donor Advised Funds offer the most active, involved grantmaking. They allow you to recommend grants to support charitable groups of your choice. They are a flexible, personalized way to support nonprofits in Broward, elsewhere in the u.s., or anywhere in the world. The Community Foundation measures the results, reports back to you and assures compliance.

Susan and Jack Loving established a Donor Advised Fund to give them philanthropic flexibility, without any of the administrative work. The Susan and Jack Loving Fund recently made a grant to the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, which helps women suffering from substance abuse. The Lovings also enjoy learning about other programs that make an impact, and trust the Community Foundation to provide them with philanthropic opportunities that make a difference.

Designated Funds are permanently endowed Funds that enable you to support your favorite nonprofits forever. The organizations that you choose, receive annual gifts in your Fund’s name.

Longtime residents, Hugh and Helen Isley were active in the corporate, social and civic fabric of Broward County. When both passed away within a month of each other, their children were looking for a way to honor their memory in perpetuity. They created the Helen B. and Hugh G. Isley, Jr. Fund to provide ongoing support to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County and Kids in Distress.

This Designated Fund provides a permanent legacy of their parents that supports two organizations that were important to them, forever.

Field of Interest Funds are a way to provide support to organizations that work on issues that you specify. Once you determine the issue you want to support, the Community Foundation staff identifies grant recipients and makes grants from your Fund to nonprofits committed to your cause.

Robert and Anne Powell love children. The Powell’s Fund supports compelling programs that fulfill their wish to provide services to children, and it recently supported scholarships to the Florida Youth Orchestra.

The Robert O. Powell Family Fund is a Field of Interest Fund. The Powells give the Community Foundation of Broward the latitude to identify great children’s programs.

Unrestricted Funds allow you to address both the current and future needs of Broward County. as the community changes, so do our grants. as an unrestricted Fundholder you understand that what is important may be different tomorrow than it is today. By partnering with the Community Foundation, grants will be awarded in your name to nonprofits that address timely solutions, today and tomorrow.

Robert Elmore understands that today’s solutions may be very different from tomorrow’s. This year his Fund supported Big Brothers and Sisters so that foster youth entering adulthood will have mentors. Next year, his grants could be directed to support a solution yet to be discovered. Bob gives the Community Foundation of Broward the latitude to grant from his Fund so that his help is timely and responsive.

The Robert Elmore Fund is an Unrestricted Fund, today and tomorrow, it will continue to provide relevant solutions.

Agency Endowment Funds empower nonprofits to honor bequests and create a permanent revenue stream for the organization. They also allow nonprofits - of all sizes - to benefit from the Community Foundation’s large investment pool and world class financial management.

The Museum of Discovery and Science wanted to build a financial base for its growing operations. With a dynamic board and broad donor base, it created a Fund in 1996 to build a permanent income stream to support its mission.

The Museum of Discovery and Science Fund is an Agency Endowment Fund. It enables the Museum to benefit from the large Community Foundation pooled asset base and expert financial management. It is a vehicle to preserve legacy gifts to the Museum, and assures that its exhibits and programs will always have a source of support.

The Power of EndowmentEndowed Funds are designed to live long into the future. a $2 million endowed Fund that was created in 1984, today is worth more than $3.5 million and has distributed more than $3 million in gifts to the Broward community. Over time, endowed Funds distribute much more than the original gift, preserving a family name and tradition of philanthropy.

Harriet and Jack Kaye cared deeply

about the nation’s founding principles of democracy and freedom. To

inspire the next generation, they annually sent high

school students to the “spirit of america” conference at historic valley

Forge to learn first hand the intent of our Founding Fathers. Harriet wanted

to ensure that after she was gone, future generations of Broward youth

would benefit from learning and applying these principles.

In her estate, she set aside a generous gift of real estate to

create The Jack and Harriet Kaye Fund at the Community Foundation

of Broward. By choosing the Community Foundation

as her partner in philanthropy she knew her wishes would be carried out

forever. Through the Foundation’s stewardship - the Kayes will forever be

people who care.

Highlights 2007

Community Builders are philanthropic individuals and families who have endowed

a Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward with one million dollars or more.

Causes that Matter

34

The Bridging Education and Attitudes with Teens program educates more than 3,500 Broward teens and their parents each year on HIV/AIDS prevention.

22

Once an unmentionable disease, HIv/aIDs prevention

has become a global cause. For the past seventeen years, the Community

Foundation of Broward has brought national funders such as

The national aIDs Fund, the elton John aids Foundation and Bristol

Myers squibb together to provide critical dollars to address

the problem and its solutions here in Broward. The establishment of an

advisory committee, local partnerships with groups like the

united Way, combined with national resources has resulted in more than two million dollars invested in 163 programs

to reduce the incidence of HIv/aIDs in our community. Thousands of

Broward lives have been touched. until there is a cure, HIv/aIDs will be

a cause that matters.

35

The Community Foundation of Broward has strengthened nonprofits for ten

straight years. We started our nonprofit resource Center to provide training, education and resources to assist

them in their development.

3,500 nonprofit professionals and board members have benefited from 10,000 hours of education on topics that

range from Management and leadership, to strategic Planning and Collaborative Partnership Development.

Training sessions, lectures, technical assistance and individual consultations are all led by national experts in

the field.

We provide forums for board chairs

and CeOs to discuss issues that

are significant in their peer group.

We have developed a 50,000 page

online resource library that is filled

with information on national best

practices and standards. We produce

a newsletter three times a year that

keeps nonprofits current on trends,

laws and timely information that

helps them further their missions.

The Community Foundation’s

nonprofit resource Center creates

stronger nonprofits. This means

stronger partners for us, strengthening

the use of grant dollars - and ultimately

- better solutions for Broward.

Highlights 2007

The Community Foundation of Broward believes that grants to be made in the future are as

important as grants made today. To attain this goal, one of the long-term objectives is to grow our

aggregate portfolio value through above average investment returns while minimizing our risk.

The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Broward, Inc. is a fiduciary and is responsible for directing and monitoring the investment management of the Foundation’s assets. During the past ten years, our assets have increased from $20 million to almost $82 million. a significant factor in this growth is our above average investment returns.

Our success in achieving our investment objectives requires strict adherence to the following formula:

Our formula fulfills our Fundholder wishes: For Good. For Ever.

Increased total assets by 23% to almost $82 million

Double digit returns over the past five years

received almost $10 million in contributions

approved $5 million in 555 grants
